An alleged video of the so-called Sony PlayStation 5 Slim has surfaced online. However, the device showcased in the video looks exactly like the existing PlayStation 5 in terms of color and design.

The rumor about the PlayStation 5 Pro model in development has been running for a few months at least. However, very little is known about the PlayStation 5 Slim variant.

Sony started the trend of having a PlayStation Slim variant since the PlayStation 2. And it has been three years since the original PlayStation 5, so we’ve all been wondering whether Sony would be release a Slim variant of the PS5.

The video of the PlayStation 5 Slim was leaked on X, formerly Twitter

A video was leaked on X, formerly Twitter, that appears to be the new “Slim” variant of the PS5 through BwE_Dev.

The video showcases the device from various angles. However, we are uncertain at the moment whether this is a new PS5 variant. The device looks pretty much the same as the existing PlayStation 5 in the video. Unfortunately, we are unable to confirm its validity, so take this video with a grain of salt.

Coincidentally, another leak has appeared regarding the so-called PlayStation 5 Slim from a Chinese forum called A9VG

Like the previous leak, the Chinese forum didn’t leak a video, but they did leak a partial image of the device, which looks like a differently designed PlayStation 5. It could be the alleged “Slim” variant.

Alleged PlayStation 5 Slim Leaked Image
Source: A9VG

The leaked image also matches the device showcased in the leaked video. The leak also says that the new model is 5 cm (roughly 2 inches) taller than the existing PlayStation 5 model but has the same thickness.

Additionally, the leak says the new PlayStation 5 Slim has a new black slit in the middle, a detachable disc drive, and two USB-C ports at the front of the device.

Once again, even with two consequent leaks showcasing the same device, we are still not sure about its legitimacy. So, don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Sony Project Q vs. Valve Steam Deck? Since Sony’s Project Q announcement, the handheld gaming scene has been buzzing with excitement. Some good, some bad.

A comparison between the upcoming Sony Project Q and Valve’s Steam Deck is essential to understand better what each device brings to the table.

This article breaks down their specs, designs, performance, and pricing while incorporating charts, statistics, and quotes for a more comprehensive perspective.

Project Q, designed as an accessory to the PS5, uses Remote Play to connect it to the console, unlike the standalone Steam Deck. Both devices sport different designs and specifications, as detailed below:

Side by Side: Specs & Design Face-off

At first glance, comparing specs might seem like a simple task. But hold onto your hats – things are about to get complicated since these contenders differ more than you’d think:

Steam Deck

 • Display: 7-inch delight, 1280×800 crisp resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, 400 nit brightness
 • Processor: AMD APU (Zen 2 processor, 8 RDNA 2 CUs graphics card)
 • Memory: 16GB LPDDR5 5500 MT/s
 • Storage: 64GB eMMC / 256GB NVMe SSD / 512GB high-speed NVMe SSD

Sony Handheld Project Q

 • Display: 8-inch, 1920×1080 / 16:9 aspect ratio, rumored 60Hz refresh rate
 • Connectivity: Wi-Fi (6E rumored), requires Remote Play with PS5

In terms of performance, the Steam Deck lags behind the power of PS5 when used by Project Q; however, this does not make the steam deck obsolete as various factors have to be taken into consideration.

Remote Play reliability may affect Project Q enjoyment, while the Steam Deck maintains steady performance due to its on-device hardware.

Battle of the Games: What’s on Offer?

Streamliner or console devotees, their unique offerings will have you drooling. Variety is the spice of life, and our tech titans pack some serious heat when it comes to game libraries:

Project Q

Come at me, Sony die-hards! Your favorite PS5-exclusive titles await. Remote Play lets you stream all day Station 5 library in hand mode. Yes, please

When comparing prices, the Steam Deck has three tiers depending on storage capacity:

Although no specific pricing details have been released for Project Q, estimates place it in the $200-$300 range as it relies on PS5 hardware and doesn’t include its storage.

