Quick Answer: To connect two JBL speakers, first pair the primary speaker with your audio source, such as a smartphone or tablet. Once paired, press the ‘Connect’ logo on the primary JBL speaker, and then press ‘Connect’ on the secondary speaker. This will synchronize JBL Connect or JBL Connect+ compatible speakers.

JBL has been around for decades, but most know the company for its durable, premium portable speakers.

Whether you want to annoy everyone at the beach with your questionable music taste or turn your phone into a full-fledged sound system, JBL offers something for everyone.

What many people don’t know is that JBL Bluetooth speakers can easily connect to each other.

The feature dubbed ‘Connect’ rolled out with the Pulse 2, Clip 2, and Flip 3, allowing users to link multiple JBL speakers together. The maximum limit was set to two devices at a time.

Naturally, the company saw potential in its lineup of portable speakers. So, it released the next generation of speakers with the ‘Connect+’ (JBL Connect Plus) communication protocol that extended the limit to 100 speakers.

So whether you’re looking to pair one or 100 JBL speakers, this post will offer step-by-step instructions on connecting your speakers together, regardless of the connection method.

JBL Connect vs. Connect Plus – What’s the difference?

JBL Connect allows two speakers to connect at the same time, while JBL Connect Plus allows up to 100 speakers to connect at the same time; however, both technologies are not compatible with one another

If you need more, further down, you’ll find a FAQs section that better explains the connectivity process and its limitations. Let’s get to it.

FAQs

What JBL Speakers Connect Together?

JBL speakers can connect with each other as long as they follow the same protocol. For example, Pulse 3 and Charge 4 can connect together, whereas Pulse 2 and Flip 4 can’t connect because they follow different communication protocols.

The list below will help you figure out what protocol your JBL speaker supports.

ProtocolSpeaker Models
JBL ConnectJBL Flip 3, Charge 3, Pulse 2, Clip 2
JBL Connect+JBL Flip 4, Xtreme 2, Pulse 3, Charge 4, Boombox
JBL PartyBoostJBL Flip 5, Flip 6, Pulse 4, Pulse 5, Boombox 2, Boombox 3, Xtreme 3

Keep in mind that JBL’s communication protocols are not backward compatible. Also, older models can’t upgrade to ‘Connect+’  or ‘Party Boost’ except for the JBL Charge 3.

What is the Maximum Limit of Connected JBL Speakers?

The limit varies from model to model and depends mainly on the communication protocol.

How can I set my connected JBL speakers in Stereo Mode?

JBL’s smartphone app allows you to set two or multiple connected JBL speakers to either ‘Stereo‘ or ‘Party‘ Mode.

How many JBL speakers can you connect?

As mentioned earlier, the connection limit is two for models that support the ‘connect’ protocol. Whereas those with the latest protocols can connect to 100 speakers simultaneously.

Can I upgrade from JBL Connect+ to JBL PartyBoost using a firmware update?

No, the old JBL speakers with Connect+ technology cannot upgrade to ‘PartyBoost.’ With only one exception of the JBL Charge 3, the company has strictly isolated its communication protocols.

How do I unlink one JBL speaker from the group?

You can delink one or multiple JBL speakers from the rest in a multi-pairing scenario without any inconvenience.

You can either press the power button to turn it off or the connect button to unpair it.

However, before disconnecting, make sure you’re not disconnecting the primary speaker (the one connected to the audio source).

What is the difference between JBL Connect+ and PartyBoost?

While ‘Connect+’ significantly improved over the original ‘Connect,’ PartyBoost has nothing to offer more than the connectivity range.

READ MORE: How to connect JBL speakers to computers and laptops?

The latest Speakers with PartyBoost have a wireless range of 60+ feet compared to 30+ in those with Connect+.

The maximum number of connected devices for both protocols is 100 speakers.

Linking JBL speakers together isn’t so hard

Pairing two or multiple JBL speakers is a breeze, but make sure that all of them have the same communication protocol.

You can connect up to 100 portable JBL speakers with JBL’s latest connection types (Connect+ or PartyBoost), whereas the old ones (‘Connect’) can be linked to only one extra speaker. Hopefully, this post will make the pairing process easy for you.

Choosing the best JBL speaker

Balancing Budget and Features

First, let’s chat about your budget – because, let’s face it, we can’t all splurge on the top-of-the-line model.

