Apple, known for its dramatic product launches, is at it again.

This time, the much-anticipated iPhone 15 Pro Max (or iPhone 15 Ultra, or whatever they’re calling it) might be fashionably late to its debut.

An anonymous 9to5Mac source suggests we might be looking at an October release instead of the usual late September launch.

But don’t start hyperventilating into your Apple-branded paper bag just yet. Apple’s annual September event is still on track. We expect the entire iPhone 15 lineup, including the basic iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro.

However, the show’s star, the Pro Max/Ultra, might make us wait a little longer.

The reason for this delay?

A shortage of camera parts. Sony, Apple’s long-time collaborator, is reportedly lagging in producing the periscope telephoto camera, a rumored exclusive for the Pro Max/Ultra.

This isn’t just any camera, folks. It’s expected to take the iPhone’s zoom capabilities from “meh” to “wow,” potentially allowing for up to 10x optical zoom.

This isn’t the first time an iPhone has played hard to get. Last year, the iPhone 14 Plus also made a late entrance. So, while we’re all eager to get our hands on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, we might need to practice a bit of patience.

Will the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s delay be worth the wait?

Despite the potential delay, the iPhone 15 series is set to strut its stuff on September 12. With rumored features like the Action button, 3-nanometer A17 Bionic chipset on the Pro models, and Dynamic Island notches for all models, it promises to be worth the wait.

So, if you’re planning to pre-order the iPhone 15 Pro Max, brace yourself for slightly longer wait times. If all goes to plan, hopefully, it’s worth the wait.

The next iPhone event is almost here, where Apple is expected to unveil the entire iPhone 15 series with multiple upgrades. However, the biggest improvement is rumored to be Apple swapping the Lightning port for a USB-C port

We’ve even heard rumors that some of the models could support faster charging speeds, and now we have a corroborating rumor that says the iPhone 15 will support up to 35W charging speed.

Apple is upping its charging game with iPhone 15

iPhone 15 series is coming
Source: 9to5Mac

According to the report by 9to5Mac, multiple industry sources have claimed that the new iPhone 15 models will feature a higher charging speed of up to 35W.

The iPhone 15 could have a charging speed that is considerably faster than that of the iPhone 14 Pro at 27W, and the vanilla iPhone 14 at 20W.

In its current charging speed, the iPhone 14 Pro Max takes about two hours to fully charge, which is quite a long time when compared to current-gen mid-range and flagship Android smartphones.

In contrast, Samsung’s latest flagship, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, features a 45W charging speed that lets the device go from zero to 100 within an hour. While the rumored 35W charging speed is still on the lower end, it’s a considerable improvement compared to the iPhone 14.

Last year, Apple also introduced a new 35W Dual USB-C charger capable of charging current iPhones. And if the rumor is true, iPhone 15 could take full advantage of this charger, provided that it isn’t connected to another device, as it will split the power delivery.

However, Apple also sells a 30W USB-C charger, designed for the MacBook Air, which also works with iPhones and iPads.

That said, it is still unclear whether the new 35W charging speed will be limited to the Pro models or will work with all iPhone 15 models.

Apple is expected to hold the iPhone 15 event on September 12 or 13, and it is also expected to be a pre-recorded event, where we will finally get all the answers.

The post When is the new Apple Watch coming out? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: Apple is likely to release the Series 9 Apple Watch in September, 2023.

Much like its flagship iPhones, Apple tends to release a new Apple Watch model every year. The company has released a new model every year since 2015, when the original Watch came out.

While it’s still relatively early in 2023, it’s safe to assume that Apple will stick to its previous schedule with the next wearable.

After all, the company launched the Apple Watch Ultra last year. We’ll surely see some of the new features found in that model added to the Series 9 later in 2023.

Apple Watch Series 9 release date

Short answer: Most likely in the fall of 2023

Every single Apple Watch has been announced in September, except for the original, which was in April of 2015.

Apple has released the wearable alongside that year’s iPhone range, except for 2020, when the iPhone wasn’t announced until the month after.

SeriesRelease Date
1st GenerationApril 24, 2015
Series 2September 7, 2016
Series 3September 12, 2017
Series 4September 21, 2018
Series 5September 20, 2019
Series 6September 18, 2020
Series 7October 15, 2021
Series 8September 16, 2022

As to when in September, we have a couple of pointers. Apple almost always has its iPhone and Apple Watch event on the second Tuesday of September.

Sometimes it’s been the second Wednesday. Expect the second week of September again this year, so that’s around September 12 or 13.

