Well, I use a combination of checking out their campaign page, looking to see if any of the comments on their show dissatisfied backers, and companies I’ve already had successful pledge fulfillment.

I also stick to gadget areas I know a bit about, like photography, cooking, maker tools, and writing implements. That way, I can judge whether the campaign’s aspirations are within reach.

I’m also picking campaigns with some time left to run, as it’s no fun finding out about excellent gadgets after they’ve finished.

So, with all of that out of the way, here are some of the crowdfunding campaigns I’ve found worthy of attention in December:

SUMJet Pro – The First True Cordless Dry Cleaner

Steam cleaners are great tools to degunk our homes and smooth away wrinkles in our clothes. The big problem is that they’re mostly corded, so you can only use them when near a socket.

SUMjet Pro fixes that with a fully cordless design that can create 320f temperature steam.

Superheated Ultra-fine Mist (SUM) can steam suits, car seats, and clean surfaces you’d rather not touch, like those in your bathroom or kitchen wall.

Zeus: World’s smallest 270W GaN charger

So… with how many crowdfunding campaigns are out there, how do you choose what to back?

Well, I use a combination of checking out their campaign page, looking to see if any of the comments on their prior campaigns show dissatisfied backers, and also companies I’ve already had successful pledge fulfillment from.

I also tend to stick to gadget areas I know a bit about, like photography, cooking, maker tools, and writing implements. That way, I can judge whether or not the campaign’s aspirations are within reach, which adds to my decisions.

I’m also picking campaigns with some time left to run, as it’s no fun finding out about cool campaigns after they’ve finished.

So, with all of that out of the way, here are some of the crowdfunding campaigns I’ve found worthy of attention in August:

Magfast Lux and Extreme

Charging cables suck. Especially the one devices come with, which often fray or break quickly. Magfast gives you a lifetime warranty on cables, so you can keep throwing them in your bag with abandon.

They come in USB-C to USB-C, or USB-C to Lightning, and come with an adapter for use with USB-A ports.

Then there’s Extreme, the power bank with three Qi Charging ports, five USB ports (Two C, three A), and enough power to jumpstart your car (with the accessory cable). Whew.

The other thing to know? Shipping will start in December now for Lux cables, as the campaign is already so successful they had to adjust their factory order. The Extreme power banks are scheduled to ship in March of next year.

OEPLAY 

Want your speakers to look as good as they sound? OEPLAY might be just what you’re looking for. The combination of AMT tweeters and powerful subwoofers brings clear, crisp audio with smooth bass.

That combination of speakers produces a 33Hz to 55kHz response range – more than most speakers or headphones can manage. Then they add Bluetooth 5.0 to the mix for wireless connectivity from any device. Oh, and it looks great, and can be paired for true stereo sound.

minbay Pixel Artboard

If you’ve ever wanted a dedicated device to do pixel art on, this is your time. Minbay’s Pixel Artboard is a pocketable, portable device dedicated to pixel artists. Never be far from your tools, so wherever inspiration hits you can push those pixels around.

AYANEO Air

It’s easy to forget that in the wake of the Steam Deck release, other companies have been cranking out portable Windows handsets for years.

AYANEO’s latest crowdfunding campaign, the Air, uses a 1808p OLED screen for crisp, colorful visuals. It’s powered by either the AMD Ryzen 5 5560U or the Pro model uses the Ryzen 7 5825U.

Get ready to say “cya” to joystick drift, as the Air uses the hall effect for both the triggers and joysticks. That’s when they measure the angle with magnetic fields, instead of physical parts that wear out over time. Oh, and it weighs less than the Switch OLED!

F1, World’s First Digital Soldering w/ Fume Extractor

Most people don’t have a dedicated fume cabinet at home. That’s a problem when working with solder, as the fumes contain noxious chemicals, or even lead.

The F1 aims to fix that by combining a fume extractor hood with a digitally-controlled soldering iron. The 75W soldering iron can reliably heat to a range of 50C – 480C. Pull the 360-degree tube to where you’re soldering, and hit the fan. Fumes are instantly reduced, and your health is protected.