Each device has its brag-worthy points:

 • Steam Deck: Massive game selection, playing nice with PCs, and giving the spotlight to indie stars
 • Project Q: Handheld heaven for PlayStation loyalists, along with sweet, exclusive PS5 content

But make no mistake; if there’s one thing to keep in your back pocket, it’s that Sony seems like they’re going to invest a ton into Project Q.

Jim Ryan, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment during the PlayStation Showcase:

“It also highlights the tremendous popularity and power of the PS5 as the global development community rallies to push its advanced capabilities to the limit,” Ryan said, following the event. “We’re investing heavily in the future with innovative best-in-class hardware like PlayStation VR2 and the newly revealed Project Q, and our expansion into PC, Mobile and Live Service gaming is transforming how and where our content can be enjoyed.”

The bottom line

valve steam deck games

In simple terms, deciding between Sony’s Project Q and Valve’s Steam Deck depends on what you personally prefer, need, and what gaming equipment you have.

For example, if you’re someone who owns a PlayStation 5 and find and built a community of friends who all play together online, then the Steam Deck isn’t for you.

On the other hand, PC gamers don’t need to hear why ditching our Steam library for a PlayStation 5 is a good idea. Truthfully, PC gamers don’t listen to anyone (bless their hearts), so I’m not even going to bother.

But just in case, it’s important to compare the good and bad of each before diving in head first. Either or though, you’re not getting a bad console.

If you do prefer to go the Steam Deck route, do yourself a favor and check out our best Steam Deck accessories post. This otta keep you busy for a while.

The post Sony’s Project Q vs. Nintendo Switch – how do they compare? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
In the world of handheld gaming, Sony unveiled their new Project Q, which shares some similarities with the Nintendo Switch. However, there are key differences that set them apart.

This article will provide a comparison between Sony’s Project Q and the Nintendo Switch, covering things like design, specs, performance, and pricing.

Sony’s Project Q is not a standalone console like its predecessors, the PS Vita and PSP. Instead, it serves as an accessory for the PS5, utilizing Remote Play to connect to the console.

The device resembles a PS5 controller with a screen in the middle, featuring DualSense wireless controller capabilities such as adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, and a built-in microphone.

On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch is a standalone console with an onboard CPU, GPU, and other core specs. Unlike Project Q, the Switch can be played independently or connected to an external display via HDMI.

SpecificationProject QNintendo Switch

Resolution1920×10801280×720 (handheld)
Refresh rate60Hz (rumored)60 Hz
ConnectivityWi-Fi for PS5 Remote PlayHDMI (optional)

When considering performance, Project Q relies on streaming from the PS5, which offers more powerful hardware than the Nintendo Switch.

While the Switch targets 60 FPS gameplay on its 720p screen, the PS5 is capable of 4K, though Project Q’s display is limited to 1080p.

It’s important to note that Remote Play performance depends on Wi-Fi connection quality, which could affect input lag and overall experience. Many users remain skeptical about Sony’s claims of stable Remote Play.

As for pricing, the Nintendo Switch has various models with different price points, while Project Q’s price is yet to be announced.

Rumors suggest it could cost around $300, but it may be a tough sell unless you already own a PS5 and require a device specifically for Remote Play.

Nintendo Switch vs. Project Q: Still too early to call

Wrapping up, choosing between Sony’s Project Q and the Nintendo Switch depends on individual needs and preferences.

The Switch offers more value as a standalone console, whereas Project Q serves as an accessory for PS5 owners.

With concerns over Remote Play stability and the need for a PS5, it seems that the Nintendo Switch still holds its ground as the go-to choice for handheld gaming enthusiasts.

Sony recently held their annual event, called the PlayStation Showcase, where they revealed what’s coming soon. It’s similar to the good old-fashioned Nintendo Direct that Nintendo has done for years.

But, with no E3 anymore, it’s a bit more of a wild west situation for announcing content each year.