Of course, this Series 9 release date prediction might not be accurate. Delays are always possible, and even if the wearable is announced, we might have to wait to be able to order one.

Last year, there was a little over a week gap between the announcement and release. As long as there aren’t any supply issues, we expect about the same time between the announcement and the official release date.

We’ll have to wait to find out exactly when the Apple Watch Series 9 will be released. Until then, we’ll keep bringing you all the rumors as we find them out.

Overall, while we may not have a definitive answer yet as to when exactly the Apple Watch will come out, one thing is certain – it is definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

With its cutting-edge technology and stylish design, it has all the makings of another game-changing product from Apple. So mark your calendars and get ready for what could potentially be one of this year’s most exciting gadget release

The post Apple’s iPhone 15 series may not get the official leather case appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
Apple’s iPhone 15 series is all set to be unveiled this September, according to the most recent leaks, likely to be a pre-recorded event like last year’s.

iPhone 15 leaks paint a positive image of Apple’s upcoming smartphone, including the addition of USB-C, Action Button on the Pro variants, and more.

However, the latest report is slightly less positive, indicating Apple might discontinue its iconic leather iPhone case with the iPhone 15 series.

No Apple leather case for the iPhone 15?

Multiple leakers and industry insiders have claimed that Apple plans to discontinue its iconic leather iPhone case, and now 9to5Mac is also reporting the same. However, at the moment, it is not clear why Apple is stopping the iPhone leather case line.

Apple’s iPhone leather case ranges between $59 and $129, and it’s pretty popular among iPhone fans since the leather case was first introduced in 2013 with the iPhone 5s. They’re even some of the best iPhone 14 cases you can buy today.

The tanned leather iPhone cases with soft microfiber lining have been a staple for iPhone users and are considered the most premium first-party phone cases since their launch.

Down the road, Apple even added MagSafe charging to the cases with the launch of the iPhone 12, as a part of its attempt to create a MagSafe accessories ecosystem. We speculate that Apple may introduce an even more premium case in its place.

That said, it is quite possible that Apple is taking the eco-friendly route and stopping leather case production as it has a giant carbon footprint.

Over the years, the company has eliminated chargers and other accessories in the name of saving the environment, and leather is far from eco-friendly.

It could be the actual reason, or Apple could use this reason to justify discontinuing the leather case while introducing a more expensive case for the iPhone 15 series made from a different material.

iOS 17 inches closer to release with beta 6 https://knowtechie.com/ios-17-beta-6-released/ https://knowtechie.com/ios-17-beta-6-released/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2023 15:31:59 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=313908 The push towards a public full release intensifies.

The post iOS 17 inches closer to release with beta 6 appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Takeaways: iOS 17 beta 6 is available for developers. With the iPhone 15 release next month, this is close to a final version release of iOS 17.

Apple released iOS 17 beta 6 to developers and public beta testers this week. That’s in advance of an expected full public release next month.

However, it’s a minor update over iOS 17 beta 5, probably because Apple engineers will be busy bug fixing ahead of the public release.

It does include two major UI changes that might be of interest to users.

The “End Call” button has returned to the center

The speaker is using FaceTime to communicate with someone, and has muted their microphone, added a keypad, and is ending the call. Full Text: ? Speaker FaceTime Mute + Add Keypad End

Apple made multiple changes to the Phone app during the iOS 17 betas, including the interface shown during a call. This upset some users.

The most controversial call interface change is the new placement of the “End Call” button. Beta 5 moved this from the usual centered position to the right-most corner.

That played havoc with muscle memory, as the end call button has long been in the center. As a result, users started hitting the Keypad button or even FaceTime when trying to end a call.

It looks like Apple has listened and returned the button to the center. So, no more hitting the wrong button while ending a call.

iOS 17 also adds NameDrop for easy contact sharing and Contact Poster, which enables full-screen custom images for incoming callers.

iMessage interface changes in iOS 17

The other important change with iOS 17 beta 6 concerns iMessage. The Messages app gets new features, including Live Stickers, Swipe to Reply, and audio message transcription.

Not only those, but Apple has also redesigned how iOS users interact with the iMessage app. The iMessage app list in iOS 17 betas is hidden under a “+” button.

If you tap the button, it expands, showing the iMessage app controls. The Camera and Photos shortcuts are on this menu now, without dedicated buttons on the input field.

However, this is confusing. Previously, it was much easier when all the options had dedicated shortcuts, And now, sending photos via the iMessage app requires additional steps.

iOS 17 beta 6 keeps the interface the same, with an added shortcut. If you press and hold the “+” button, iMessage will automatically show the Photo Picker.