ALuminate – The Ultimate Illuminated House Sign

Tired of delivery drivers not finding your address, especially at night? Wish they could read your house number from halfway down the block?

You want an ALuminate house sign, with its tasteful illumination and brushed metal or matte black finish. Give your delivery drivers a break, and give your house the classy sign it deserves.

JOYO: An Out-of-this-World Smart Board Game Experience

Physical board games are great, but what about adding some AI magic? The JOYO system consists of a flying UFO playing piece that serves as a console, arbiter of rules, and more.

The crowdfunding campaign reads hidden code on your board and pieces to determine how the rules work for your game. Play variants of Battleship, or test your memory, play fantasy adventures, chase ghosts, and more.

GPD usually makes pocketable powerhouses of ultraportable Windows laptops. Now it’s supersized its latest UMPC, the Win Max 2.

It’s got a 10.1-inch IPS screen to play on, a keyboard you can type on comfortably, and a built-in gaming controller.

It’s powered by either the 12th gen Intel i7-1260P with Xe Graphics, or the Ryzen 7 6800U with Radeon 680M, 16GB of RAM, 1 or 2TB of NVME storage, and Windows 11. Oh, and there’s an optional LTE module, for connectivity wherever, whenever.

Afreda S6: A Fold-in-1s Reverse 3-wheel E-bike

Most e-bikes want to trim wheels, but this crowdfunding campaign for a reverse trike puts a second one at the front for smooth, stable cornering.

It’s got a 37-mile range with a 22mph max speed, tons of shock absorption, and stronger braking as it brakes on two wheels. Oh, and it unfolds in one step, in one second. That’s insane.

Wejoy touch screen 4k projector

Turn any surface into a touchscreen computer, with this portable 4K projector. Running on Android 9.0, the Wejoy has auto focus and keystone correction, and 600 lumens of brightness.

Pair it with the rechargeable interactive pen for presentations, or play any Android game you want on the wall. The optical engine is sealed for dust proofing and heat issues are a thing of the past.

We’ve looked at multiple portable monitors from Mobile Pixels, all aimed at adding screens to your laptop. Geminos is different, and not just because it’s aimed at desktop use.

The flat-pack device unfolds to have two 24-inch screens, stacked and hinged. You can have them fully flat or have the bottom screen at an angle to suit your preferences.

Mobile Pixels says this stacked orientation makes it more ergonomic and takes up less space. It’s also great for reading long documents without having to scroll.

You don’t just get an innovative screen setup, either. Geminos has a full HD webcam, powerful speakers, and a USB docking station in the base, which also has USB-C pass-through charging for your laptop.

That docking station also has Ethernet, SD, and microSD card readers, two HDMI ports, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Both screens are a 60Hz refresh rate and 250 nits of brightness. The whole unit weighs 20lbs and folds flat for storage or transport. It’s not as portable as the company’s other monitors, but it’s nice that the screens are protected if you do have to move it.

If Geminos looks like your kind of thing, the Kickstarter campaign is live. A few super early bird units are still available at $499, after which you’ll pay $699. That’s still a hefty discount off the eventual MSRP of $999. Mobile Pixels hopes to start shipping to backers in October.

HPRT MT810 Wireless Portable Printer

Take all of the fuss out of portable printing with the MT810. It uses thermal transfer to print clear, smudge-free prints. Even better, it prints from an internal paper roll, so you don’t have to worry about carefully carrying paper around with you.

While it probably won’t replace a full-on printer for those that need it for more complex jobs, the MT810 fits a small niche pretty well.

If you frequently need printed documents but spend a lot of the time on the go, the MT810 could come in handy. You never have to worry about adding ink, and it’s completely wireless, so you don’t need any extra cables. 

Space 0 DIY electronic kits inspired by NASA

Space is cool, and the first images from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) show that it’s even cooler than previously imagined.

Build yourself some scale models of some of the coolest spacecraft, with these awesome kits. Choose from the JWST, the Solar Orbiter, the ISS, Apollo Lunar Module (with space rover), or the CubeSat NEA Scout. All made from PCB material that you solder together, learning about electronics along the way. Neat.

