Microsoft officially launched its new Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock.

Priced at $299.99, this new dock connects over USB-C, supporting data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps and 96W charging thanks to Thunderbolt 4.

The front of the dock features a USB-C and USB-A port, while the back boasts two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, a 2.5-gigabit ethernet port, an audio jack, and a security lock slot.

This new Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock is not just for Surface devices but also supports other devices that can connect via USB-C. It’s a major step forward for Microsoft, which had been slow to adopt USB-C and Thunderbolt 4 on its Surface devices.

While the proprietary Surface Connect port isn’t going away anytime soon, it’s clear that Microsoft is moving in that direction, as seen in recent Surface devices like the Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Pro 9, which feature both USB-C and Surface Connect ports.

It’s exciting to imagine what Microsoft has in store for future Surface devices, as it seems likely that we’ll soon see a Surface device that drops the Surface Connect port in favor of just USB-C.

Microsoft’s commitment to Thunderbolt support is a welcome addition to the tech giant’s lineup, and the Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock is sure to impress Surface users and other tech enthusiasts alike.

The post Google Nearby Share now lets you send files directly to your PC appeared first on KnowTechie.

Google is currently beta testing the Nearby Share feature for their Android devices on Windows PCs. This will allow you to easily share files from your phone directly to your PC, seamlessly.

Nearby Share, for those that don’t know, works like Apple’s AirDrop feature. With phones on the same network, files can be shot from one phone to another without the need for emails or file links via Bluetooth.

Nearby Share was added to Android phones back in 2020.

What you should know before using Nearby Share

To use Nearby Share, your phone should be able to send files to your Windows 10 or Windows 11 machine. However, you have to have some specific requirements to make it work.

Your PC must be running 64-bit Windows and at least Windows 10.

Using Nearby Share on phone and computer.

Your Android device doesn’t have to be a phone. It could be a tablet or anything in-between. But, it does require a minimum of Android 6.0.

Setting up Nearby Share on PC

Make sure both devices have Bluetooth. Your phone or tablet should have this automatically, but it may not be included on your PC. They make external dongles to remedy that, though.

Prior to using Nearby Share, it’s necessary to download the app directly from the Android website. You can access the app here.

Now, Turn on your Bluetooth for both devices. Then, make sure they’re both connected to the same Wi-Fi. Nearby Share comes built-in to Android, but you’ll need to install it for your PC here.

Additionally, both devices must be within 16 feet of each other (or 5 meters for those not in the USA).

You can set your Device Visibility preferences to control who is allowed to share with you by signing in to your Google account

Nearby Share has entered the arena, but it isn’t the only contender

File transfers with Nearby Share tend to be pretty fast, which is great. Though, it’s just another option to connect your phone to your PC.

Windows already offers an app called Windows Phone Link that works similarly and doesn’t require Bluetooth to be turned on the PC.

That one requires an app to be downloaded to your phone and PC. While it only allows photo sharing between the devices in lieu of any file, it lets your PC get your text messages and notifications as well. It also offers iOS support.

At the least, you have options to any of your phone-to-PC needs with Nearby Share or Windows Phone Link.

Just make sure it’s your PC so you don’t accidentally send your entire porn collection to your roommate’s computer instead.

Is the Xbox One backward compatible with the Xbox 360? https://knowtechie.com/is-the-xbox-one-backward-compatible-with-the-xbox-360/ https://knowtechie.com/is-the-xbox-one-backward-compatible-with-the-xbox-360/#respond Sun, 02 Apr 2023 01:42:17 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=111664 Yes.. but also no.

The post Is the Xbox One backward compatible with the Xbox 360? appeared first on KnowTechie.

Quick Answer: Yes, the Xbox One is backward compatible with the Xbox 360. However, it is important to note that not all Xbox 360 games are compatible with the Xbox One.

So you finally upgraded to an Xbox One from your Xbox 360. That’s cool, but what about all the games and achievements and more importantly, save files that you collected on your older console?

One of the biggest issues with consoles and updating to newer versions is that, depending on your situation, those old consoles and games are traded in or forgotten in a closet because your new console doesn’t work with those classic games.

Is the Xbox One backwards compatible with the 360 and original Xbox?

Short answer: Yes, but you’ll still need to do a bit of research to figure out which games work

So, Microsoft did something super cool with the Xbox One, backwards compatibility. That means you could (in theory) stick an Xbox or Xbox 360 game disc into the drive on the Xbox One, and have it run as if it was on the original console.