Second, you’ll want to think about features – because what’s a speaker if it doesn’t sing to your specific needs?

So, let’s get down to business and find that JBL speaker that’s going to best fit your needs.

Budget

Before you take the plunge and pick your JBL speaker, let’s talk dough. Like any shopping spree, JBL offers a wide range of speakers at different prices, so you’ll need to determine how much you’re willing to spend.

There are some great options available even if you’re on a tight budget, so don’t feel you have to break the bank to get a good-quality speaker.

If you want a speaker that sounds great and can go anywhere, you’ll need to choose a portable speaker with long battery life. Sound quality should be your primary concern if you’re looking for a speaker to use at home.

Quick Answer: Yes, Google’s first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, is set to launch at its yearly developer conference, Google I/O, on May 10, 2023 at a starting price of over $1,700.

One of the most frustrating things can be trying to get your JBL speaker to connect properly.

It can be frustrating to go through the steps to connect your speaker only to find that it won’t connect or that the connection is unstable.

This can be especially frustrating if you’re trying to listen to music or watch a movie, and the audio keeps cutting out.

It seems like it should be a straightforward process – turn on the speaker, wait for your Bluetooth device to make the connection, and start listening.

But we often find ourselves struggling with a stubbornly uncooperative JBL speaker.

Why does my JBL speaker keep turning off?

Your JBL Bluetooth speaker won’t connect due to several possible reasons.

For example, a weak or unstable Bluetooth signal, interference from other electronic devices, or problems with the speaker itself.

For example, things like low battery, outdated firmware, or multiple devices connected simultaneously.

Thankfully, there’s no need to panic. There are steps you can take to try and troubleshoot the problem and get your speaker working properly.

This post provides some tips on things you can do to prevent your JBL speaker from disconnecting. And if your JBL won’t connect, we have some workarounds.

JBL Speaker Keeps Disconnecting: Possible Fixes

Image: KnowTechie

What can you do when your JBL speaker doesn’t connect? Here are a few tips that might help.

  1. One thing to check is the proximity of your device (Mac, PC, iPhone, or Android) and the JBL speaker. Ensure they are close to each other—usually 30 feet or less.

  2. If the speaker connects on its first try, but you’re having trouble with the connection, try unlinking other devices. Doing so will help reduce the amount of interference the speaker is experiencing.

  3. Be sure your JBL speaker has a fully charged battery. If it is low, charge it before trying to pair it again.

  4. Make sure your JBL speaker’s Bluetooth is turned on and ‘Discovery Mode’ is enabled. Most JBL speakers will have a blinking blue light on the power button when they are in discovery mode. How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone

  5. You should also check the Bluetooth connectivity of the device you are trying to connect with. If it is weak or spotty, that might be the reason your JBL speaker keeps disconnecting.jbl speakers next to iphone showing how to connect

  6. If other electronic devices (especially a Wi-Fi router) are near your JBL speaker, it may be causing interference; try moving the speaker to a different location.

  7. If your JBL speaker has been functioning correctly in the past but has started to disconnect just recently, it’s possible that the speaker’s firmware needs an update.

You can update your speaker’s firmware via the JBL Portable app from the App Store and Google Play.jbl connect android app

  8. If these solutions aren’t working, consider resetting your JBL speaker to its factory default settings.

This will erase all cache of previous settings and connections, but it could be your best bet to get your speaker working properly again.

To reset most JBL speakers, press and hold the volume up (+) and the Play button simultaneously and let the device restart.jbl speaker keeps disconnecting how to fix on purple background

Why won’t my JBL speakers connect to each other?

You’re not alone if you’re having trouble getting your JBL speaker to connect or stay connected.

Many users have reported the very same issues, but the good news is that there are several potential solutions that you can try.

These include restarting your speaker and device, ensuring that your speaker is within range of your device, and having the latest firmware installed on both your speaker and your device.

If none of these solutions work, you may contact JBL customer support.

In the meantime, keep trying and don’t give up – with a little patience and persistence, you should be able to get your JBL speaker working properly in no time.

Quick Answer: To connect JBL speakers to an iPhone, you can use Bluetooth or a wired connection. With Bluetooth turned on the JBL speaker and iPhone, wait for your JBL speakers to appear on your iPhone’s list of available devices. Then tap on the JBL speaker’s name to connect to your iPhone.