We expect iOS 17 to release to the public shortly after the iPhone 15 launch event in September.

Apple’s ‘batterygate’ ends with a $65 payday for iPhone users https://knowtechie.com/apple-batterygate-65-rip/ https://knowtechie.com/apple-batterygate-65-rip/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2023 00:09:26 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=313857 In the grand scheme of things, Batterygate may be just a blip on Apple's radar, a $500 million hiccup for a company worth trillions.

Apple users, we did it! Get ready to cash in on a long-awaited resolution. After a tumultuous legal battle, Apple has agreed to compensate its users with a cool $65 each as part of a settlement for a 2018 class-action lawsuit.

The lawsuit accused Apple of intentionally slowing down iPhones to nudge consumers into upgrading to newer models. Sneaky, right?

In March 2020, Apple agreed to shell out a whopping $500 million to settle the lawsuit. However, the settlement hit a roadblock when two iPhone owners appealed against certain terms of the agreement. The appeal made its way to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, but alas, it was denied.

This legal saga has been a rollercoaster ride spanning five long years, with approximately three million claims filed since the lawsuit’s inception. Apple finally admitted in 2017 that they did indeed slow down the iOS software on older iPhones.

Their justification? It was all to prevent older batteries from randomly shutting off devices. Hmm, sounds fishy, doesn’t it? Apple, of course, denied any ulterior motives for pushing customers to buy new batteries or upgrade to the latest iPhone.

But the plot thickens.

A smartphone with a mobile phone case is being used to access multimedia and communicate electronically.

Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, LLP, the law firm representing the iPhone claimants, announced a major victory. The 9th circuit rejected Apple’s attempt to dismiss the case, allowing the litigation to proceed.

The claims covered violations of various laws, including the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, California’s Computer Data Access and Fraud Act, California’s Unfair Competition Law, and Trespass to Chattels.

“The settlement is the result of years of investigation and hotly contested litigation,” Mark C. Molumphy, a partner at Cotchett, Pitre & McCarthy, LLP, said in a press release. “We are extremely proud that this deal has been approved, and following the Ninth Circuit’s order, we can finally provide immediate cash payments to impacted Apple customers,” he added.

In a court filing back in 2019, Apple argued that lithium-ion batteries naturally deteriorate over time, becoming less effective.

Okay, that is a fair point, but here’s the kicker: they conveniently forgot to inform users about the iOS updates that allegedly slowed down their phones. Users only discovered the issue when their iPhones started shutting down unexpectedly, even with 30% battery life remaining.

Now, here’s the twist. Apple agreed to pay the claimants a hefty sum between $310 million and $500 million. The exact payout for each participant in the class-action lawsuit depends on the number of approved claims.

If you owned any of these iPhones and filed a claim, cash is coming your way

Curious about which iPhones were affected? The list includes the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s Plus, and SE running on iOS 10.2.1 systems before December 21, 2017.

Oh, and let’s not forget the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus running on iOS 11.2 or later before that date. If you own one of these models, you might be in for a nice surprise.

iPhone ModeliOS VersionAffected Before
iPhone 6iOS 10.2.1December 21, 2017
iPhone 6 PlusiOS 10.2.1December 21, 2017
iPhone 6s PlusiOS 10.2.1December 21, 2017
iPhone SEiOS 10.2.1December 21, 2017
iPhone 7iOS 11.2 or laterDecember 21, 2017
iPhone 7 PlusiOS 11.2 or laterDecember 21, 2017

Can you still file the $65 ‘batterygate’ claim?

Unfortunately, no. The claims submission period ended on October 6, 2020.

In the grand scheme of things, Batterygate may be just a blip on Apple’s radar, a $500 million hiccup for a company worth trillions.

But it’s a blip that has left a lasting impact. It’s a story of corporate missteps, consumer outrage, and, ultimately, accountability. It’s a reminder that even tech giants aren’t invincible to the demands of transparency and honesty.

So, if you’re clutching one of the affected iPhones, don’t expect a windfall. The claims window has sadly closed. But take solace in the fact that your slower iPhone played a part in a larger narrative.

It’s a narrative that has pushed Apple and other tech companies to be more upfront about their practices. And if you’re holding one of the newer iPhones, relish in the knowledge that your device’s battery life is a testament to lessons learned the hard way.

And to those still waiting for their $65 payout from the lawsuit, remember – every little bit counts in the pursuit of the latest iPhone. After all, the iPhone 15 Pro isn’t going to pay for itself, is it?