Except… what happened is that Microsoft ported a growing selection of older games to be able to run on the Xbox One.

That means you could still play them, but only if they were on the list. Currently, there are 575 from the Xbox 360 era, and 41 from the original Xbox.

What’s even cooler is that Microsoft also made it possible to transfer game save files from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One. All you have to do is save those files to the cloud from your Xbox 360. Simple.

What do you think? Do you use your Xbox One to play older Xbox games? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

The post How to Gameshare on Xbox One appeared first on KnowTechie.

All Xbox consoles come with some pretty cool features, from backward compatibility to the ability to stream games from the cloud. However, one killer feature that’s not well-known is the ability to gameshare on Xbox.

Yes, you can legally share your digital game library with someone else. That way, they can still play your games even when not in your house.

But what is gameshare, and how easy can you add it to your console? We’ll break that all down below.

Things you should know about Gamesharing on Xbox

xbox one console
Image: Unsplash

Before you get started on the Gameshare setup for Xbox One, you’ll need to have a couple things readily available.

Any two from the following Xbox consoles: Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One S All Digital, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S, as well as internet access (for both consoles). You also need the Xbox account login details for you and your friend.

This part is extremely important, and you will not want to gameshare with just anyone. Sharing login details should only be done between people you trust, as there is always the chance someone could abuse your login.

How many people can you Gameshare with on Xbox?

If you want to know how many people you can gameshare with at once, we’ve got you covered. Gamesharing on Xbox is limited to two people at once.

That’s you and the other person involved. You must stop game sharing with the original person and set up two consoles again to game share with another person.

Game share doesn’t work with physical game discs. You can lend these to a friend, but you can’t play simultaneously.

How to Gameshare on Xbox One

To begin, ensure that you have two Xbox Live accounts and a pair of Xbox One consoles, both connected to the internet. Ideally, you and a close friend or family member should each have one of these setups.

The game-sharing steps are fast but not obvious, so follow them closely. Once complete, you can access each other’s digital games and even play the same game together.
Turn on your friend’s Xbox One console, press the Xbox symbol on their controller to bring up the Guide

Scroll to the leftmost panel in the guide and press on the + Add newxbox gameshare how to

Sign in on their console with your Xbox Live details

Go to Settings > Personalizationscreenshot of xbox settings dashboard with personalization link highlighted

Select My home Xboxscreenshot of xbox personalization menu with an arrow pointing towards home xbox menu option

Select Make this my home Xbox on the next two screens

Now you’ve got one Xbox console set up to game share. Now, it’s time to set up the second console.

Now set up the other console

Take your friend’s Xbox Live login details, and boot up your Xbox console. Then you follow the same steps as above, using your friend’s login.

When you are finished, you will have the following set up:

 • Your Xbox console: Designated as your friend’s Home Console
 • Their Xbox console: Set as your Home Console

Now you can both play each other’s libraries. If you want to change your home Xbox to game share with another friend, you can.

Just know that Microsoft limits the number of times you can change the home Xbox to five per year.

What content can you gameshare?

xbox one games banner
Image: Xbox

You can share almost everything on your Xbox account. Those include:

 • Your Xbox Live Gold subscription
 • Games and downloadable content from the Microsoft Store
 • Games from an Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription

Microsoft says you can’t share game-specific content or in-game currency. You also can’t share some “pre-order or special edition content that can only be redeemed once.”

That’s a very small set of restrictions, considering how many games and DLC you do get access to.

The other thing you share — and it is the reason we recommend only doing those with trusted people — is the ability to make purchases on the Xbox account being shared.

So, again, be careful who you gameshare with, it could have financial risk.

What if Xbox gameshare isn’t working?

xbox tv app samsung
Image: Microsoft

Have you noticed that game sharing isn’t working on your Xbox? Can’t load any of your games? Check your internet connection.

That’s because, for gameshare to work, you need to be connected to the internet. If offline, your Xbox will only be able to play disc-based games or those downloaded by the owner’s account.

No internet means no games, no Xbox Live Gold, and no Game Pass.

You should also check if your account is logged in on the Xbox you are trying to play on. Because someone else’s console is designated as your home Xbox, you have to be signed in.

Xbox Game Sharing is a great way to connect to new games

Gamesharing your Xbox library is great. You can save money, try games you wouldn’t have bought, and play multiplayer with your buddy.