During the broadcast, they showed off tons of upcoming games across their flagship system and PlayStation VR2. Before they finished off with Spider-Man 2, they dropped some tidbits of hardware news.

They announced “Project Q” and “PlayStation Earbuds” at the same time.

Project Q is the Wii U that Nintendo fans wanted in 2012

Project Q is sort of Sony’s spiritual successor to their Remote Play feature. Even though the service still is around, this version is a stand-alone device away from your phones or computers.

It’s around the size of a DualSense controller and packs an 8-inch 1080p HD screen in the middle.

For comparison, it reminds us of the controller phone cases you can buy from Razer. But Twitter (and the internet) has taken to calling it a knock-off Wii U gamepad.

We’d argue, but Foamstars, which was announced in the same Showcase, is absolutely just Splatoon, with bubbles and human waifus. For context, Splatoon was a Wii U game originally. Maybe Project Q is just a Sony Wii U after all.

You can play all of your PS5 games directly on it. However, from the look of it, you’re going to require an internet connection to utilize the handheld. But since it’s standalone, it doesn’t seem to offer cellular service.

So, it’s tethered to your house (just like a Wii U). Cool, so much for it being a Nintendo Switch competitor. We reported on the Project Q leak about a few weeks back, and it seems the reports were pretty accurate.

Additionally, the Showcase also showed off the PlayStation Earbuds. They’re nice earbuds that work on a PlayStation 5 or your phone. That’s about all we know so far.

Can the PlayStation 5 play Blu-ray movies? https://knowtechie.com/can-the-playstation-5-play-blu-ray-movies/ https://knowtechie.com/can-the-playstation-5-play-blu-ray-movies/#comments Fri, 05 May 2023 02:46:25 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=160749 The Standard Edition of the console has a disc drive, but can you use it for Blu-ray movies?

The post Can the PlayStation 5 play Blu-ray movies? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: The PlayStation 5 is fully capable of playing Blu-ray discs. And, unlike the Xbox Series X|S, you don’t even have to download any extra software.

The PlayStation 5 is a powerhouse gaming machine. The ninth-generation console from Sony lets you play games in 4K resolution at up to 60 frames per second.

And with almost complete backward compatibility for PS4 games, the console has an additional massive library of games that you can choose from.

But the PS5 isn’t only an impressive gaming machine. It also doubles as a full-on media center.

You can download streaming apps like Netflix or Disney Plus to turn your PS5 into a multifunctional piece of hardware that can clear some of the clutter from your living room.

But what about other, somewhat older forms of media?

The PlayStation 5 Standard Edition comes with a disc drive so you can play physical copies of games, but would you be able to use the drive to play your Blu-ray movie collection?

So, can the PlayStation 5 play Blu-rays?

Short Answer: Yes

Yes, the PlayStation 5 is fully capable of playing Blu-ray discs. And, unlike the Xbox Series X|S, you don’t even have to download any extra software. Just pop the Blu-ray disc, and you’re good to go.

As a little bonus, the PS5 is also capable of playing 4K Blu-ray movies, which is a step up from the PS4. While the PS4 could play Blu-ray, neither version of that console ever had support for 4K Blu-rays.

So that’s a little extra bonus for PlayStation 5 owners.

How good is the PS5 Blu-Ray Player?

The PS5 Blu-ray player is seriously impressive. It features 4K UHD Blu-ray capabilities that’ll take your movie nights to a whole new level.

With stunning picture quality, HDR support, and immersive audio formats, this powerful machine has got you covered for all your physical media needs.

Plus, it’s compatible with standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs.

Navigating the PS5’s Blu-ray player is a breeze, making it a fantastic choice for movie buffs who want the ultimate gaming and entertainment experience.

Just keep in mind that some dedicated 4K Blu-ray players might offer extra perks, like Dolby Vision support, which the PS5 doesn’t have. But overall, it’s still an amazing addition to your entertainment setup.

