It’s now summer, and barbeque season is in full swing. There’s almost nothing better during the hot, sweltering months than saucing up meat and slapping it on hot steel.

The primal joy of burning wood in a pellet grill adds to the excitement and is the recipe for a perfect family gathering.

The thing is, many grills, smokers, or pits aren’t built to last. For the most part, they’re constructed from thin metals or worse. That’s where Yoder Smokers’ competition-grade pellet grills enter the picture.

Quick Verdict: The Yoder YS640s pellet grill makes it simple for anyone to be a pitmaster. The thick steel construction and well-controlled firebox mean you can worry about the recipe instead of the grill, resulting in perfectly smoked or grilled food every time. At $2,399, it isn’t cheap, but it will give you years of quality, repeatable cooking.
Pros:
  • American Made
  • 1,070 square inches of cook space can fit tons of food
  • Versatile in its ability to smoke and direct-flame grill
Cons:
  • Expensive
  • Extremely heavy (comes on a pallet and needs multiple people to move)

These bad boys use so much steel that even the smallest weighs 255 pounds. That’s a lot of quality to keep in heat and keep in the essential blue smoke for the perfect smoked meats.

We’re reviewing the $2,399 Yoder YS640s today. It’s a midrange pellet grill with automated temperature controls, keeping temps within 5-25 degrees of your setpoint.

Yes, that means your grill is controllable by Wi-Fi, and we’ll show you why that’s a good thing.

Who is the Yoder YS640s for?

pellet grill with roaring flames
Image: Joe Rice-Jones / KnowTechie

This is an overbuilt BBQ machine made for serious grill masters or anyone with dreams of becoming one; it’s that easy to use. From low-and-slow smoking sessions to direct-fire grilling over 700f, this grill can do it all.

A key factor is the pellet fuel system. A small firebox ignited by a ceramic electronic starter provides all the heat.

The pellets themselves are made from compressed sawdust, repurposing what would otherwise be waste from sawmills. An auger feeds the tightly packed pellets into the firebox in a precise amount to finely control temperatures.

Price, design, and features of the Yoder YS640s

The Yoder YS640s is available for $2,399 (plus shipping) directly from Yoder or from a wide range of vendors specializing in barbeque equipment.

When shipped, it comes on a pallet, and the basic cart we are reviewing comes disassembled. You’ll want several people to put it together as the thick steel cooking chamber is unwieldy to move around.

Yoder does make a smaller version of this grill, the YS480s. It’s around 270 fewer square inches of cook surface, which could present issues depending on how many people you regularly cook for.

To my recollection, I’ve never heard someone say, “Dang, I wish I’d bought a smaller grill,” but I’ve heard the opposite on numerous occasions. The YS640s is large enough for two packer-sized briskets or multiple racks of ribs (with any multi-rack accessory).

Yoder offers a wide selection of accessories for its grills, some of which are essential in our eyes.

For instance, the stainless steel grease catcher is a must-have, as fat runs off the hinged lid and otherwise makes a mess of the front panels.

So is the all-weather cover, which keeps moisture off your grill when you’re not using it. Yoder sells an official tailored cover, but you can likely find comparable third-party options as well.

For direct grilling fans, the Grillgrate accessory is a must-buy. These aluminum inserts slot together to either create peaks for searing grill marks on steaks or a flat surface for cooking burgers when flipped over.

And what grill would be complete without a cast-iron griddle for cooking breakfasts, fajitas, or anything else that needs consistent heat?

Alternatively, griddles from other brands like Lodge can work as well, though they may shift around slightly on top of the grill grates.

Setting up the Yoder YS640s

yoder pellet grill on a huge pallet for shipping
Image: Joe Rice-Jones/KnowTechie

Delivery day was eventful, mainly because I was unsure how I would bring the 335-pound grill up to the deck. Eventually, four guys had to carry it up the stairs. Yes, it took four people.

You can possibly put the YS640s together on your own, but it’s not recommended. You will want at least one other person to stabilize the cart while putting it together.

The pallet it arrived on weighed nearly 450 pounds- this is not a lightweight, stamped steel pellet grill. Putting it together took some time: first, pushing the carton upright, then bolting on the cart before setting it down.

Yoder uses 1/8th inch thick steel and welds it together for the cook box. The cooking area is set up like a traditional offset stick burner, with the firebox on the left and the chimney on the top right.

That gives it the ability to have dual zone cooking, with focused heat over the burning fuel or a more even temperature across the entire area.

yoder variable damper arm
Image: Joe Rice-Jones/KnowTechie

The YS640s has a variable damper to control heat distribution. Pulling the damper out to about 9 inches provides a relatively even temperature across the entire cooking surface.

Pushing it fully in restricts airflow and quickly increases temperatures on the left side above 700°F, suitable for searing steaks or charring vegetables.

Cooking up a storm on the Yoder YS640s pellet grill

A metal pellet grill sits open and ready for cooking
Image: Joe Rice-Jones/KnowTechie

The YS640s that we received for this review has a cooking space of 1,040 square inches. It is equipped with four chromed stainless steel grates on the bottom level and an upper-level rack made from expanded sheet metal. That’s a ton of space to heat up.

Because of this, the Yoder uses up slightly more pellets than most of the competition. Even with a well-managed firepot, it can consume anywhere between one and four pounds of pellets per hour.

We found that most of the cooking required using just over half a 20-pound bag for a slow ribs smoke. We used competition blends of multiple hardwoods, which might have been a mistake for consumption.

Yoder suggests selecting pellets that are predominantly oak or hardwood with a similar level of hardness. This will produce the best blue smoke while reducing consumption and the risk of flameouts caused by the fuel burning too quickly.

Smoking time on the pellet grill

yoder pellet grill smoking meats
Image: Joe Rice-Jones/KnowTechie

The YS640s’ offset smoker design means it performs great when smoking foods. The cooking chamber is well insulated by thick steel, and because everything is welded, the only place smoke escapes is the chimney stack.

That gives any griller of any skill level the best chance of success.

We smoked St Louis-style ribs, beef ribs, belly pork, Lechon belly roll, and more on the YS640s, and everything came out perfectly. The meats had deep smoke rings with a bright red coloration and were full of flavor.

It won’t quite achieve the same level of smoky flavor as offset stick burners, but it’s not far off and requires much less effort.

meats cooked on a yoder pellet grill
Image: Joe Rice-Jones/KnowTechie

We smoked everything at either 225°F or 300°F, depending on the type of meat. One thing to keep in mind is that the area near the chimney on the right tends to be slightly hotter than the temperature probe on the left.

It’s not a huge issue, but you’ll want to be aware of any temperature changes for the best cooking conditions.