It’s also the best way to access your games quickly if you have multiple Xbox consoles. That means the whole family can get in on the fun, and you can create gaming memories that last a lifetime.

What do you think? Plan on using Xbox’s Gameshare feature? Let us know down below in the comments or carry the discussion over to our Twitter or Facebook.

Everyone loves free and cheap trials, especially when they give you a lot of content.

The Xbox Game Pass (and its different tiers like the Game Pass Ultimate) has been a staple for nearly six years and has been the most cost-saving way to play many games.

The $1 Game Pass Ultimate Trial has been the crowning way to get into well over 300 games across both PC and Xbox for newcomers and returning players.

Once the trial ends after one month, the service goes to $14.99 per month. That changes now, as the $1 Game Pass Ultimate Trial has been sunset entirely.

Game Pass Trial? More Like Game Passed On!

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate 3-Month Subscription

According to The Verge, Kari Perez, head of global communications at Xbox, gave a brief statement. She said:

“We have stopped our previous introductory offer for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass and are evaluating different marketing promotions for new members in the future.”

PC Gamer dug into the stats for how well the Game Pass really does. They found that it was severely lacking in their subscriber growth rates. Growth for Fiscal Year 2022 (ending in June 2022) was at 28.07%.

For most companies, that’s a fantastic number! But, Microsoft was looking at a 72.88% growth rate projection, making this fall very flat. The year prior had similar numbers.

The last time the Game Pass Trial did its job was basically the beginning of the pandemic. You know, when people were bored at home during quarantine.

Sadly, this means that everyone’s favorite cheap way to play the newest Xbox games when they come out has outlived its usefulness as a business model.

Upon a quick cursory search, it appears that the $1 Game Pass Ultimate Free Trial has already gotten the Thanos Snap treatment. We’re sad to see it go, but we await what it gets replaced with.

You can still join Game Pass Ultimate right now at full price or grab 3 months for only $23.

The post Microsoft’s new Copilot will handle your mind-numbing Office tasks appeared first on KnowTechie.

Microsoft just announced some big-time changes to their suite of Office apps, and guess what? It involves AI, shocking right?

The announcement was made by none other than Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, and Jared Spataro at an event called “The Future of Work with AI.”

During the event, the duo explained how AI will change how we work in the years to come and how Microsoft plans to help guide those changes.

Microsoft plans to add AI smarts to its Office apps. This includes PowerPoint, where you can use an AI-powered Copilot to create entire presentations with just a few text prompts.

Need some animations or individual slide styles? No problem, just tell Copilot, and it’ll take care of the rest.

Via Microsoft’s blog post:

“Today marks the next major step in the evolution of how we interact with computing, which will fundamentally change the way we work and unlock a new wave of productivity growth,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “With our new copilot for work, we’re giving people more agency and making technology more accessible through the most universal interface — natural language.”

Copilot is coming to other Office apps too

That means you can use it to help you write a speech in Word, put together a to-do list in OneNote, or draft a group email in Outlook.

Plus, everything will be editable, so you can make changes directly or ask Copilot to do it for you.

How does it all work? Microsoft is using its 365 apps, a large language model, and Microsoft Graph to analyze your files and data to learn how to help you best.

It’s not just ChatGPT connected to Office; it’s a whole lot more than that.

M365 PowerPoint GetStarted Looping 031523

Now, we have to mention that Microsoft’s AI efforts have come under serious scrutiny lately. After investing heavily in OpenAI, they integrated ChatGPT into their products, resulting in Bing Chat.

Unfortunately, the launch has been marred by reports of erratic behavior and unsettling messages, but I suppose there are always hiccups when you roll something of magnitude to the general public

Regardless, this new Copilot feature sounds promising. Microsoft says to expect PowerPoint with Copilot to gradually roll out over the next coming months.

For a long time, Bing has been the search engine we use to search for and subsequently download Google Chrome before never touching Bing again.

But it looks like that is starting to change a bit, as the new Bing AI chatbot on Microsoft Edge has helped Bing search reach the 100 million daily users mark.

There has been tons of excitement surrounding AI in recent weeks. And Microsoft has been one of the biggest names in the game.

The company revealed its Bing AI chatbot last month and began rolling it out to users via invites. I then opened it up to everyone and even launched a Windows 11 update to bring AI chat directly to the desktop taskbar.

Despite the impressive user numbers, Bing remains relatively small compared to the massive user base of Google Search.