Short on time? Jump ahead

Like most Apple users, you probably regularly use your iPhone to listen to music.

But what if you could take that listening experience to a new level by connecting your iPhone to a high-quality JBL speaker?

Not only would the sound be louder and more immersive, but it would also be richer and more nuanced.

Siri integration is another plus feature, but it is only available for the latest JBL speakers in Xtreme, Pulse, Charge, and Flip lineup.

You can ask Siri to play your favorite song, turn up the volume, or skip to the next track. Now that you know the benefits of connecting your iPhone to a JBL speaker, let’s get down to the basics of how to do it.

Pairing a JBL speaker with an iPhone

iphone bluetooth setting
Image: KnowTechie

Both JBL and Apple hate 3.5mm aux outputs. The lightning port transmits power and audio from iPhone 7 to the latest iPhone 14.

Likewise, most JBL speakers have Bluetooth as the only option for connectivity.

The company has an app (JBL Portable) for both IOS and Android devices that covers all its speakers except for some low-end sonic boxes in JBL Go and Clip Series.

Though useful for firmware updates and setting up different modes in a multi-speaker setup, the app isn’t necessary to pair JBL speakers with iPhones and, in general, any other device.

How to easily connect your JBL speaker to iPhone via Bluetooth: Step-by-step

Here, we’ll show you how to pair the JBL Flip 4 with the iPhone 14.

As Bluetooth is involved here, the steps remain the same, whether it’s for an old JBL Clip 2 or the latest Boombox 2.

How to pair JBL speakers to iPhone

  1. Make sure that both devices are close to each other.

  2. Press the ‘power button‘ once to turn on the JBL Flip 4. A solid white light will appear on the ‘power icon’ immediately, followed by an audio cue.How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone

  3. Press the ‘Bluetooth Button’ for 2-3 seconds to enter pairing mode, indicated by a blinking blue light.Picture of a JBL speaker on a purple background / How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone?

  4. On your iPhone, go to Settings, tap on ‘Bluetooth,’ and toggle on the switch.iphone settings for pairing bluetooth How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone?

  5. In the ‘Other Devices’ section, the speaker’s name will appear as ‘JBL Flip 4’. Tap on the name and wait for a few seconds.iphone bluetooth settings How to connect JBL speakers to iPhone?

  6. The two devices will now pair, and you can listen to music on your JBL speakers using your iPhone.

Connecting JBL speakers to iPhone via an AUX cable

You can connect your iPhone to the JBL speaker with a 3.5mm audio cable if you want a wired connection.

Just plug one end of the cable into the iPhone’s headphone jack adapter and the other end into the JBL speaker aux input.

FAQs

If none of these steps aren’t helping you pair your JBL speaker to your iPhone, there may be a problem. Here are some troubleshooting questions in the FAQ section below.

Why can’t I connect my JBL speaker to my iPhone?

If you recently connected your speaker to a device, it will automatically connect to that device when you turn it on. A stable blue light is an indicator of this.

You will have to unpair your JBL speaker first or override the previous pairing by pressing the Bluetooth button for almost 3-5 seconds.

The speaker will now enter pairing mode, and you can easily connect it to the iPhone.

If those steps don’t work, it may be because your JBL speaker is out of range or has a low battery. And if this isn’t the case, the only option you have left is to reset the speaker to its factory settings.

Is JBL compatible with the iPhone?

Yes, your JBL Bluetooth speaker is compatible with the iPhone. Apart from playing music, you can make calls and summon Siri with most JBL speakers.

How can I connect multiple JBL portable speakers to my iPhone?

You will start by connecting the primary JBL speaker with the iPhone.

Next, you will have to press the connect button on both the primary and secondary JBL speakers together. You can build a chain of almost 100 speakers this way.

One of the great things about the Nintendo Switch console is its 3.5mm headphone jack.

That’s great if you have a favored set of cans or want a wired connection to your super-portable console, but what about the rest of us?

The mobile industry is moving away from the headphone jack, so you will likely have a favored set of earbuds or headphones.

So, can you use those with your Nintendo Switch, or do you have to carry two sets of headphones at all times?

Can the Nintendo Switch use Bluetooth headphones?

Short answer: Yes.

Thanks to a September 2021 update, Nintendo added Bluetooth audio support, allowing players to use Bluetooth headphones with the Switch.