Grilling time on the Yoder YS640s pellet grill

A cook is grilling chicken pieces and frying french fries in a pan of hot oil over a fast food restaurant's grill.

While using the full diffuser plate is perfect for low-temperature smoking or baking, it will not result in a good sear on steaks.

The older Yoder pellet grills used to have a one-piece diffuser, but the new ones now come with a two-part diffuser. This allows you to pull the cover over the firebox in order to get direct flame action.

When the damper is fully opened and the variable damper is pushed all the way to the left, I achieved temperatures in excess of the 600°F. I reached temperatures in the mid-700s when flame-kissing some vegetables, which is more than enough to achieve the perfect sear on meats.

This allows the Yoder YS640s to be more than just one grill type, increasing the situations it can be used and making that price tag seem smaller when you consider how many devices it can replace.

How is the app and on-grill controller?

yoder fireboard app overlaid with a picture of roasting meat
Image: Joe Rice-Jones/KnowTechie

Yoder partnered with FireBoard, a popular temperature probe manufacturer for the YS640s’ temperature controls. Along with the main pit temperature probe, there are two probes that can be inserted into whatever you are cooking.

These three probes can be used as controls for cooking programs, allowing for a completely hands-off cooking process.

That’s important for the first few hours of any smoke before you get to the stall portion, where you’re not really adding any more smoke ring.

This also means you can cook at one temperature until you reach a desired internal temperature, and then lower the heat to keep the food warm while you wait for guests. Marvelous.

Image: Joe Rice-Jones/KnowTechie

The on-grill controller has one feature that I use almost every cook. That’s a prime button that continuously feeds pellets into the firebox when held. This helps correct for temperature loss when the lid is open for a long duration, and I love it.

Depending on your desired level of accuracy, the controller can also be set to +/- 5°F or 25°F.

You can’t start the grill from the app, which is a good safety feature. You can turn it off by starting the burnout program to stop the fire. You can also save any cooking programs for future use and see graphs of previous cooks.

What it doesn’t have are in-app preprogrammed recipe options. Sure, that can be programmed in, but having some already-installed options would be nice.

The app (or the grill, for that matter) also lacks a low pellet warning. We would appreciate it if Yoder were to include a low pellet alert in a future model or offer it as an update for existing units.

Trust me, nothing is worse than waking up to a ruined smoke just because you misjudged the fuel needed.

Alternative options to consider

When it comes to finding alternatives to the Yoder YS640s, only one pellet grill on the market today comes close to matching the premium build quality of this unit.

That’s the Maverick 1250 wood pellet grill from Pitts & Spitts. This has a similar amount of grilling area, sturdy carbon steel, and good temperature regulation. It’s slightly more expensive, but not by much.

Z Grills offers high-quality pellet grills that are more affordable, but they are made of stamped steel, which means they may not last as long before requiring replacement.

And Kamado Joe has a wide range of grills that don’t require tech to operate if you prefer to cook without WiFi connections.

Is the Yoder YS640s pellet grill right for you?

yoder branding above the grease catcher
Image: Joe Rice-Jones/KnowTechie

The Yoder YS640s is an astonishingly good grill. Having only used charcoal, wood, or gas grills before, I didn’t know what to expect. Most of those require some level of luck to get a passable result, but not the Yoder.

It took everything I threw at it and kept on ticking over, from long, slow, and low rib cooks to fast and hot sizzling over an open fire.

Yes, at $2,399, it is an expensive investment. The price tag instantly puts it out of consideration for many people, which is a shame because it has tons going for it.

The full temperature control system driven by the main temperature probe and the two movable ones makes any type of grilling or smoking nearly effortless.

That level of confidence in your grill means less watching over it during the cook and more time to enjoy family, friends and perfect your recipes. And that’s what grilling season is all about.

It’s expensive to be a high-end gamer in 2023. You have to buy a console, your yearly subscription, expensive games, and all of the accessories.

But that only gets you the basic requirements. Once you start talking TVs and audio, you’re getting in over your head.

We’re here to help alleviate a small portion of that right now. We’ve compiled the best affordable soundbars for your Xbox Series X that you can buy today.

Why should I get an affordable soundbar?

Most sound systems are bulky and don’t leave space for anything else. Soundbars are a fantastic way to upgrade your TV’s audio without taking up much room.

Not only will it enhance any shows or movies that you want to watch, the built-in audio on TVs for gaming just kind of sucks to begin with. It’s time to hear what the game developers really intended for you to hear.

To keep your bank account from being angry, we’re looking at nothing over $499.99. That might seem like a lot, but soundbars can get way more expensive than that.

Don’t worry, though. We’re keeping your budget in mind here with more affordable soundbars than not. Let’s dive in, shall we?

The best soundbars for Xbox Series X under $500

Razer Leviathan V2

The Razer Leviathan line shows up on these types of lists nearly every time. We’re including it because of its versatility with both PC and mobile devices and the rad RGB Chroma lighting.

Utilizing this soundbar for your Xbox would mean plugging it through whatever monitor or TV you’re using to play on, just like most options on this list.

It has THX Spatial Audio, offering 7.1 surround sound, which the Xbox can take advantage of. But, as mentioned, you’re not directly connecting to the console itself.

The original Leviathan model rated 4.3 on Best Buy’s website. The newer V2 model sits at the same 4.3 ratings, making this a solid option. It’s a great “bang for your buck” system.

Klipsch Cinema 600 ($549)

Klipsch Cinema 600 Sound Bar
Image: KnowTechie

This Klipsch Cinema is the priciest soundbar on this list. But, as mentioned, they get a heck of a lot more expensive than this. This beast is at a 4.3 out of 5 stars on Amazon with over 2,600 reviews, so you know it’ll be good.

Honestly, you’re paying for the length of this thing. It’s the longest piece of tech on this list at 45 inches long. That’s nearly four feet for those bad at math.

It may only have a 3.1 system built in, but it virtualizes as 5.1. It also blasts with a 600W peak power.

The top question about it on Amazon is, “How do you unpack this product?” The answer given is “Like a kid on Christmas morning.” If you want power, you have to pay for power. This Klipsch will do the trick.

Sonos is another brand that shows up on every list of audiophiles. This soundbar, like the Bose, hooks up with your other Sonos equipment like a melodic Voltron.

It sounds great as a stand-alone, but the more you add, such as the separate subwoofer, the higher quality you get.

The Sonos Playbar can be mounted and will tune itself based on necessity. They also boast that Oscar-winning sound engineers helped tune the system. So, that’s cool too.

Of course, it’s a 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon, with nearly 2,000 ratings. If you’re looking for some of the highest quality sounds without spending a grand on a single item, Sonos is the way to go.

If you want to spend a grand, the good news is that they have many options to help you do that.