Can Apple Watch measure blood pressure? https://knowtechie.com/can-apple-watch-measure-blood-pressure/ https://knowtechie.com/can-apple-watch-measure-blood-pressure/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2023 14:46:06 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=203848 Apple Watches are stuffed with features, but what about blood pressure monitoring and testing?

The post Can Apple Watch measure blood pressure? appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>

Quick Answer: No, the Apple Watch does not currently measure blood pressure. While it can track heart rate and ECG, it lacks the sensors needed to directly monitor blood pressure. Apple has filed patents suggesting future models may add this capability, but existing watches cannot measure blood pressure.

The Apple Watch is a marvel of miniaturized technology. Seriously, it’s a wrist-mounted computer with a ton of features and health-monitoring options. But does that include measuring blood pressure alongside everything else?

Apple has stuffed the Apple Watch full of advanced technology, including a ton of sensors. It can track your biometrics, sleep, movement, and more. It can even dial 911 when it detects a fall, which is pretty darn great.

With all of those sensors, can it measure your blood pressure?

Can the Apple Watch measure your blood pressure?

Short answer: Not yet

The last time we heard anything about Apple working on blood pressure monitoring, the feature was still a ways off from completion.

Apple was trying to figure out a way to measure it without directly measuring it. Also, it was planned to show blood pressure trends, not baseline measurements of systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

apple watch six
Image: Apple

That’s not to say that a future Apple Watch couldn’t show baseline measurements. A British start-up called Rockley Photonics has Apple as one of its main customers.

If you guessed that Rockley makes sensors that could measure blood pressure, give yourself a gold star. They make sensors that can measure everything from blood alcohol levels to glucose and even blood pressure.

Those are potentially ready for market next year, so the Apple Watch 9 or later could feature accurate blood pressure monitoring.

So, in summary – the Apple Watch does not currently measure blood pressure directly on its own, but Apple may add this capability via new sensors and algorithms in future models.

For now, those needing to monitor their blood pressure should use a dedicated FDA-approved blood pressure monitor device rather than rely on estimations from an Apple Watch app.

Apple Watch X will be a major redesign launching next year https://knowtechie.com/apple-watch-x-redesign-next-year/ https://knowtechie.com/apple-watch-x-redesign-next-year/#respond Tue, 15 Aug 2023 08:39:16 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=313621 New magnetic band attachment is also being tested.

The post Apple Watch X will be a major redesign launching next year appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
There have been multiple iterations of the Apple Watch, with minor technical upgrades in every iteration, while the overall design remained mostly the same.

The biggest departure from Apple’s tried and tested formula was seen last year with the Apple Watch Ultra, which delivers the best premium feature Apple has to offer.

Even the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9 is said to be coming with minor upgrades, which is slated to release in September alongside the iPhone 15 series

However, we are not discussing 2023’s Apple Watch iteration but the tenth iteration of Apple’s smartwatch, the Apple Watch X, which will be launched next year and is expected to get a redesign.

What to expect from the Apple Watch X

Renowned journalist Mark Gurman has stated in his latest Power On newsletter that Apple is planning to launch the “Apple Watch X” in 2024, and to celebrate the tenth anniversary of one of the world’s most successful smartwatch lineup, Apple is planning a redesign of the standard Apple Watch series.

According to Gurman, the company is planning to launch the Apple Watch X with a thinner design and a new band attachment style.

Since its launch, the Apple Watch has kept the staple sliding-and-locking mechanism. Besides the minor size differences, Apple’s decision to stick to the same mechanism enabled the customers to use older bands with newer watches, making the bands backward compatible.

Apple Watch X is expected to get a major redesign
Image: KnowTechie

Overall, it was an excellent idea on Apple’s part that kept the customers happy and enabled them to experiment with different bands without breaking the bank.

Although Apple’s design mechanism was way ahead of its time, Apple held it back for almost a decade. The mechanism has now become outdated, and it takes considerable space that can be used for other components.

However, we speculate Apple has realized it to change it. The Cupertino company is rumored to be working on a new magnetic band attachment system, but whether it will be available with the Apple Watch X is still unclear.

In terms of hardware, Apple is working on a microLED display that is rumored to be considerably better than the current OLED display. The company is also rumored to be working on a blood pressure monitoring feature.