But it comes with some caveats. For example, there’s no microphone support, and you can only pair two wireless controllers if Bluetooth audio is enabled.

How to connect Bluetooth headphones to Nintendo Switch

  2. Scroll down and select Bluetooth Audionintendo switch bluetooth settings

Another option is the $69.99 Genki adapter kit.

Genki’s Bluetooth kit comes with a USB-C adapter that plugs straight into your Nintendo Switch, adding Bluetooth 5.0 audio support with aptX Low Latency, multi-pairing audio, and passthrough charging.

The kit also has a tiny boom mic for voice chat, a metal stand for your console that raises it high enough to use the adapter, and a USB-C to USB-A adapter to use the Genki with, well, anything with USB audio support.

But again, this is just another option. Now that the Nintendo Switch supports Bluetooth audio, you won’t need an adapter unless you want to use a microphone.

Short on time? Jump ahead

If you’ve ever been excited to do something on your computer and gone to type something, and nothing happens, you’re not alone. We’ve all been there asking the eternal question – Why isn’t my wireless keyboard working?

Wireless keyboard connection issues could be from any number of things, from incorrect drivers to interference from other devices.

Wired connections are usually easier to fix, often working if you change the cable or simply by unplugging and plugging the keyboard back in.

Issues with individual keys could mean a physical replacement is in order. However, mechanical keyboards with removable key switches are great because you can swap in a new switch if one goes faulty.

How do mechanical keyboard switches work?

If your keyboard has fixed switches, it’s not easy, and you’ll have to contact your keyboard manufacturer.

We’ll walk you through what troubleshooting steps you can take to fix your wireless keyboard. Most of these steps will work for wired keyboards as well.

How do I fix my wireless keyboard not typing?

The first step in troubleshooting most electronics is checking the power supplied. For wireless keyboards, you want to check the batteries.

Some keyboards use replaceable batteries, and some have inbuilt rechargeable ones. Low power levels could make your wireless keyboard skip letters, have noticeable input lag, or straight-up not work.

All you need is a USB cable for those with inbuilt batteries to get things running again. Plug one end into your keyboard and one into your computer, and leave it until it’s charged.

You’ll probably be able to use it while it charges, as the USB cable will pass data to your computer.

Quick Tip: After your keyboard is recharged, test your keys using this keyboard test and see if the skipping letters still persist.

aaa batteries

Replace your batteries

If your wireless keyboard uses replaceable batteries, it’s quick to change them out.

Turn your keyboard over, and find the battery door. Open it, take out the dead batteries, and put in fresh ones of the correct size.

Most keyboards we’ve used need AA batteries, but some use AAA, so double-check. It’s always best to use lithium-ion batteries for electronics, especially wireless keyboards with a higher power draw.

Check the connection

Ideally, all computers would come with built-in Bluetooth or wireless connectivity.

Laptops, Chromebooks, and tablets all have Bluetooth nowadays. So do many desktops, so you can connect to any Bluetooth-enabled keyboard wirelessly.

Some wireless keyboards use their own wireless connection with a supplied dongle. Logitech, for example, almost always uses one of its Bolt or Unifying dongles with its keyboards and other wireless accessories.

logitech dongle on a desktop
Image: KnowTechie

Check your USB port and Bluetooth wireless dongle

The receiver can also cause problems during operation. If the USB port it’s plugged into is malfunctioning, for instance, the data won’t transmit correctly.

Other devices can also cause interference, such as appliances, electronics, and even other Bluetooth units.

First, try resyncing your keyboard with the wireless dongle. This pairs the wireless keyboard with its dongle again and could solve intermittent problems.

bluetooth logo on a purple background

This process differs depending on the make and model of the receiver, but usually, there’s a connect button on the USB receiver that puts it into discovery mode.

That should also start a light flashing on the receiver.

Then press the corresponding Connect button on the keyboard, and you should be connected again. You’ll want to check out the manual for your wireless keyboard for devices without a Connect button.

If you’re still having issues, try the USB receiver in a different USB port on your computer. And if that doesn’t work, let’s move onto the next steps.

If your wireless keyboard uses Bluetooth instead of a dedicated dongle, it’s time to head into your device’s settings.