Samsung has advanced the world of foldable phones with its latest release: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Unveiled amid much anticipation at Wednesday’s Samsung Unpacked event in Seoul, South Korea, the state-of-the-art flip phone is an upgrade from its predecessor, the Z Flip 4.

It’s lighter, slimmer, and flaunts a larger 3.4-inch external display, creating a gorgeous piece of tech that starts at $999.

With such a hefty investment in your pocket, securing a reliable case that can withstand drops, bumps, and the occasional accidental dip in the toilet bowl becomes an absolute necessity.

The search for the perfect balance between aesthetic appeal, durability, and cost-effectiveness can be overwhelming. We’ll walk you through our top picks to protect your Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Why you need a case for your Galaxy Z Flip 5

Most of us have undoubtedly experienced the terrible feeling of dropping our phones. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, like any gadget, is no exception, and believe us, you wouldn’t want that smooth finish to become chipped or cracked.

A good case can effortlessly shield your phone from such a disaster. But navigating the maze of available options can be daunting, with elements like material, design, and extra features to contemplate. Let’s make it less overwhelming for you.

Considerations in choosing a phone case

Before rushing to hit the ‘buy’ button, consider the following:

Material

A quality phone case not only armors your device but also amplifies its aesthetic. Cases come in various materials, from rubber and plastic to leather and metal. You may want something durable that offers a good grip, or you prioritize aesthetics.

Design

With the Z Flip 5, design compatibility is crucial as the phone’s flip function needs to move smoothly. The case should also offer unrestricted access to the phone’s ports and buttons.

Extras

Got a soft spot for added features? Some cases offer kickstands for comfortable media consumption, while others provide card slots. Choose a feature that best aligns with your lifestyle.

The Apple Watch has a stronghold over the smartwatch market.

On the Android side of things, several manufacturers make some really nice smartwatches too, and Mobvoi’s TicWatch lineup is among them. The Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5 is the latest in the lineup and makes an exciting proposition.

At $349, it sits alongside the Google Pixel Watch, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 series, and the Apple Watch Series 8. I tested a review unit sent by Mobvoi over a period of six weeks and am genuinely impressed with this watch.

However, in a saturated market, the TicWatch Pro 5 finds itself in a tough spot. The watch itself is excellent. However, a few concerns make me wonder about its place in the market.

The TicWatch Pro 5 is the first smartwatch I’ve worn after I stopped wearing automatic watches, and I was primarily impressed. In this review, we’ll go over some of the things I liked and some of the things I didn’t. Ready to dive in?

TicWatch Pro 5 Design: Simple yet effective

A person holds a black watch.
Image: Palash Volvoikar / KnowTechie

When it comes to smartwatch design, it isn’t easy to do something revolutionary. These watches don’t have the longevity or the price range of luxury watches, nor is there much room to deviate from the standard form factor and design.

The form is limiting, and improvements are mostly related to newer and shinier hardware rather than the housing itself.

That being said, the TicWatch Pro 5 isn’t exactly lacking in the design department. It has a typical design, with Mobvoi opting for a sportier feel.

The watch’s body is made up of 7000-series aluminum, which is strong and light. You get it in a single Obsidian colorway. The body’s finish is matte, while the bezel gets a gloss finish with a textured feel on the top. The buttons are firm and reflect the overall excellent build quality.

My only issue with the build was the base of the watch. The transparent panel sits over the heart rate sensors and is highly prone to scratches.

During my use, I found it gathered a whole lot of scratches, which isn’t great because it’s likely to affect the heart rate monitor over time. I recommend you hold on to the pre-installed protective film as long as possible or install a new one.

The watch comes with a bundled silicone strap, which is pretty minimalist. However, there are a ton of straps to choose from, with some bright-colored options for those that like it.

Additionally, you can use it with standard 24mm straps, which means there are many strap options. The black color of the watch body will go well with a ton of different colors, so customization isn’t going to be an issue.

The watch also sits comfortably on the wrist, which isn’t always a given with smartwatches. It’s light, and the overall size should look fine on most wrists.

TicWatch Pro 5 display: A standout dual display setup

The person is wearing a watch.
Image: Palash Volvoikar / KnowTechie

The displays are the most interesting part of this watch. I say displays because while you see just one facade, there are two displays.

Underneath, you get a nice and vibrant AMOLED, the kind you can expect to see on the best smartwatches. Over that, you have an ultra-low-power display, a good old LCD like the ones found on older digital watches.

READ MORE: What’s the difference between an LCD and AMOLED mobile display?

So, you can use this like a normal smartwatch or one of those connected Casio G-Shocks. The advantage is two-fold: you get a solid battery life boost when using the low-power display and fewer distractions!

The low-power display also gets multiple color options for backlight, which really nails the experience.

My only issue with the displays is that adding a layer of LCD over the AMOLED has made the main display a bit hazy, removing some of that contrast and clarity.

It’s well within the acceptable limits, though, and I’m sure most users won’t even notice it. The trade-off is totally worth it, especially given the advantages.

TicWatch Pro 5 software: Wear OS 3 and Mobvoi’s apps work well together

The person is wearing a watch.
Image: Palash Volvoikar / KnowTechie

The watch runs on Wear OS 3, which is a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good because Wear OS is the closest we have to a standard operating system for smartwatches that Apple doesn’t make.

It’s a bad thing because Wear OS still isn’t all that great, especially on watches not made by Samsung or Google.

For example, the TicWatch Pro 5 doesn’t get Google Assistant. Mobvoi is working with Google to bring it to the Pro 5, but there’s really not much hope. You get a great selection of apps, which is often the advantage of all things Android.

The user interacts with the graphical interface.
Source: KnowTechie

TicWatch’s suite of apps is also incredibly useful, almost making up for Google’s woes. There’s an app for every feature you could use on this watch, and TicWatch has done them very well.

Mobvoi has its fair share of issues as well, though. Delivering Wear OS 3 to its older watches has taken a long time, only opening up the beta last month.

That means the Pro 5 may not get an update to Wear OS 4 soon, either. It’s a toss-up, and even though I like this watch, if you want the latest software all the time, this may be a tough buy for you.

TicWatch Pro 5 performance: No stone left unturned

Image: Palash Volvoikar / KnowTechie

WearOS isn’t all that bad regarding performance, and the TicWatch Pro 5 has sufficient hardware power.

The Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 is one of the best wearable processors, and the watch has some of the best hardware you can get right now. That means the watch runs smoothly, and you won’t feel like it’s running out of steam at any given time.

Notifications are quick to arrive, apps open up speedily, and I didn’t see any lags during my usage. The highlight is the selection of fitness features you get, all tuned rather well.

