Quick Answer: To screen record on iPhone, swipe from the right-hand corner down to open Control Center. Then, tap the Record button, and a three-second countdown will begin, giving you time to navigate to the screen you want to record.

Ever feel like your iPhone is just full of surprises? Cue iOS’s built-in screen recording feature – it’s a game-changer.

Screen recording on an iPhone lets you quickly record whatever is on your screen, but to use it; you’ll need to know how to screen record on iPhone.

Screen recording is great. Maybe you want to save clips of the game you’re playing or need to show a family member how to do something on their own phone. Regardless of the reason, the feature is extremely beneficial.

Once recorded, you can send the clips to your friends, upload them to Twitter, or add them to your Instagram story.

If you want to start using this feature, you’ll first need to set it up. Don’t worry; we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about recording your screen on iPhone.

Here’s how to turn on screen recording on iPhone.

How to add the screen record widget on your iPhone Control Center

Unlike Android phones, you won’t need to download an app or root your device to record your screen. Thankfully, it’s baked into iOS, but you’ll have to set it up first.

What we’re essentially doing here is telling our iPhone that we want the screen record widget accessible from our Control Center. This way, it’s easy to reach when we need it. Here’s how to do it.

screen recording on iphone

iOS doesn’t include the screen record widget in the Control Center by default, so we’ll need to add it ourselves. By following these step-by-step instructions, we’re essentially customizing our iPhone to have the screen record widget readily available in our Control Center. This ensures that it’s convenient and within easy reach whenever we need it.

  1. Settings

    ios settings app

    Open Settings

  2. Control Center

    Navigate to Control Center

  3. Add the screen record widget

Scroll down and tap the green button with a + that’s next to Screen Recording

That places the shortcut for Screen Recording into the Control Center. While you’re there, ensure the toggle next to ‘Access Within Apps‘ is set to ‘on’

How to screen record on iPhone

You’re now all set to start recording your screen.

  1. Open the app or website you want to record. You could also record your homescreen or anywhere else you deem fit. Remember, you can pretty much record anything on your iPhone.
  1. Open the Control Center. On iPhones earlier than the iPhone 8, that means swiping up from the bottom, and on the iPhone X or later it’s pulling down from the top-right corner

Image: KnowTechie
  1. Tap the Record Screen (the circle) icon to start recording. It won’t start immediately; you get a three-second pause before it records so you can switch back to the app you want to record
screenshot of ios control center
Image: KnowTechie
  1. To stop recording, swipe to get to the Control Center again and tap the Screen Record button one more time

For folks who learn better by watching, we made a step-by-step video outlining the instructions above

It’s also worth tapping the Crescent Moon or Focus icon (shown above) to set your iPhone into Do Not Disturb mode so you won’t get notifications in your recording.

While recording, you’ll see a red bar at the top of the screen. Newer iPhones with a notch will have the red bar at the top-left. That’s a visual indicator to remind you that you’re recording.

You can tap the bar at any time to get a pop-up message that asks if you want to stop recording.

How to record your voice while screen recording on iPhone

The above method lets you record both the video and audio generated by your phone, but you might want to record yourself talking at the same time.

To do that, turn on your microphone; the process is almost the same.

  1. When you’re in the Control Center, but before you start recording, press and hold the Screen Record button

  1. Then tap the microphone button on the pop-up screen to turn your microphone on

  1. Lastly, tap Start Recording to start the three-second timer letting you know recording will start soon

The microphone setting saves, so the next time you do a Screen Record it will be on. Turn it off before recording if you don’t want it.

Where to find your iPhone screen recordings

Once your recording ends, your newly generated screen recording will be found with the rest of your photos and videos in the Photos app.

Your recorded videos give you all the options you normally get with iOS videos. You can send them to friends or other apps. You can also use the built-in edit feature to trim the length.

Apple’s screen record feature is great for preserving content

Whether you want to record your screen for yourself or to share something with your friends, the iPhone’s screen recording feature is a great addition to your phone.

We’re not sure why Apple doesn’t include the screen record button by default in the Control Center, but thankfully, you can turn it on in just a couple of steps.

What do you think? Do you see yourself using the screen recording feature? Carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

We've got you covered.

The post How to change iPhone notification sounds and ringtones appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: To change iPhone notification sounds and ringtones, head to the Sounds & Haptics menu from Settings. We walk you through the process below.