Yes, you can watch Blu-Ray on the PS5

Of course, almost everything is going digital these days, but there are still plenty of people out there that have their own physical movie collection, and the PS5 is a great device for using those discs.

Just be sure that you get the PS5 Standard Edition if you’re looking to play Blu-rays or DVDs, as the console’s Digital Edition doesn’t come with a disc drive.

The post Can the PlayStation 5 play DVDs? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: Yes, the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition has a Blu-ray drive capable of playing DVDs. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition does not have a Blu-ray drive and cannot play discs of any kind.

Sony isn’t messing around when it comes to the PlayStation 5. The ninth-generation console is a beast, with 4K gaming and access to a huge library of games.

The console is also a full-on media device, letting you watch movies and television through streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus.

But with everything seemingly moving towards a more digital age, what about older forms of media?

Most people stream and receive their content digitally these days, but some of us still have physical collections. So, can the PS5 play those old DVDs piled up in the closet?

Does the PS5 play DVDs?

Short answer: Yes, the PS5 can play DVDs if you have the right version of the console

Not only does the PlayStation 5 feature an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive capable of playing Blu-rays, but Sony also didn’t forget about the older DVD format. The console also doubles (triples?) as a DVD player.

playstation 5 on its side
Image: Sony

But all PlayStation 5 consoles are not created equal. This is important if you are still in the market for a new console.

The Standard Edition PlayStation 5 includes the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive. You’re going to need that to play DVDs.

READ MORE: Can the PlayStation 5 lay on its side?

The PS5 Digital Edition doesn’t come with a disc drive, so get a Standard Edition if you want to play any physical media.

How to play DVDs on the PS5

Playing DVDs on your PS5 can be done in a snap. Simply connect the console to the internet to download the latest updates.

After that, insert the DVD into the disc drive of your Standard Edition PS5. A new menu option (shown above) will pop up. Select that to start your DVD on your official PS5 DVD player.

Final notes

Playing DVDs on PlayStation 5 is definitely possible.

Just remember that you’ll need the Standard Edition with the disc drive to play them. The Digital Edition does not contain the functionality.

Additionally, you will not be able to play DVDs from other regions, only movies that match your console’s region. But that shouldn’t be an issue for most users.

So, when someone asks about the discs PS5 can play, you’ll confidently know the answer.

Can the PlayStation 4 play MKV files? https://knowtechie.com/can-the-playstation-4-play-mkv-files/ https://knowtechie.com/can-the-playstation-4-play-mkv-files/#respond Tue, 02 May 2023 19:05:05 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=105250 The PlayStation 4 can be used as a media player - but does it work with MKV files?

The post Can the PlayStation 4 play MKV files? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: Yes, PS4 can play MKV files, but they need to be in MPEG-4 or H.264 video codecs. If the files are not in that audio codec, you’ll need to convert them to a supported format before playing it on the PS4.

The PlayStation 4 is a great console for playing games, but you can do more than that with the console. For example, you can use it as your personal media player for both music and movies.

If you have a lot of movies saved on a jump drive or other media device, you may be wondering what types of files the PS4 can play – we’ve got you covered.

Can the PlayStation 4 play MKV files?

Short answer: Yes

When the PS4 first launched, the number of files it could playback was limited, but thanks to an update to the media player app on PlayStation 4, users can now play videos from a variety of file formats.

Included in the update was the ability for users to playback MKV files.

Other move file types that work with PS4 include MKV, AVI, MP4, and MPEG-2 TS. For photos, JPG, BMP, and PNG all work. Music lovers can utilize both MP3 and AAC file types.

So there you have it. The PlayStation 4 can play a variety of file formats for media content, including the infamous MKV file type.

One lesser-known fact about MKV files is that they’re not just for video. They can also store multiple audio tracks and subtitles in different languages, all within the same file. This makes it super convenient for enjoying movies or shows with various language options

The post How to update your PS5 controller appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: To update your PS5 DualSense controller, you essentially have to wait for the update prompt from Sony. There is a trick that could help force the update, however. We’ll break that down below.