I tried the heart rate and SpO2 measurements on this watch alongside an Apple Watch SE, and the results were pretty similar. Sleep tracking was also pretty accurate when I tried it, with only a few minutes of error.

If you want to get this fitness watch, it will serve you well. With the best hardware and acceptable software combined with a solid suite of apps from Mobvoi, the TicWatch Pro 5 performs as well as you expect.

TicWatch Pro 5 battery life: Truly multi-day battery

The person is wearing a watch.
Image: Palash Volvoikar / KnowTechie

The battery life is a massive barrier for folks looking to get a smartwatch because it adds to the inconvenience of charging an additional device daily. That was one of the reasons I stopped wearing smartwatches, too.

However, the TicWatch Pro 5 makes some big strides in the right direction with battery life.

I’m a very light smartwatch user, but I put the TicWatch Pro 5 through its paces. With semi-regular use, including using the tracking features, reading notifications, and responding every now and then, the TicWatch Pro 5 lasted between three to four days consistently.

The real showstopper here is the Essential Mode.

This super-low-power mode will turn your watch into a regular digital watch when below a set battery percentage or by schedule. It increases the battery life significantly, and you get to have the watch stay on and useful while sipping power.

With my light usage, I’m sure I could push this watch to a week without a charge if I weren’t exerting it for this review. That’s a testament to how practical the Pro 5 is, which isn’t always guaranteed with smartwatches.

It feels like the first chapter of a new generation of smartwatches — one that won’t have a smartwatch be just another device you have to plug in daily.

Alternative options to consider

Should you buy the TicWatch Pro 5?

The watch sits on the table.
Image: Palash Volvoikar / KnowTechie

While I’ve been on the smartwatch fence for a while, the TicWatch Pro 5 has me considering daily driving one again. It’s a great smartwatch with a solid build, great hardware, solid performance, and extraordinary battery life.

It feels like a turning point for TicWatch as a brand, and I hope the company can follow through with Google Assistant support and timely software updates.

For now, Mobvoi hasn’t done enough to make me trust they will handle those two issues well, so I cannot give my full vote of confidence to this watch, despite liking it a lot.

However, if you’ve decided to buy a smartwatch and aren’t an Apple Watch fan, the TicWatch Pro 5 is definitely one to consider.

I wish there were more size and color options, and an LTE option would’ve been great. However, at $350, the TicWatch Pro 5 is a pretty great value.

As previously mentioned, the TicWatch Pro 5 starts at $350, and you can find it on the company’s website and various other retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Adorama, and more.

Quick Verdict: If you're in need of no-messing-around set of headphones, the Audeze LCD-XC are certainly worth considering. They could very well be the best sounding pair of headphones I've strapped over my head. However, these are mainly used by professional audio engineers and recording musicians, so I don't suggest buying them if you don't fall into one of those categories.
Pros:
  • Incredible Sound Quality: These babies deliver a listening experience that's as close to a live performance as it gets.
  • Comfortable Design: With open-cell foam ear pads, you can jam out for hours without feeling like your head's in a vice.
  • Durability: Made with high-quality materials, these headphones are built to last.
Cons:
  • Weight: These aren't your run-of-the-mill headphones. They've got some heft to them, which might be off-putting for some users.
  • Pricey: High quality comes at a price, and the LCD-XC is no exception.

I’m just going to go ahead and say it now: The Audueze LCD-XC is, hands down, some of the best-sounding headphones I have ever tried. On the other hand, they’re also one of the most expensive I’ve encountered. But a bit more on that later.

First, some background.

Most of you may not know I have played drums professionally for over 20 years. I’m not going to bore you with my resume and all the bands I’ve played in, but the main takeaway is that I’ve been doing it for a while and not just as a hobby.

I’m a metal drummer, and with that comes strict practice schedules that consist of mind-numbing drills and mandatory 30-minute warm-up sessions.

On top of knowing how to play an instrument, a lot that goes into it is the instrument itself and the investment of time and money that goes into it.

For the most part, anyone who plays or studies music has an instrument rarely talked about, and that’s a musician’s ears. Just as I invest in getting the best drum equipment, the same goes for my ears.

This is why I will try to save you some time and tell you that these headphones are probably not for you if you’re not a musician or work in the audio engineering industry.

Short on time? Jump ahead

Let’s get one thing straight – these headphones are impressive, but they’re like a high-performance sports car – impressive at first glance, but their true power is only fully realized on the right track.

Designed with audio professionals in mind, the LCD-XC headphones truly shine when paired with additional high-end audio equipment like dedicated headphone amplifiers or DACs.

With an extended frequency response from 10Hz to 50kHz, these headphones can take advantage of lossless audio formats to deliver exceptional clarity across the entire audible spectrum. However, the LCD-XC may not reach its full potential without proper amplification.

That’s why purchasing the LCD-XC without a headphone amplifier isn’t just a waste of money – it’s practically criminal. Sellers should make it mandatory to ask buyers about this before finalizing the purchase.

Why such emphasis on a headphone amplifier? Here’s why:

Headphone amplifiers play an essential role in delivering superior sound quality by:

  • Supplying necessary power for high-impedance or low-sensitivity headphones.
  • Reducing distortion, noise, and interference for improved sound clarity.
  • Providing better control over volume levels.
  • Enhancing soundstage and imaging to create an immersive listening experience.

Who are these good for?

Good for

Audiophiles: The high-quality sound, clarity, speed, and range make these headphones a great choice for audiophiles.

Music Professionals: The detailed sound at lower volumes and the ability to come alive with adjusted EQ settings make these headphones ideal for music professionals.

Users with High-Quality Amplifiers: These headphones perform best when paired with a good amplifier, especially with balanced output.

Users Who Prefer Closed-Back Headphones: If you prefer closed-back headphones for better noise isolation, these headphones would be a good fit.

Not good for

Budget Shoppers: These headphones are high-end and come with a price tag to match. They may not be suitable for those on a tight budget.

People with Physical Discomfort: The headphones are pretty heavy, which might cause discomfort for some users over extended periods of use.

People Seeking Lightweight Headphones: If you prioritize lightweight headphones for comfort, these might not be the best choice due to their weight.

People Who Prefer Open-Back Headphones: If you prefer the natural soundstage of open-back headphones, these might not be the best choice as they are closed-back.

Who is the Ideal LCD-XC User?

Audiophiles and Professionals

The Audeze LCD-XC, part of the impressive LCD Reference series, is an audio lifeline for audiophiles and professionals. Why? Because it’s like having a private concert in your ears. The drivers are so detailed that you can almost see the musicians performing before you.

For studio engineers or music producers, this level of detail is not just a luxury; it’s a necessity.

Imagine mixing an album with headphones that don’t accurately reproduce sound. It would be like trying to paint a masterpiece while wearing sunglasses. You might get close, but you’ll miss the subtle details that make all the difference.