Apple changed the face of mobile phones in 2007 with the release of the OG iPhone. Sixteen years later, however, it’s still not quite straightforward to change iPhone notification sounds and ringtones.

Back in 2007, everyone was using custom ringtones, but is that still even possible?

Sure, you can change to one that Apple has available by default, or even change to an alert sound if you prefer. You can also set different alerts for texts, voicemail, mail, and a few other things.

If you are tired of the standard Apple alerts and ringtones, we’ll show you where you need to go to change the ringtone and alerts on your iPhone.

Short on time? Jump ahead

How to change iPhone notification sounds and ringtones

Most of the alert tones on iOS are handled by one menu, Sounds & Haptics. Here’s how to find it, and what to do once you get there.

Open Settingsios settings app

Scroll to Sounds & Haptics and tap on itscreenshot of ios settings app

Tap on any list item with an alert tone next to itscreenshot of ios sounds and haptics menu

Scroll through the list of ringtones (longer clips) and alert tones to find one you likescreenshot of ios ringtones menu

Scroll to the Classic sub-menu if you miss the old Apple soundsscreenshot of ios ringtones classic option

Now you know how to change the alert tones for almost everything on your iPhone, except one. To change the clock alarm sound, you need to head into the Clock app.

Change the clock alarm sounds on iPhone and iPad

The only sound on your iPhone you can’t edit from the menu we just showed you is that of the alarm. For that, you’ll have to open up the Clock app.

  1. Open the Clock app

  1. Tap on the alarm you want to edit or create a new alarm

You can also choose to Pick a song to play in Apple Music. That assumes you’ve got an Apple Music subscription, of course.

Now you know how to change all of the built-in ringtones, but what if you want a custom snippet of your favorite track?

Custom iPhone ringtones are a thing still (but you’ll have to pay)

Apple hasn’t forgotten about how popular custom ringtones were back in the day. You can still add them to your iPhone, so you can have your tune of choice play when someone calls you.

We had Mario Piu’s Communication as ours back in the pre-smartphone days, but it’s not in the Tone Store, so we had to pick another classic.

To find your perfect custom ringtone:

  1. Go to either Settings > Sounds & Haptics or the sound options in the Clock app, as before
  1. Tap on Tone Store at the top of the list

  1. Choose Tones and look for one you want to buy

  1. Tap on the thumbnail to hear a preview, and tap the price to pay with your Apple account

  1. Tap Done
screenshot of confirmation of purchase on tone store
Image: KnowTechie
  1. Go back to the Sounds & Haptics menu, and tap on Download All Purchased Tones to get your new custom ringtone to appear at the top of the ringtones list.

And yes, we said buy. Song clips are $1.29, audio clips are $0.99. The Featured section has most of the popular songs being used on TikTok right now, or you can delve into the classics, organized in decades.

You can also make your own custom ringtones and transfer them to your iPhone via iTunes, or from Finder if you’re on macOS Catalina or newer, but it’s a lot of effort.

Is that effort worth $1.29? We’ll let you put your own price on your time.

Use custom sounds on iPhone to keep your notifications separate

Using custom sounds for ringtones and alerts is a great way to ensure you keep up with the notifications you care about.

This way, if you are busy with work, you can ignore text alert sounds while paying attention to Slack alerts. Setting up different ringtones will also help separate your iPhone from every other person’s iPhone in a crowded room.

Regardless of your reasoning, you should now be equipped with the tools and knowledge to change your notification sounds and ringtones.

According to the latest report from popular Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s next iPad will most likely be a foldable one that the company launches sometime next year.

In a series of tweets early this morning, Kuo shares his thoughts on the upcoming iPad. He says the company likely won’t launch an iPad within the next 9 to 12 months, and the new one will be foldable.

Kuo expects that the foldable iPad will come with a carbon fiber kickstand. Apple is going with carbon fiber thanks to its lightweight, durable build. You’ll want a kickstand that you can trust but won’t add bulk to the device.

Additionally, Kuo shared that Anjie Technology, a Chinese bonding and polishing company, will be in charge of producing the new carbon fiber kickstand.

This isn’t the first we’ve heard of a foldable iPad. We first heard rumors of the new foldable device from CCS Insight in October of last year.

Kuo thinks 2023 will be a slow year for iPads since Apple may not launch a new one this year. However, with the launch of the foldable iPad expected in 2024, the new model will likely boost sales greatly in 2024.

Of course, this is all still rumor at this point. Apple has yet to reveal that it is working on a foldable of any kind. Still, it looks like we will see a foldable iPad on the market before Apple launches a foldable iPhone.