For Windows users

  1. Open the Start Menu, then click on Settings

  1. Find the Bluetooth entry and make sure the toggle is set to On

Then try your wireless keyboard again. It should start working instantly. If not, you’ll need to keep reading below for additional tips.

For Mac users

On a Mac, to make sure your Bluetooth is turned on, it’s time to head into System Preferences:

  1. Click on the Apple Menu icon
  1. Click on System Preferences from the menu that drops down
  1. Then click on the Bluetooth icon

  1. Check Bluetooth is on, and turn it on if it’s not on already.

That covers checking the Bluetooth connection on Mac, but if you use iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, keep reading below.

For iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch users

On iOS, it’s quick to check the Bluetooth status. Here’s how:

  1. Swipe down from the top right-hand corner to open Control Center

Image: KnowTechie
  1. On older iOS devices, swipe up from the center of the screen
  1. If Bluetooth is on, the Bluetooth icon will be blue
  1. If it’s not on, tap the Bluetooth icon to turn it on

For Android users

Android devices have a quick menu that is only a swipe away. From here, you can see if Bluetooth is on, turn it on if not, and even pair a device.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen
android quick settings at the top of the screen of a smartphone

  1. Tap the Bluetooth icon to turn Bluetooth on, if it’s not already on

You can also long-press the Bluetooth icon to start pairing your keyboard in case it forgot the pairing

Your wireless keyboard might need software

Windows users need to install software components called drivers that allow the device to interface and communicate properly.

Most plug-and-play devices, like a keyboard, automatically take care of driver installation, which is why you may not be familiar with the process.

Sometimes, however, the operating system will choose the wrong driver that ends up being incompatible with your device.

Using the wrong driver can cause many issues, including the wireless keyboard not working. If this has you feeling a bit out of your wheelhouse, don’t sweat it; we’ll show you how to get your drivers back up and running below.

But if you prefer to let someone else do the grunt work and have drivers updated automatically, we recommend looking into something like AVG Driver Update.

Owners of Razer gear only need one program, Razer Synapse. To get it, head on over to Razer’s website.

Some of their keyboards might also need a firmware update.

You can head to this page and click on keyboard in the list to see if your model is mentioned. You’re on the latest firmware if it’s not on the list.

For Apple Magic Keyboards

Drivers for Apple’s keyboards are packaged in macOS, so you don’t have to download anything.

If you’ve got issues with your Magic Keyboard, you can find many informative troubleshooting articles on their support pages, however:

  1. Head to Apple’s website
  1. Click on Support at the top-right
  1. Search for your keyboard (if your Magic Keyboard is for Mac or iPad) and read the support articles that come up

Still have an issue? It’s time to contact Apple.

Test your wireless keyboard with another computer

You’ve checked the power, you’ve checked the connection, and you’ve checked the software.

If your wireless keyboard is still typing oddly (or not at all), it’s time to try it on another device.

Doing this step narrows the problem down to your wireless keyboard. You might find it still doesn’t work, so it’s time to hit up support for a replacement.

You could also see it types perfectly on the other device, in which case it’s something specific to your machine.

Maybe your Bluetooth receiver is glitching, or the USB port you put the dongle in is failing.

Perhaps you need to fully uninstall the wireless keyboard’s software, reboot, and reinstall it.

If your wireless keyboard still isn’t working

You’ve made it this far, and your wireless keyboard still isn’t typing properly. There’s only one thing to do. That’s to talk to the nice support team of your keyboard brand.

They might walk you through the troubleshooting tips we’ve already outlined, but you can confidently say you’ve already tried those.

If your keyboard is still under warranty, support will set up an RMA and get you a new keyboard. Problem solved.

Some wireless keyboard manufacturers have up to a three-year warranty, so contact them even if you think you’ve owned it for a while.

Now you know what to do if your wireless keyboard stops typing.

You could also go back to a wired keyboard and remove any future issues from happening. Only a thought.

The Good
Great, loud sound with little to no distortion even at higher volumes
Various wired and wireless inputs and subwoofer output if you need more bass
Surprisingly lightweight and easy to carry despite its size
The Bad
10 hour battery life at half volume is pretty weak
No waterproofing or protection from the elements, so not great for outdoors
8.4
Overall

Looking for a wireless Bluetooth speaker with a little more oomph than your average portable speaker? If so, there’s a lot to like about the Monoprice Soundstage 3, but it isn’t perfect.