Casual Listeners

Now, what about casual listeners? Are these high-end headphones overkill for people who want to tap their feet to some tunes while working out at the gym? Maybe.

But think about it this way: even if you’re not a gourmet chef, wouldn’t you prefer eating at a fancy restaurant over fast food?

Sure, there’s nothing wrong with simple earbuds for listening to your favorite playlist on Spotify. But once you experience the depth and clarity of sound from an Audeze LCD-XC, returning will feel like trading in your sports car for a bicycle.

Genre Preferences

Lastly, let’s talk about genre preferences.

Whether you’re into classical music or heavy metal (or anything in between), these headphones are fully capable. The wide dynamic range and excellent transient response mean they can handle any music.

  • Do you love jazz? Hear every pluck of those double bass strings.
  • Can’t get enough of EDM? Feel every beat drop.
  • Is classical more your thing? Experience each note from the orchestra as if you were sitting in the front row.

So who exactly is the ideal user for Audeze’s LCD-XC? Well, anyone who appreciates good music!

Whether mixing tracks in a studio or jamming out on your commute home, these headphones will elevate your audio experience. But as I mentioned, if you’re a casual music listener, there are other options. If you make a living off of music, buy these.

Audeze LCD-XC Features and Specifications

Technical Specifications

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty of this beast, shall we? The Audeze LCD-XC packs a punch with its technical capabilities.

It boasts a frequency range of 10Hz to 50kHz, enough to make any audiophile drool. Its impedance is 20 ohms, making it compatible with most amps.

The planar magnetic drivers in these headphones are something else. They’re not your run-of-the-mill dynamic driver headphones. These puppies use thin-film diaphragms and powerful magnetic fields, delivering insane detail across the entire frequency response spectrum.

  • Frequency Range: 10Hz – 50kHz
  • Impedance: 20 Ohms
  • Sensitivity: 103 dB/1mW
  • Maximum Power Handling: 5W RMS

Frequency Range

It boasts a frequency range of 10Hz to 50kHz, enough to make any audiophile drool. Its impedance is 20 ohms, making it compatible with most amps out there.

Planar magnetic drivers

The planar magnetic drivers in these headphones are something else. They’re not your run-of-the-mill dynamic driver headphones. These puppies use thin-film diaphragms coupled with powerful magnetic fields, delivering insane detail across the entire frequency response spectrum.

Unique Features

The Audeze LCD-XC isn’t just about raw power and eye-popping specs. There’s more to this gadget than meets the eye or ear.

One thing that sets these magnetic headphones apart from competitors like the d8000 pro is their Fazor element technology.

This tech guides sound waves through the headphone, reducing diffraction and distortion while improving detail and imaging.

Another unique feature is their earpads are made from open-cell foam covered in leather for comfort during those long listening sessions.

Driver Technology

These aren’t your grandpa’s headphones. As mentioned earlier, the LCD-XC uses planar magnetic drivers instead of traditional dynamic drivers in many other models.

Why does this matter? Planar magnetic drivers deliver better transient response and lower distortion levels than their dynamic counterparts. In layperson’s terms, they make everything sound better.

Connectivity Options

Regarding connectivity options, you’ve got quarter-inch and XLR inputs at your disposal here – pretty standard stuff for high-end cans like these.

Weight Distribution Impact

Let’s cut to the chase; these headphones are really heavy. As much as I’d love to sugarcoat it, there’s no denying that their weight could make playing a live show or enduring a long recording session quite challenging.

I’ll be completely honest; they’re bulky, and getting the fit right can be a bit of a struggle.

You might still feel like you’re doing neck lifts at the gym during extended listening sessions.

Don’t get me wrong; these aren’t some cheaply made headphones that will fall apart after a few uses. They’re built tough enough to withstand daily wear and tear while delivering top-notch audio quality.

Remember, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill headphone box we’re talking about here – it’s an investment into an auditory experience unlike any other. But achieving audio nirvana wasn’t supposed to be easy (or light), right?

Evaluating LCD-XC Comfort and Fit

Comfort Level Assessment

Let’s face it; no one wants to feel like they’ve strapped a brick to their head when jamming out.

Other than being a couple of pounds overweight, some qualities make them comfortable. The pads? Oh, they’re plushier than a high-end hotel pillow.

You might think, “But what about after I’ve been wearing them for hours?” Good question!

Due to their size and weight, the LCD-XC headphones may not be ideal for extended use during active performances. While most listeners should be comfortable with long studio or home listening sessions, the heft could pose challenges for some users.

For example, drummers moving on stage may find the LCD-XCs cumbersome over time compared to more lightweight headphones or in-ear monitors.

However, for mixing and tracking in the studio or focused listening at home, the LCD-XCs provide an exceptional listening experience for extended periods.

Fit for All Head Sizes/Shapes

Here’s where the LCD-XC makes up for it.

Got a noggin that’s more basketball than a bowling ball? No problem! The size of these headphones adjusts to fit different head sizes and shapes comfortably.

I have a very weird-shaped head, and surprisingly, the LCD-XC had no problem conforming to my dome. So whether you’ve got a dome like an alien or as petite as a fairy, the LCD series has got you covered.

Material Quality and Comfort/Fit

Quality matters not just for sound but also for comfort and fit. You’ll find that Audeze didn’t skimp on materials here. The pads are made from premium leather (or vegan-friendly alternatives), ensuring maximum comfort during prolonged use.

Analyzing Audeze LCD-XC Build Quality

Image: Kevin Raposo / KnowTechie

Durability: I’m not impressed

I expected better durability and construction quality for headphones at this premium price point.

Within the first couple weeks of use, one of the ear cushions detached completely, held on only by glue. Later, a screw loosening caused an earcup to shift out of position.

While these may have been isolated incidents, such issues are concerning for headphones costing $1300. The loose ear cushion, in particular, seems indicative of subpar assembly, as it came apart so quickly.

While I could easily re-tighten the loose screw to remedy that problem, headphones marketed to audio professionals should be built to withstand regular use without parts coming loose.

And ear cushions should be securely fastened not prone to falling off due to weak adhesive. For the cost, I would expect sturdier craftsmanship and durability from the LCD-XC model.

While the audio quality is superb, the construction leaves room for improvement to match the premium price.

Design Aesthetics

Regarding design aesthetics, the LCD-XC is the George Clooney of headphones – classy, elegant, and never out of style.

The matte black finish gives off a sleek vibe, while the leather ear pads add a touch of luxury. And let’s not even start on that cool industrial look that screams, “I mean business.”

Cable Quality, Connectors & Overall Construction

But what about the cables? Well, let me tell you – these aren’t your run-of-the-mill flimsy wires.