The post Apple reportedly working on an iPad-based smart home display appeared first on KnowTechie.

New rumors in the Apple camp suggest that the company is working on an iPad-based display meant to mount or store in your home as a smart home display.

The rumor comes from Bloomberg’s Marc Gurman, a trusted insider with Apple information. Details on the potential device are scarce, but Gurman says it could come out as early as the first half of next year.

Apple’s smart display will reportedly use magnetic mounts for mounting on walls or other areas of the home. There will likely be some sort of docking station or speaker/charger that the device will mount to, as well.

The purpose of Apple’s home iPad is allegedly to act as a smart home display. You’ll be able to use it for FaceTime calls and to help control other smart devices in your home.

Gurman also notes that Apple is working on an updated Apple TV device with faster processing. That device is also supposedly coming sometime in the first half of 2024.

Additionally, the company is considering larger smart home displays for its product line, sources tell Gurman. The products will likely be Matter enabled, like the newly revealed HomePod.

Of course, these are still rumors at this point, and there is still plenty of time for what we’ve heard to change. But keep an eye out for a new iPad-like smart display for your home from Apple next year.

What does the “i” in iPhone (or iPad) mean? https://knowtechie.com/what-does-the-i-ipad-mean-309/ https://knowtechie.com/what-does-the-i-ipad-mean-309/#respond Wed, 04 Jan 2023 18:54:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=12080 Have you always wondered what the "I" in iPad or the iPhone meant? We may have the answer.

The post What does the “i” in iPhone (or iPad) mean? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: The “i” in iPhone could refer to the internet capabilities of the original iMac, or it could simply be a branding decision. At present, there is no definitive answer.

We all know what an iPhone or iPad is, but very few of us actually know what the “i” stands for.

We just know that the infamous “i” has existed for as long as we can remember, and the letter itself has become a pivotal part of the phone’s name.

Without the “i,” the iPhone would just be called “Phone,” and the iPad would just be called “Pad.”

I had to look around quite a bit to answer this, digging through tons of information. But, unfortunately, nothing really seems all that conclusive.

Still, after looking through tons of different Wiki answers, Apple questions on their forum, and more, I came up with a list of possible things that the “i” could mean.

Theories on what the “i” in iPhone/iPad/iMac branding could mean

steve jobs
Image: Work of the World

READ MORE: How to change iPhone alert sounds and ringtones

The first thing I’d like to mention is that I don’t believe that Apple planned to use the “i” for everything.

It just caught on and worked so well with the products, that I believe they kept it due to the success of the original iMac.

Let’s now look at a few options that the “I” in iPhone or iPad could stand for.

  • Information: This is probably the most logical explanation. With the information age, perhaps Apple wanted to throw an “i” in front of their products to display the information age.
  • Internet: This is another fairly logical explanation. With the internet hitting its stride around the release of the original iMac, Apple could have decided to ride that wave.
  • Independent: This explanation is mostly guesswork, but there’s also a good amount of logic we can put behind this decision.
  • Interactive: This is the last potential answer we can think of. The iPhone is very interactive and had a ton of features upon its original release.

Have any thoughts on this list of potential answers? Well, the answer is on that list, sort of. Can you guess which one it is? If you still can’t figure it out, no worries. We have the answer below.

Here’s what the “i” in iPhone or iPad stands for

So the answer is a bit complicated. First, we must remember that before the iPhone was ever released, Apple launched the iMac computer in 1998. Notice anything?

Yup, the first instance we can find of Apple using “i” as a brand identifier dates back to before the iPhone. Check out the video of Steve Jobs describing the iMac in the video below:

“We are targeting this for the number-one use that consumers tell us they want a computer for, which is to get on the internet,” Jobs says.

He goes on to add that “i” also stands for four other words: individual, instruct, inform, and inspire.

The takeaway is that “i” stands for internet, emphasizing Mac’s revolutionary internet capabilities. If you didn’t watch the video above, here’s a quick excerpt:

“’i’ also means some other things to us,” Jobs said on stage. “We are a personal computer company, and although this product is born to network, it also is a beautiful stand-alone product. We are targeting it also for education. They want to buy these. And it is perfect for most of the things they do in instruction.”

There’s more to Apple’s story than meets the eye

But here’s where things get interesting. Paul Bischoff, a privacy advocate at Comparitech, tells Readers Digest that Jobs “didn’t have an official meaning” for the letter “i.”