The Monoprice Soundstage 3 is a “portable” Bluetooth speaker that breaks the norms of traditional Bluetooth speakers.

It’s a 10+ pound speaker with a 5″ woofer in the middle of a couple of one-inch tweeters. In other words, it’s a beast. You can find the Monoprice Soundstage 3 on the company’s website or Walmart for $249.99

I’ve been using the Soundstage 3 portable speaker for a little over a week now, and my eardrums aren’t very happy with me (mainly due to cranking the volume). So, let’s see what the speaker is all about.

Portable might be a bit of a stretch

So, when you think of a portable speaker, you likely don’t picture something like the Monoprice Soundstage 3. It’s more than a foot long, about seven inches tall, and six inches deep. And it weighs a little over 10 pounds.

But for its size, it’s relatively lightweight. And there’s a nice PU leather handle on the top that makes carrying it around a little easier.

It is a Bluetooth speaker fitted with Bluetooth 4.2 technology. Bluetooth 4.2 is considered legacy tech by now, and you can only be connected up to 32 feet away. This is a bit limiting, especially considering how loud this speaker can get.

While it is Bluetooth, the Soundstage 3 does have wired connection options. The back of the speaker includes a set of RCA inputs and a 3.5mm jack if you want a wired connection.

There’s also an output for a dedicated subwoofer in case you want to add a little bass to your experience. It comes with an AC power cable that you can use to either charge the battery or just power the speaker constantly. Finally, there’s a USB-A port that you can use to charge your phone.

Simple design

monoprice soundstage 3 bluetooth speaker control panel
Image: Alex Gatewood / KnowTechie

The front of the speaker is a very simple design. There’s a 5.25″ aluminum concave woofer in the middle and a one-inch silk dome tweeter on either side of the woofer.

There are no grills, so you get a natural speaker look with the Soundstage 3. The design of the speaker is extremely simple and would fit well in just about any room, as long as it physically fits.

All of the speaker’s controls are on the top, making it pretty easy to adjust volume or input. The Pair button is also located in the same panel, making it easy to connect to devices wirelessly.

You also control the volume onboard with the two volume buttons. There’s also a battery level indicator to know when you need a fresh charge.

The battery itself lasts for up to 10 hours of listening at 50 percent volume. But the speaker gets pretty loud, and the battery life is much less when listening at higher volumes.

This part was a bit disappointing, as its impressive sound wanted to get loud, but it becomes too limited by the battery life.

One thing to note about the Soundstage 3 is that it is not designed to be an outdoor speaker. It would be perfectly fine to have it outside to listen to some tunes on a nice day, but there’s no waterproof or dustproof protection.

And Monoprice also warns users not to keep the Soundstage 3 in direct sunlight for too long. All of the speaker drivers are open, so there’s nothing stopping any debris from getting inside and messing up the speaker.

So how does this Bluetooth speaker sound?

monoprice soundstage 3 bluetooth speaker rear panel
Image: Alex Gatewood / KnowTechie

So now on to the question that matters the most when looking at a speaker: How does it sound? The Soundstage 3 is a pretty hefty speaker, but does its sound back up its size?

The answer is definitely yes. Even though it’s an indoor speaker, the Soundstage 3 is incredibly loud, even at only half volume.

You’ll have no problem entertaining your entire house party or even jamming outside, as long as you keep the speaker safe from the elements.

And, as you’d imagine, there’s a lot more bass in the Soundstage 3 than you’d find in traditional, smaller Bluetooth speakers.

The bass is certainly the highlight of this speaker, but it also doesn’t take any clarity away from the mids and highs. The Soundstage 3 sounds clear and great, with no distortion at all up to around 80-85 percent volume.

At the highest volumes, you do start to notice some distortion as the bass begins to overpower other sounds. And there’s no app control or equalizer to tweak any of the sound settings for extra balance either.

That being said, 80 percent volume is still really loud, and all kinds of music sound great at that volume.

Whether it’s bassy hip-hop like 50 Cent or rock and roll with more highs like Led Zeppelin or Linkin Park (I’ve been back into Hybrid Theory a lot lately, and you’re almost required to listen to that album at high volume), the Soundstage 3 sounds great.