The LCD-XC uses professional-grade braided cables with robust connectors that can withstand critical listening sessions without sweat.

  • Braided Cables: These babies are thick and durable enough to survive tangled or yanked.
  • Robust Connectors: They’re gold-plated for maximum conductivity (and swankiness).

Longevity Based on Build Quality

Alright, folks, time for some real talk – will these headphones stand the test of time?

After my experience, it’s tough to tell. Soundwise, I know they’ll hold up with no issue, but everything else is in the air. However, with proper care, there’s no reason why they won’t last you several years.

Just remember:

  1. Don’t expose them to extreme temperatures.
  2. Clean them regularly.
  3. Don’t use them as a chew toy for your dog!

Pros, Cons, and Value of LCD-XC

The Good & the Bad

Let’s cut to the chase. The Audeze LCD-XC headphones are no joke. They’ve got some serious pros that make them worth considering:

  • Incredible Sound Quality: These babies deliver a listening experience that’s as close to a live performance.
  • Comfortable Design: With open-cell foam ear pads, you can jam out for hours without feeling like your head’s in a vice.
  • Durability: Made with high-quality materials, these headphones are built to last.

But let’s not pretend they’re perfect. There are a few cons worth noting:

  • Weight: These aren’t your run-of-the-mill earbuds. They’ve got some heft to them, which might be off-putting for some users.
  • Pricey: High quality comes at a price, and the LCD-XC is no exception.

Price Point Evaluation

So, you’re probably asking yourself, “Are these headphones really worth their hefty price tag?” If you’re an audiophile who values top-notch sound quality above all else, then yes.

But if you’re looking for something to use during your daily commute or workouts, there might be more cost-effective options out there.

Value-for-Money Aspect

Regarding the value-for-money aspect of the Audeze LCD-XC review – it’s all about perspective.

If you see value in owning one of the best-sounding headphones on the market regardless of cost, they offer great value for money. But if budget is a concern and sound quality isn’t your top priority, perhaps not so much.

Comparison with Similar Products

Now let’s see how these bad boys stack up against similar products in the market:

Liric Over-Ear, Open-Back Headphones | Meze Audio
$2,000

The Meze Audio Liric over-ear, open-back headphones feature 40mm Beryllium drivers for detailed and spacious sound. Their lightweight build with steel and aluminum accents provides a durable yet comfortable listening experience.

Pros:
  • The Meze Audio Liric headphones are loved for their lively and clear sound that doesn't miss a beat.
  • Plus, they look as good as they sound, making them a top pick for anyone who loves their music and style.
Cons:
  • While the Meze Audio Liric headphones deliver a dynamic sound and a stunning design, they come with a hefty price tag and are considered quite large for portable headphones.
  • Some reviews also mention a slightly metallic treble and an intolerance for low-quality audio sources, which might affect the overall listening experience.

The Sennheiser HD 820 are closed-back headphones featuring 56mm ring radiator transducers in glass housings for detailed and precise sound reproduction. Their steel and aluminum design provides a durable yet comfortable listening experience.

Pros:
  • The HD820 headphones stand out for their impressive sound stage and deep bass.
  • They're also known for their natural-sounding voices and a darker tone that some listeners might prefer.
Cons:
  • The HD820 headphones, while high-end, have a mid-range tone that doesn't quite match their premium positioning. They're also on the pricey side, with a significant cost increase from the HD800S model, and some users might find the cable a bit heavy

The bottom line? If you want top-tier audio and don’t mind shelling out some extra cash (or doing a few neck exercises), then the Audeze LCD-XC could be music to your ears.

Understanding Who Shouldn’t Buy Audeze LCD-XC Headphones

Budget-Conscious Buyers, Beware!

Let’s face it; the Audeze LCD-XC headphones aren’t exactly a steal. These headphones will set you back a pretty penny. So if you’re counting your pennies or don’t feel like splashing out on headphones, these might not be for you.

  • High-end price tag: At $1,300, the Audeze LCD-XC series headphones are priced at the higher end of the market.
  • Replacement parts cost: Even replacing ear pads can make your wallet lighter.

Not Your Average Lightweight

If you’re in the market for something light and portable, look away now! These headphones are heavy hitters – literally.

Weighing in at over half a kilogram (600g to be exact), they’re not exactly featherweights. And while the weight is a testament to their quality build, it might not be ideal for those who prefer lightweight headphone options.

  • Heavy-duty: The headphone’s robust build contributes to its weight.
  • Portability issues: Its size and weight make it less suitable for travel or constant movement.

Noisy environments? Think twice

The Audeze LCD-XC headphones are open-back by design. This means that they allow some sound leakage which isn’t great if you’re planning to use them in noisy environments.

You’ll hear more than just your music – think traffic noises, chatty colleagues, or even your neighbor’s dog barking.

  • Open-back design: Allows ambient noise into your listening experience.
  • Sound leakage: Your music won’t stay confined to your ears; others may also hear what you’re listening to.

For Those Who March To Their Own Beat

These headphones have a unique sound signature that leans towards accuracy and detail retrieval rather than boosted bass or sparkling highs.

If you’re used to other types of sound signatures (like V-shaped or warm), this might take some getting used to.

  1. Neutral sound signature: Ideal for music producers but might not suit casual listeners’ preferences.
  2. Lack of boosted bass: Might disappoint bassheads looking for that extra thump in their music.

So there we go. While the Audeze LCD-XC headphones offer exceptional audio quality and comfort with plush ear cups designed to swaddle your ears in luxury, they may not tick all boxes for everyone out there.

Final verdict on the Audeze LCD-XC

Alright, we’ve been through the ringer with this Audeze LCD-XC review. So, here’s the lowdown. The ideal user for these headphones is someone who doesn’t mind shelling out some cash for top-tier sound quality.

The comfort and fit? Meh. You could wear these all day without your ears feeling like they’ve gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson. Your neck? That’s a different story.

But let’s get to the meat of it – the sound quality. It’s off the charts. Think concert hall acoustics in your living room.

Sure, they have their downsides (like that hefty price tag), but if you’re serious about your audio setup, these headphones are worth every penny. If you’re not an audiophile or don’t want to spend a small fortune on headphones, then maybe give them a pass.

So there you have it! Your move now – are you going to step up your audio game with the Audeze LCD-XC?

As you might know from my Twitter bit (that I will not let die) I am 6’5″. I like to say that I’m pretty tall but not so tall that everyone starts calling the Bigfoot hunters when I enter a room.

I’m tall enough that most things aren’t built for me. That’s why I was excited to review the Flexispot E7 Standing Desk — an absolute home office must, regardless of height.

Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk
5.0
$329.99

The Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk is a stylish, minimalist take on the tried and true standing desk concept. Rugged construction meets elegant materials with multiple options for tabletops and leg color.