Instead, it was meant to be more of a brand identifier. “He also alluded to it referencing ‘I’ as a personal pronoun, and ‘instruction’ for education purposes,” says Bischoff.

steve jobs iphone

While “internet” seems like a logical conclusion for the “i” in iPhone, it still doesn’t add up.

Think about it: if the “i” stood for internet on the iMac, then why did Apple add an “i” in the first iPod back in 2001?

The original iPod didn’t have internet capabilities. That means that the “i” in “internet” blows that theory out of the water.

The answer is simple. The “I” identifies the brand rather than merely representing one shortened word.

You can decide which answer you feel is correct. However, we can also speculate that there is absolutely no meaning to the “i,” and it was just something Apple decided to do.

Whatever the case — and the meaning — we will never truly know (or so it seems).

What do you think the ‘i” in iPhone means? Do you have an idea or reason to believe it’s a certain different word? Let us know in the comments below.

If your suggestion is good enough, we’ll move it into the article itself.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 4, 11:20 AM: The Elec reports that Samsung’s mobile devices department thinks that Apple’s first foldable devices will either be an iPad or a MacBook and will possibly come in 2024. You can read the original report below.

A new analyst report says that Apple is likely to release a foldable iPad before a foldable iPhone. CCS Insight thinks the larger foldable will come as soon as 2024.

That insight came as part of a more extensive report of future trends and products in 2023 and beyond. It covers digital communities, security, semiconductors, and all aspects of consumer technology.

Speaking to CNBC, CCS Insight’s chief of research, Ben Wood, said that “a folding iPhone would be super high risk for Apple.”

That’s why he thinks a foldable iPad will come out first, to avoid cannibalizing the iPhone range, Apple’s highest revenue maker.

He believes that any folding iPhone would have to be significantly more expensive than the standard iPhone ranges, around $2,500.

Apple would also have to nail it on the first try. Critics would come for them hard if any of the usual technical issues with foldables occurred.

folding ipad patent
Image: Patently Apple

Apple has been working on foldables since at least 2018, when a patent popped up for a foldable smartphone. We also reported on a 20-inch foldable from Apple, which could be either an iPad or a MacBook.

PatentlyApple also found Apple patents last year that were amended to discuss “a foldable display that will act as a laptop.” Previously, the patents had the nondescript “foldable device” as their focus.

The report from earlier this year mentioned a 2025 entry date into the market. That would mean a foldable MacBook, assuming that the predicted 2024 date for a foldable iPad holds true.

We could see a foldable iPad being popular. One of the reasons that users keep them at home is their size, so being able to make them half the size for travel is a big deal.

Apple is working on a 16-inch iPad, aimed for an end-of-2023 release.

That’s according to Wayne Ma at The Information, who says it would “further blur the line between the iPad and MacBook.”

This backs up earlier reporting from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, who spoke about larger iPads under development at Apple.

A 16-inch iPad would be quite the tool for professional artists and other creatives. It would replace larger drawing tablets, sketchbooks, or even drafting tables.

This isn’t an iPad that will be marketed to the broader consumer market but to specialists and professionals.

Apple recently released its 10th-generation iPad (Image: KnowTechie)

It’s also not the only new, bigger iPad we’ve heard about recently. Analyst Ross Young says that a 14.1-inch iPad Pro is also in the works, with a MiniLED screen and ProMotion.

Young also predicts that the other two iPad Pro sizes will be OLED in the future. He says that based on his supply chain analysis, Apple will make the shift in 2024.

A larger iPad screen would pair nicely with Stage Manager, Apple’s new multitasking feature. This lets the user group apps together and shows up to four of them on the screen at once.

It would also be great for Freeform, Apple’s new whiteboarding app that works across all of its devices. Think of it as a collaborative tool when you can’t all be in the same office.

For Apple to turn the iPad into more of a laptop replacement, a 16-inch screen option will help.

The company will also have to fix how file management works, which is still the thing that frustrates me the most with my 11-inch iPad Pro.

Apple releases updates for the iPad throughout the year, with a major update every fall. This means you should be familiar with how to update your iPad when the time comes.

The smaller updates bring feature updates that missed the major release, vulnerability patches, and other bug fixes.

The major updates, on the other hand, can completely change the experience of your iPad.

You can manually update iPadOS on your iPad or let the iPad do it automatically. The best way to keep your iPad secure from attack is to keep it updated, so we’ll show you how.