Should you buy the Soundstage 3 Bluetooth speaker?

monoprice soundstage 3 right
Image: Alex Gatewood / KnowTechie

The Monoprice Soundstage 3 straddles the line of what you could consider a portable speaker. It more resembles the old-school boomboxes from the 80s and 90s than it does a portable speaker from today.

That being said, it’s much louder and more powerful than your average Bluetooth speaker. The 5.25″ woofer complimenting the two 1″ tweeters provides powerful, dynamic sound that sounds great with little to no distortion, even at higher volumes.

The Soundstage 3 is best compared to competitors like the Marshall Stanmore III Bluetooth, which is a bit more expensive at $380. And it requires a constant power connection to work.

There’s also the Soundboks Go if you’re looking for an outdoor speaker that’s extra loud. But this one will really dig deep into your wallet, costing $699 on Amazon.

But the easiest comparison would be to Monoprice’s other Soundstage 3 120-watt version. The 120-watt version of the Soundstage 3 is more powerful with 120 Watts of total power and even cheaper than the Soundstage 3 Bluetooth at just $119.99.

But the 120 requires constant power at all times to work. The big win with the Soundstage 3 Bluetooth is its completely wireless experience.

If you’re looking for a “portable” speaker that brings a little more power and volume to the table than your average wireless Bluetooth speaker, then the Soundstage 3 is a great option.

Again, it’s available on the company’s website today for $249.99 or from Walmart for the same price.

The quality of wireless headphones has really improved in recent years. Now they’re about to enter a new era of awesomeness, as the Bluetooth LE Audio standard has been finalized. But what is Bluetooth LE Audio?

First, the LE in LE Audio stands for “Low Energy.” It’s also important to note that Bluetooth LE Audio is not just one thing. Bluetooth LE Audio is a collection of features to improve wireless audio devices.

The biggest feature is probably the new LC3 codec, a more efficient way to transfer audio data. Don’t take our word for it, though, have a listen for yourself.

Bluetooth LE Audio provides higher quality at the same bitrate or slightly better quality at half the bitrate. That’s awesome and will make the listening experience even better while being more efficient.

What else does Bluetooth LE Audio add?

mockup of how auracast could look
Image: Bluetooth SIG

With Bluetooth LE Audio, users will also get better battery efficiency. That’s both on the transmitting device and wireless headphone, speaker, or earbud end.

With most Bluetooth audio devices being small, this is a way to get longer battery life without figuring out better batteries.

Something called Auracast is also coming. This lets you broadcast audio to multiple Bluetooth devices, so you and your friends could watch a movie on your smartphone, for example.

You could pick your Bluetooth source, just like a Wi-Fi network. That’s a neat trick and something we’ve long wanted.

This could also be a boon to hearing aid wearers, as LE Audio adds support for hearing aids and implants. Expect most new phones and TVs to feature this directly out of the box sooner rather than later.

What does LE audio mean for headphones and earbuds?

ue drops earbuds
Image: UE

True wireless earbuds will also get better support. Bluetooth LE Audio lets both buds connect to the source, so you don’t have any connectivity issues between the two buds.

Many early TWS buds had issues because of this, as they had to retransmit the signal to the other side.

The future of Bluetooth looks good, with both LE Audio and Qualcomm aptX Lossless on the way. Will we need new devices to take advantage of the new features? Could firmware updates bring Bluetooth LE Audio, or do we need new, more capable chips?

We’ll likely hear more about these questions in the coming months, as Android 13 supports Bluetooth LE Audio and is scheduled to release this fall.

The Good
A sleek design that looks good anywhere
Clean wireless connectivity
Connects with Alexa, Spotify, and Apple AirPlay
The Bad
No waterproofing which is a letdown for outdoor use
One channel sound can end up feeling a bit empty

Overall

We’ve come a long way from the days of floor speakers like the classic Pioneer CS-77. Wireless speakers are all the rage. Speakers such as the Edifier MS50A wireless smart speaker.

This speaker is essentially what we’re all using now. A wireless speaker that connects via Bluetooth or WiFi. Sometimes paired with a twin, often alone. What we’ve lost in RCA connections we’ve gained in our phones becoming stereo controllers.

The Edifier MS50A wireless smart speaker is a speaker that exists. You can play music on it through WiFi or Bluetooth. Edifier has a wide selection of audio products, which I discovered when I downloaded the wrong app.