According to StatCounter, Google owns about 90% of the search market share, while Bing sits at around 6.5%.

Microsoft credits the slow-but-steady growth of its browser, Microsoft Edge, and the Bing AI chatbot preview for helping reach the 100 million user milestone.

The influx of new users is certainly a good sign for Bing, but it will be interesting to see if the platform can maintain its growth.

The hype around Bing’s AI chatbot will die down eventually, especially if Microsoft doesn’t get a grip on some of its unhinged responses.

Is Microsoft Outlook free for Mac? https://knowtechie.com/is-microsoft-outlook-free-for-mac/ https://knowtechie.com/is-microsoft-outlook-free-for-mac/#respond Tue, 07 Mar 2023 17:17:26 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=280340 Or does it require a paid subscription?

The post Is Microsoft Outlook free for Mac? appeared first on KnowTechie.

Quick Answer: Yes, Microsoft Outlook is now free for Mac. We break everything down everything you need to know below.

Microsoft Outlook has been a staple in email practically forever. The program was originally launched in 1996 as Hotmail before being rebranded to Outlook in 2012.

Outlook exists both on the web and as a downloadable app for your computer. And it’s not just for Windows devices, as there is also an Outlook app available on Mac through the App Store.

For a while, users had to have an active Microsoft 365 subscription or Office license to use the Outlook app on Mac.

Is Microsoft Outlook free on Mac?

Short answer: Yes, it is

Fortunately, for those interested, the Outlook app no longer requires any subscription or license for you to use it on Mac. It’s completely free to download and use with any email provider with IMAP support.

This is a change that came about in March of 2023. Before then, users had to have Microsoft 365 or an Office license to download the Outlook app on Mac.

The app is natively built for Mac devices. Microsoft optimized it for Mac’s M1 and M2 processors for better performance and faster speeds than before.

Image: Microsoft

Additionally, there’s a dedicated email widget for the Outlook app on Mac. This lets you easily keep up with your emails and calendar while you’re using other apps and programs.

Another feature that Microsoft is working on is the Menu Bar, giving you sneak peeks of upcoming calendar events. And Outlook Profiles are coming soon to connect your email accounts to Apple’s Focus experience.

So yes, Microsoft Outlook is now completely free on Mac. Microsoft is continuing to update and improve Outlook across both Mac and Windows devices, so look for more changes coming to the app in the future.

The latest Windows 11 update brings Microsoft’s new AI-powered Bing search directly to your desktop’s taskbar.

This is a surprise update and a quick implementation of Bing AI search. The company only just released Bing’s AI search in February, and it’s still invite-only.

However, the feature has already been used by more than one million people on the Microsoft Edge web browser and the Bing or Edge mobile app.

Microsoft says the new update will bring the feature to “hundreds of millions” of users, and it will be available right on your desktop through the taskbar search.

Also included in the latest update is Phone Link for iOS. Phone Link is a Windows feature that has been available on Android for a while now.

It allows users to connect their phones, so they never miss important calls or messages while on the computer.

The update also adds an improved widget system with support for third-party options from Meta and Spotify. Plus, the operating system is finally adding an official screen recording tool.

As with most Windows updates, this one also includes several minor features and changes. However, the ones outlined above are the most significant.

This update is available starting March 1. But if you want to try out Bing’s AI chat in the Windows 11 taskbar, you’ll still need to sign up to preview the feature.

The new AI-powered Bing is far from perfect. The bot gave some truly unhinged answers to prompts during its initial rollout. However, Microsoft responded to criticisms and ensured that Bing’s AI would continue to improve.

 • You can easily access and launch their favorite apps and files from the Start menu
 • It's lightweight and does not significantly impact system performance or resource usage
Cons:
 • A previous version displayed choppy animations, particularly on higher refresh rate monitors. But that seems to have been addressed in an update.

In either case, Patch My PC Home Updater ensures that all of your applications are fully up-to-date, patching vulnerabilities and keeping everything running smoothly.

The utility includes over 300 common apps that you can easily install or update at any time, and Patch My PC also scans your system to identify outdated software and flag it for updating.

The purpose of CCleaner is to keep the files on your computer cleaned up and running efficiently. It easily removes temporary files, cookies, browsing history, log files, and anything else that can build up and slow your PC down over time.

CCleaner is completely free to use. You can download the program and use it to help manage those pesky files that build up without paying anything.