How to update your iPad to the latest version of iPadOS

If you want to update your iPad (and you totally should), here’s how you can do that in just a couple of quick steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPadipad homescreen showing the settings icon

  2. Tap on Generalgeneral settings menu on ipad

  3. Then, tap on Software Updatesoftware update screen on digital screen

The Weather app is finally on iPad, and iPad Pro users get some new pro-level features to match the hardware inside.

Stage Manager is finally here for multitasking workflows, and the Home app has a new design.

Now your iPad is updated to iPadOS 16. You can now use all of the new features that Apple has been working on.

Those features include a new handwriting straightener to fix messy Apple Pencil scribbles and editable Messages.

You’ll also be safe from multiple security issues, as Apple patched a long list in this update.

What you won’t be able to use yet is the external monitor part of Stage Manager. Apple says that’s coming later this year.

Apple recently revealed the 10th-generation iPad, and now the Apple tablet is starting to reach reviewers. Is it any good?

Announced last week and hitting stores on October 26, the latest iPad comes in a handful of fun colors, introduces new features, and brings USB-C into the mix.

But does the updated 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display and improved camera justify the $449 price tag? Or should you hold out for the iPad Pro? Let’s dive in.

Are the upgrades notable on the 10th-gen iPad?

For serious iPad owners, performance will be one of the deciding factors when determining what model you will get.

Thankfully, Apple has provided an improved experience over the last-gen iPad. In fact, some benchmarks place the new A14 chip at 30% faster than the previous A13 option.

“On Geekbench 5, which measures overall performance, the iPad 2022 scored 1,580 on single-core and 4,400 on multi-core, which is a marked improvement over the 1,384 and 3,387 turned in by the 9th gen iPad. However, the iPad Air with its M1 chip scored a much higher 1,707/7,151,” says Mark Spoonauer of Tom’s Guide.

While we’ll dive into other concerns further down, it’s good to see that Apple has improved the performance of this model substantially.

Stats are a great performance indicator, but real-world tests will always provide value insights into a product’s functionality.

Thankfully, the latest iPad model from Apple is quite capable of juggling your emails, browsing, apps, and more.

[The new iPad] handled multiple Google Chrome tabs, Slack, Spotify, Messages, Telegram, and Twitter simultaneously without feeling sluggish,” writes Brenda Stolyar for Wired.

What’s going on with Pencil support on the 2022 iPad?

The 10th-generation iPad has undergone some design changes, but what does that mean for the Apple Pencil and Pencil 2?

The 2022 iPad and iPad Air look a lot alike, and the Air allows the Pencil 2 to attach magnetically.

So, it’s understandable to assume it would work the same with the 10th-gen iPad. But, surprisingly, that’s not the case.

In fact, the new iPad only works with the original Pencil. But things get even more awkward when it’s time to charge your accessory.

“The new iPad offers a USB-C charging port, which makes the original Pencil’s integrated Lightning jack useless without an optional dongle. With help from a charging cable, you can use the Pencil while it’s connected to the iPad, but it’s an inelegant solution,” writes Stan Horaczek of Popular Science.

This might not be your tablet if you are an artist or just someone who likes robust Apple Pencil support.

The once-affordable iPad is not even that affordable anymore

When deciding on the right iPad, pricing obviously plays a huge role in your decision. The 10th-gen iPad, however, is in a strange place.

It does offer more features and better internals, but at what point is it worth getting the base iPad and not the new iPad Air?

It starts at $599 and is almost on the same level as an iPad Pro.

The 10th-generation iPad starts at $449, $120 more expensive than the 9th-generation model. It makes the latest Apple tablet sit in a weird spot, and reviewers agree.

“[I]t’s certainly better than the ninth-gen model (which is still great), but it costs considerably more and is not as good as an iPad Air. And since you can find a current iPad Air on sale fairly easily at this point, this new iPad is not the iPad to buy right now despite the fact that it has a lot going for it,” says Dan Seifert of The Verge.

Other outlets noted similar thoughts about the latest iPad. It’s a solid device, but what role is it filling for users?

Rounding up the latest iPad

At the end of the day, Apple’s 10th-generation iPad is just that — an iPad. It features improved internals, great color options, a better camera setup, and will be a functional tablet for buyers.

If it’s your first iPad ever, you’ll probably love it. But seasoned Apple veterans will likely feel it is a misstep from the company.

Expensive accessories, weird Apple Pencil support, and wonky pricing keep this from being a must-have.