But Apple Watch X is still a year away, so more rumors are bound to appear, and it remains to be seen which changes end up on the final products.

iPhone 14 Pro users raise alarm over rapid battery health decline https://knowtechie.com/iphone-14-pro-battery-health-issue/ https://knowtechie.com/iphone-14-pro-battery-health-issue/#respond Mon, 14 Aug 2023 18:27:43 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=313434 Is this a bug or just normal wear and tear?

The post iPhone 14 Pro users raise alarm over rapid battery health decline appeared first on KnowTechie.

]]>
iPhone 14 Pro users are venting their frustrations, complaining of deteriorating battery health. That’s a problem, as the current generation of iPhones hasn’t even been on the market for a full year.

Some of the affected users have shown screenshots of their Battery Health statistics, which show that the battery has degraded to under 90% in less than a year.

For context, one of our editors purchased an iPhone 11 Pro in early 2020 that has degraded to 82% after three years of heavy use.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max users are sharing screenshots of their battery health on social media platforms, including X and Reddit. Several posts show battery degradation ranging from 86% to 93%.

That’s a hefty decrease, especially for a smartphone that costs a thousand dollars or more. Is this a problem for Apple, or is it a software bug miscounting the battery health?

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max users are unhappy with Apple

To be clear, not all iPhone 14 Pro users are experiencing battery health issues. Some owners are reporting 95% or higher battery health, which is fine, given a year of usage.

However, the number of people reporting battery health scores below 90% is concerning, and here’s what Apple has to say:

The power needs of iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and later are dynamically monitored, and performance is managed so that it can address these needs in real time. The system is more advanced than previous iPhone battery and power management systems and allows your iPhone to reduce performance impacts from battery aging.

All rechargeable batteries are consumables and have a limited lifespan — eventually their capacity and performance decline so that they need to be replaced.

What is ‘Battery Health’ in iPhones?

ios battery health
Image: KnowTechie

Battery Health came to iOS after a series of lawsuits showed Apple was intentionally slowing down older iPhones. The company’s reasoning was that degraded batteries could make the devices reboot unexpectedly if running at full speed.

To appease everyone, Apple added battery health stats to the Settings app. Let’s talk about how it works.

Apple doesn’t publicly disclose the iPhone’s battery capacities, but it isn’t a state secret thanks to regulatory filings (via MacRumors). For example, the iPhone 14 Pro has a 3,279 mAh battery, which we’ll call 3,200 mAh for easier math.

In the case of the user with 86% battery health, that would mean it can only charge to 2,752 mAh now after a year. That could be the difference between needing to plug in a charger at lunchtime or the phone lasting until the end of the day.

This is expected over time as lithium-ion batteries wear down over successive charging cycles. However, it shouldn’t be happen this quickly, which is why users are so annoyed.

When should I replace an iPhone’s battery?

Battery replacement will be necessary eventually, although it’s hard to say when, as every user’s workflow is different.

The type of apps you have installed and how often you use them makes a big difference compared to a user who only sparingly uses their phone.

Apple has a built-in reminder once the battery health gets under 80% to go into a Genius Bar and get the iPhone serviced.

You could follow their advice; after all, the company knows its own devices. Or you could wait, but we suggest a 60% battery health as the point you really should consider replacing the battery.

How much does it cost to replace iPhone’s battery?

The one-year warranty that comes with every new iPhone purchase and AppleCare+ extended warranty plans cover iPhone battery replacements.

To get a replacement, the battery health rating needs to have degraded less than 80 percent of the original capacity.

For battery replacements outside of the warranty or before reaching 80%, the following prices apply:

 • iPhone 14: $99
 • iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone 13: $89
 • iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and earlier: $69

The upcoming iPhone SE 4 will likely be unveiled in 2025

Unknown21 has teased the design of the iPhone SE 4, which he says will be based on the iPhone 14, which echoed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s statement from earlier this year.

He added the device will sport a USB-C port, making it the first time Apple is moving away from a Lightning port on iPhone SE. He also noted that the device will have Face ID, debunking the previous rumors that indicated even the new iPhone SE will retain Touch ID

However, the most interesting revelation is that the iPhone SE 4 may also feature an Action Button. Although what we know so far indicates that Apple has reserved the new Action Button only for the iPhone 15 Pro models.

If this information is accurate, Apple is going out of its way to make the iPhone SE a more lucrative purchase, which could turn out badly for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, especially if they skip the Action Button.

That said, the iPhone SE 4 will again feature a single rear camera like the current generation.

However, nothing is set in stone yet. iPhone SE 4 is not expected to launch until 2025. So, we have a long way to go and a lot more rumors to sort through.