NuraTrue Pro with lossless audio

You don’t normally associate high fidelity with Bluetooth audio, but that may change. We loved Nura’s personalized sound when we reviewed their over-ears, and now you can get that tech in true wireless earbud form.

The NuraTrue Pro also features active noise cancellation, and Dirac Virtuo spatial audio, for even more lifelike playback. They’re one of the first devices to use Qualcomm’s latest Bluetooth 5.3 chip, which lets them use aptX Lossless audio with compatible sources. That all adds up to a better sound for you.

Nasa X Interstellar Red 3.721 watch

Space travel will always be cool, and we’re barely getting started. Watches have been around for hundreds of years and will always be cool. Why not combine the two and get a watch with actual pieces of space rock in it?

These NASA-approved timepieces have small pieces of a meteorite that came from Mars, the red planet. You can choose two automatic movements, a Sellita with a golden second hand, or a Miyota with a red second hand. The Sellita also comes in a titanium case, with a titanium bracelet as an option.

Cyberpunk mini alley

Want a dope decor piece to liven up your boring bookcase? This cyberpunk alley is *ahem* right up your alley. Put a tiny slice of a dystopian city on your shelf, so you can have neon whenever you want.

Just look at the awesome detail. A tiny arcade machine, a seedy-looking motel that probably charges by the hour, some glowing green stuff. Awesome.

Meazor 3D

We loved the previous Meazor device, and this one turns it up to 11. Instantly create 3D floor plans for your use, with this ingenious laser scanner.

You can scan walls, curved objects, check for levelness, and even measure curves with the rolling measure. It’ll replace all your other measuring devices, and it’s pocketable. With six hours of operational battery life, that’s a lot of floorplan creation.

CASE X

One of the biggest drawbacks to MacBooks is the lack of ports. Sure, Thunderbolt 4 is great, but you still need to lug a dock around to use most of your peripherals. Case X means your dock is always with you, with a nifty design that clips onto the back of your MacBook’s screen.

You get HDMI out, 2 USB-A, SD and microSD readers, USB-C 100W charging, cable storage, and up to 4TB of SSD storage if you opt for the Pro model.

Tend Deep tendon pain massager

Quill: World’s 1st Patented Color Picking Stylus with Alexa

There are tons of scanning tools to bring real-world colors into the digital realm, but this one is different. It’s the first stylus with that functionality, which makes it quicker to keep creating. An on-device LED shows the color you’ve picked, which is pretty cool.

It also means you don’t have to carry more devices around, as you can use the same stylus that you’re sketching with to grab the color you want. Quill also comes with Qube, which is part wireless charger, part clock, part Alexa smart speaker.

Dygma Defy

Want a keyboard that you can configure to your own ergonomics? The Dygma Defy splits the normal keyboard arrangement into two, so you can position them where your arms are most comfortable.

The halves even have standard mounting holes on the bottom, so you can mount them onto your chair’s arms or wherever you want. Oh, and it’s got RGB, and programmable keys, and useful thumb clusters, with hot-swappable switches. Phew.

amofit S wearable for sleep

We could all do with a little better sleep, so it’s great to see all the new sleep tech that’s coming out. The AMOfit S stimulates your vagus nerve, which brings a whole ton of benefits that aren’t just better sleep.

It also improves stress, anxiety, memory, creativity, and restores your internal balance. AMOfit says studies have been done that also show this type of stimulation can delay “significant effects related to aging.” Whew, sign me up.

SnapGrip Magnetic Snap-on Camera Grip+Battery for your phone

Smartphone cameras are great these days. Do you know what’s not? The way you must twist your fingers to tap the shutter on screen. This crowdfunding gadget from Snapgrip magnetically attaches to your smartphone, giving you all the tactile grip of a DSLR.

That way, you can concentrate on the images you’re going to create, and not on if you are going to drop your phone. It also doubles as a power bank to wirelessly charge your phone. We love that.