One app is for other Edifier products, and all in Chinese. The correct app must be downloaded in the box via a QR code.

This QR code downloads an APK file, which my Android phone was not happy with. Random apk files often contain malware, but I flipped a coin and took a shot.

READ MORE: Review: Haylou PurFree Bone Conduction headphones

The app is only necessary to connect the speaker via WiFi, but I thought it was needed to get Bluetooth to work. This is due to Bluetooth not working right out of the box.

But after restarting the speaker a few times, I finally got it to show up on my phone. So I uninstalled the app before opening it because of general technological paranoia.

You’ll have to use the app if you want to connect Amazon Alexa, Spotify, or Apple AirPlay to the speaker. I was also wary about connecting my Amazon account to some random speaker app, so I didn’t do that.

Put it in your face

The marketing says that the Edifier speaker has drivers that are delicately tuned for bass booming and treble spiking.

That’s the case for most speakers in existence. No company intentionally sells speakers that aren’t tuned for at least three music ranges.

If you were to take this speaker apart, the actual speakers would differ slightly from the door speakers in your 1994 Chevy Cavalier.

Edifier specializes in speakers, so perhaps these are more finely tuned than car speakers, however.

If you are standing right in front of this speaker, your head level with the speaker, then it sounds fantastic.

Great leveled bass, clean mids, and the highs are faded enough not to be overwhelming. That’s within a foot, and you can smell the fabric.

If you stand up and walk around, this speaker sounds like half of a pair, and the other speaker is blown.

That’s kind of the sacrifice with wireless speakers sometimes. You have music in the room, and it’s not terrible, but it’s also not a superior sound system.

On Sturgill Simpson’s “Sing Along,” a song with a lot of distortion baked in, the speaker delivered a very acceptable translation across Bluetooth.

The bass on Glass Animals’ “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” was very leveled. This song has some thump, and it was certainly contained.

This is kind of a good thing for this kind of classy-looking speaker. It’s not meant to be the sub in a box in the back of your 1997 Celica.

Take it outside

bluetooth speaker on table
Image: Curtis Silver / KnowTechie

Where this speaker sounds best is with vocal-driven music or more indie rock stuff.

I know, that’s specific, but the Lumineers‘ new album and anything by Heartless Bastards sounded absolutely great while chilling on the back porch.

There was no fuzz during the quiet bits, and the small sounds of guitar and vocal inflections were very clear. While it’s not waterproof or weather resistant, if you have a covered spot on your porch, that’s where this speaker belongs.

While the sound does carry throughout the house or interior room, inside, it really needs a companion pair.

Outside, it serves its purpose well. The lack of walls doesn’t contain the sound so much that you notice the lack of two-speaker stereo sound.

Since I’m not connecting a Chinese speaker (or any other speaker through an app) to my Amazon account (and I don’t use Spotify), I didn’t test the WiFi connection.

WiFi might deliver a little better fidelity, but there is nothing substantial in the audible difference over the current Bluetooth standard.

For depth of sound, it’s not lacking, but it’s certainly not at the level of more expensive speakers that pride themselves on such a thing.

Using the orchestra-backed SOHN Live With the Metropole Orkest, I could still hear all the instruments, but the wideness of that kind of music was lost. Perhaps it’d be better with a second speaker.

Regardless, most general listeners won’t think this is a small thing. For its purpose, the Edifier delivered what would be expected from a Bluetooth/WiFi speaker.

Should you buy this Edifier speaker?

edifier outdoors bluetooth speaker
Image: Curtis Silver / KnowTechie

The Edifier MS50A wireless smart speaker has a few things in its favor that place it above standard market speakers. There is no built-in microphone. A great addition for privacy protection. The touch controls are easy to use also.

Then there is that sweet mid-century modern wooden look of the thing. As per its sound, it’s what you’d expect from a Bluetooth speaker. I wasn’t blown away, but I also wasn’t let down.

It works as intended, and its connectivity options and sleek look justify its $149 price tag. It’s available directly from Edifier, or you can snag it from Amazon and Best Buy.

Are there better speakers on the market? Sure. If you don’t care about music, there are also much cheaper ones. This option from TronSmart is only $60. JBL has a small portable Bluetooth Speaker for under $60, as well.

Regardless, if you want your music to sound like music and not noise, the Edifier MS50A wireless smart speaker is a good place to start.