The PS5 DualSense controller has been very well received, and some people are even calling it the best controller ever made. But to get all of the great features, you’ll need to make sure your controller is up-to-date.

Over the course of the life of the DualSense controller, it has received several software updates. It is not at all uncommon for companies to regularly push updates to console peripherals, like controllers and headsets.

What is a little uncommon, however, is how Sony delivers its controller updates.

More specifically, how there’s no real way to force an update if you don’t follow the correct console prompts. So to clear up any confusion regarding upgrading your DualSense controller, here’s what’s to know.

Short on time? Jump ahead

How to update your PS5 controller

Keeping your PS5 DualSense controller up to date is pretty important. Some functions will simply not be possible without updating your controller.

Updating your controller is relatively simple, with one fairly inconvenient hiccup.

Here’s how you do it:

Power on your PS5

A prompt will appear when an update is availableps5 update controller screen

Plug your controller into the console with a USB cable

Press X on the Update now option

That’s it, that’s all you have to do. Pretty simple, right? While the DualSense updates are relatively simple to do, there is one small issue.

If you get out of the prompt menu any way other than plugging in your controller and pressing X on “Update now,” then you’ll be forced to wait another 24 hours for the update.

Unless you trick your console, which we’ll go over below.

How to trick your PS5 into pushing the update

According to The Verge’s Tom Warren, there is a way to get around the 24-hour wait period for updating your DualSense controller.

If you miss the prompts on your console or want to try to push an update before the PlayStation 5 is ready to give it to you, try this:

 1. Disconnect your console from the internet
 1. Head to Settings

 1. Select System
ps5 system menu

 1. Select Date and Time settings
change the playstation 5 date and time
Image: KnowTechie
 1. Move the time forward 24 hours

Once you’ve done this, your console should then force the update on you again.

While this isn’t ideal, it may be a decent way to help some people circumvent the 24-hour wait that PlayStation forces on you for missing out on its prompts.

This seems like an oversight on PlayStation’s end, but at least DualSense controller updates aren’t generally crucial to the performance of your console.

How to update your PS5 DualSense controller using a PC

If you primarily use your DualSense controller on PC and want to update it without a PS5 console, then you’re in luck. Sony released a program specifically to allow users to do just that.

 1. Head to this PlayStation update link and download the tool

 1. Run the program to install the file and follow the on-screen instructions to download the tool
 2. Once the installation is finished, launch the DualSense firmware updater
 3. Plug your DualSense controller in via USB and follow on-screen instructions to download the update

And there you go. Now, you can make sure your DualSense controller stays up to date even if you only use it for gaming on your PC.

Keep your PS5 controller updated to ensure a smooth experience

Whether you use your DualSense controller for gaming on PS5 or PC, Sony has finally made it possible to keep your controller updated through your chosen platform.

Now, you won’t have to worry about playing games with an outdated controller ever again.

The free claimable games every month are just the beginning of benefits for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers.

If you subscribe to the top two tiers of PlayStation Plus, you also get access to a massive library of rotating games that you can play for free.

And Premium subscribers get access to the Classics catalog, a growing list of classic PlayStation 3 and earlier games to play for free.

Several games are coming to the Game Catalog on February 21

PlayStation is constantly rotating games in and out of the Game Catalog for PS Plus Premium and Extra subscribers. It’s similar to Xbox’s Game Pass subscription.

This month, PlayStation is offering some pretty enticing titles, kicking things off with Horizon Forbidden West. This follow-up to the breakout 2017 title continues the story of Aloy in the post-apocalyptic world of Horizon.

The unique co-op-focused sci-fi shooter, Outriders, also joins the list of free games on February 21.

And you can revisit some favorites like Borderlands 3 and Tekken 7.