Quick Verdict: After a few days with this product, I think I am finally a standing desk convert. At maximum height it is more than tall enough for a 6’5″ freelancer to work comfortably. The automatic settings are intuitive and super easy to program. The whole desk feels very well engineered — even though it took barely 30 minutes to set up. A premium item that is well worth the premium price tag.
Pros:
  • Easy to set assemble and set up
  • Bamboo tabletop is gorgeous, multiple options available
  • Rugged build with minimalist style
Cons:
  • The shipping boxes are extremely heavy
  • Bamboo picked up a couple scratches during assembly (use a mat or rug, I didn’t)

I’ve worked many jobs and, therefore, have worked in many different offices. I don’t remember much about those temp jobs from 2005-2010, but no one had standing desks back then.

The most “in shape” office dwellers at the beginning of this century were the ones who sat on those weird yoga balls. Don’t yell at me; I’m sorry; a ball is not a chair.

Then, between 2010 and 2015, when I entered the white-collar workforce in earnest, the standing desk became a popular concept — among the type of guys who would keep their Bluetooth headset in while conversing with you IRL.

I can’t define it with any modern equivalent, but the 2015 Standing Desk Bro was a very specific sort of dude—the just-asking-questions type of middle management demon. Maybe that was just my own personal bias.

Fast forward to 2019, when I got a job at Big Telephone and was presented with my first standing desk. Although technically, my office was meant to use a “hot desk” system, no one adhered to the rule, and I claimed a desk from a few other senior creatives.

I loved it. I feared the worst — was I becoming a Standing Desk Bro? I looked around the office and saw all sorts using and loving their standing desks — hypebeasts, hipsters, weirdos, normies. The stigma had dissolved; standing desks were here to stay.

Then, less than a year later, COVID hit, and I was cruelly pulled away from my lower-Manhattan standing desk. For the next three years, I worked from home; I worked from the couch; I worked from bed; I worked from the floor; let’s be honest: I even worked from the bathroom.

Then one day, it arrived: the answer to a prayer I had no idea I was still reciting. I was asked to review the Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk for KnowTechie.

Elevate your home office

The first thing you’ll notice about the Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk is that the boxes are very, very heavy.

Your FedEx driver likely hates you now, oops. Worth remembering that on hot days, it’s nice to sometimes leave a cooler of Gatorade and water out for delivery folks.

I had planned to make a time-lapse video of me setting up the Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk, but my MacBook is over three years old — which means a mischievous ghost haunts it.

As a result, you do not get to see me bent over and likely turning beet red while setting this beast up.

Assembly took less than 30 minutes, including unboxing

Everything about this product feels, as the title says, Premium.

The large, challenging components are mostly already assembled or fit together so smoothly that you should have a relatively easy time — even if you don’t have decades of experience assembling Ikea furniture.

For instance, the mechanisms that make the legs extend are already built into the leg assembly as shipped.

So you Allen-wrench a few screws in place, grab your power drill to attach the tabletop to the base assembly, connect a few wires, and that’s that.

I felt a tiny bit of pride the first time I raised the Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk to its full height.

Style and strength

Flexispot sent me the bamboo top, which carries a $130 premium according to their site, and it’s obvious why. This solid bamboo slab is gorgeous and, as I said earlier, feels Premium.

Although their site says that the bamboo top resists scratches, I did pick up a couple during assembly. That’s on me — I forgot to use a mat or rug.

Scratches on the top of a wooden stand up desk.
Image: Roger Feeley-Lussier / KnowTechie

The scratches will hardly be noticeable once I have all my belongings on the desk. I built this thing three days ago, and it already has so much stuff on it that I’ve forgotten where the scratches were.

Flexispot’s website really hammers home two essential details about the E7 Premium Standing Desk.

First, the desk has been “Raved by top YouTubers,” including Linus Tech Tips, Hacksmith Industries, and someone named Basically Homeless, who I just looked up and has 1.7m followers. Very cool.

The second big selling point of the Flexispot E7 Premium Desk is that it can hold up to 375 lbs. This is quite impressive — don’t get me wrong! But I must question how they’ve chosen to illustrate this feature.

The FlexiSpot E7 Standing Desk is a strong and versatile workstation that can hold up to 355lbs, making it suitable for two adults. Maybe working from home for the past few years has made me too sensitive, but doesn’t this feel like an HR violation? If you sent this image to your work’s Head of Ops, you’d be internally flagged for review.

I personally am not brave enough to get up on this desk and jump around, so I’ll take their word for it.

The Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk certainly can hold 375 lbs. I’ll probably never find out if we’re being entirely honest.

It’s electric

What makes the Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk stand out from the one I had back at Big Telephone is that you can save up to four different height settings that can be recalled with a single button push.

For my top or “standing” height, I went up to 49.2″, which makes a nice platform for my tall frame to work. I’ve been standing at my Flexispot E7 the entire time I’ve been writing this review, and I haven’t felt the need to sit or stretch even once.

The lower or “sitting” setting I chose fits snugly above the arms of my (due for a replacement) office chair. It’s great to know that if and when I get a new chair, I can reprogram the “sitting” button to be a little higher or lower as needed.

The image shows instructions for unlocking the Mild Child Lock on a FlexiSpot device, allowing all the buttons to work normally. Full Text: mid lock, you need (o "" ,, ","' non i ... To reprogram the settings on a Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk, all you have to do is bring the desk to the desired height, hit the “M” button, and then choose the 1, 2, “sitting,” or “standing” button.

This process was so intuitive that I double-checked the instructions because I had to miss something.

So how does it stand up to testing?

The desk holds a computer.

I’ve been using the Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk for about four days now, and I don’t see myself returning any time soon. I think my next purchase will be an anti-fatigue mat of some sort, even though my knees are responding well to today’s writing session.

The Flexispot E7 Premium Desk is, as its name states, Premium. The version with the bamboo top comes in at about $450 if you buy directly through their site, and I have to say — it’s worth every penny.

If you’re working from home for the foreseeable future or planning to revamp your small business office space, the Flexispot E7 is a great choice.

Still not convinced? Check out this short video I made showing how quickly the Flexispot E7 Standing Desk can extend to full height.

Specs

The Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk I received came in the C-Frame alignment. This chart from their website shows how the different frame types measure up.

Alternative options to consider

Final Verdict

After testing this standing desk for several days, I’m convinced of its benefits. Its maximum height provides ample room for tall users like myself to work comfortably.

The pre-set height adjustments are intuitive to the program. Despite quick and easy assembly, the desk feels sturdily constructed with quality engineering. While expensive, it’s a worthwhile investment for the premium design.

Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk retails at $329.99 and can be found via the company’s website or other retailers like Amazon or Office Depot.

The Flexispot E7 Premium Standing Desk is a stylish, minimalist take on the tried and true standing desk concept. Rugged construction meets elegant materials with multiple options for tabletops and leg color.

Quick Verdict
HP Sprocket Studio Plus WiFi Printer

$149.99

The HP Sprocket Studio Plus is a fantastic little photo printer, even if it's a bit pricey. Most photos look fantastic but it can struggle a bit if there are a lot of light images. The HP Sprocket app is well-designed and gives you quite a bit of functionality including making quick edits and building a simple collage.

Being able to print photos at home is a great way to bring the family together or quickly tackle your latest scrapbooking project. While there are many styles of printers that can print photos, they aren’t all created equally.

The HP Sprocket Studio Plus is a dedicated photo printer that brings lab-quality prints to the comfort of your home.

Having a dedicated photo printer means getting quality prints no longer necessitates the need to run to the nearest photo store or have them shipped to you.

Who is this good for?

HP Sprocket Studio Plus WiFi Photo Printer with the tray opened.

The HP Sprocket app is great for anyone that enjoys looking at physical photos but doesn’t want the hassle of having them shipped or driving to pick them up.

It would be particularly useful for printing 4 x 6-inch photos for frames and photo binders. This is also an excellent choice for people who enjoy scrapbooking.

Who it’s not good for

A home appliance sits indoors, providing convenience and comfort.

Anyone who wants professional-quality prints will want to look elsewhere. The HP Sprocket Studio Plus isn’t as accurate with colors, especially for photos with a lot of light colors.

The perforated edges don’t leave clean lines on two edges of the printer. If you are looking to save money, this printer isn’t the most cost-effective solution for printing your photos.

At $150, the HP Sprocket Studio Plus wants to show you how reliable, fun, and convenient photo printers have become.

Hardware and device setup

Setting up the HP Sprocket Studio Plus was an absolute breeze. At first, it can look intimidating as you pull all the pieces out of the box. And once you see how it all goes together, it’s a quick and painless process.

The printer is relatively small at 6.65 x 10.75 x 2.68 inches and weighs only 2.05 pounds.

Opening the door on the front of the printer reveals a power button, three indicator lights, and a large hole. The large hole is where you attach the removable paper tray and where your prints will ultimately come out from.

When you aren’t actively using the printer, the removable paper tray stores neatly on top of the printer. It’s a wonderful space-saving design, although it could have been designed to be more secure. It could be easily knocked off the top of the printer.

HP printer white on floor
Image: Steve Smith / KnowTechie

The right side of the printer has another door, which is where the dye-based ribbon cartridge goes. Installing the cartridge is easy, but be careful to insert it in the correct orientation as part of the ribbon is exposed.

Fair warning: Make sure you don’t have the printer too close to a wall or block the back in any way. A print will go in and out of the printer multiple times to apply different layers before it finishes printing.

Around the back is a fan grille, an opening for the power cord, and a thin slot. This thin slot is where the paper temporarily comes out from while it’s printing, only briefly sticking out the back.

HP Sprocket app

Loading the HP Sprocket app brings you to an account creation screen (which you can skip) and then guides you through the printer setup process.

This setup process is mainly just pairing the Hp Sprocket Studio Plus to your Android or iPhone with the built-in Bluetooth 5.0. It will then connect you to your Wi-Fi and drop you to the main screen of the app.

The HP Sprocket app is well laid out, intuitive to use, and gives you plenty of features to satisfy most users. The main app screen displays your gallery of photos, allowing you to quickly and easily select the photo that you want to print.

The main screen also gives you the chance to easily create a collage or make pre-cut stickers if you have the proper sticker paper.

HP printer app interface
Image: KnowTechie

You can also easily connect the app to Instagram, Facebook, and Google Photos to gain access to any photos you may want to print from your social media accounts.

Selecting a photo will give you a preview of what it will look like printed. If you would like to edit the photo, you can click the pencil icon to bring you to the editing screen.

This is where you can adjust things like brightness, contrast, apply filters, and crop your photos. You also get access to photo-enhancing features such as stickers, borders, and a text addition tool.

Using the Sprocket app was simple but not without its fault

Make sure you pay close attention to what your photo will look like, as you will most likely need to crop it to make it look right.

Toward the end of my testing, I noticed the app would occasionally force close. It didn’t do this at first, so I believe an update may have caused some instability.

Performance and media

A person is holding a sign that reads "K". Full Text: K
Image: Steve Smith / KnowTechie

The HP Sprocket Studio Plus performance was quite good, and it can print up to 300 dpi for both color and black ink. For the most part, the colors were accurate, and each print took about 1 minute and 30 seconds to go from start to finish.

The only time I saw colors struggle on the HP Sprocket Studio Plus was when the image had a lot of lighter colors in it. Most prints come out equal to what you would get from CVS or Walmart.

The 4×6 prints have a tab with perforated edges on the shorter sides of the paper.

This makes for easy handling after printing and can be easily torn off. It does leave the edges feeling a bit rough compared to normal paper, but it’s tough to tell just by looking at it.

HP Sprocket Studio Plus WiFi Photo Printer from the side with compartment opened.
Image: Steve Smith / KnowTechie

The printer came with 10 sheets of paper and a single printer cartridge. After 10 prints, the cartridge promptly ran out of ink.

This was a bit of a concern, considering a pack of 108 sheets of replacement paper and two cartridges costs $47 on Amazon.

You can’t buy the paper and cartridges separately, so it could feel like a leap of faith investing in more paper, not knowing how many prints you can get out of a single cartridge.

Luckily, HP sent along one of those packs to test out. It was a pleasant surprise to find that the cartridge in the replacement pack can print a significantly higher number of photos.

I have printed 50 photos since swapping the replacement cartridge, and it has yet to run out of ink.

If you are worried about the longevity of your prints, then you will be happy to hear that HP says the paper used in the Sprocket Studio Plus is smudge-proof, waterproof, and tear-resistant. I never encountered any smudges or tears during my testing.

What the Sprocket Pro is stacked up against Alternatives

If you are looking to print smaller photos, then the Liene Mini Photo Printer may suit your needs better than the HP Sprocket Studio Plus. This printer prints 2×3 inch photos with a removable back, allowing you to stick it on all kinds of things.

Even more, you can use it to convert standard images that you have taken and make retro-looking Polaroid photos.

For those of you on a budget, the Canon Selphy CP1500 is a similar printer to the HP Sprocket Studio Plus but can be found on sale for as little as $100.

They are both dye sublimation printers and can print 4×6 photos, but unlike the HP Sprocket printer, you don’t have to rely on an app for printing. You can print from your wireless network, memory cards, and flash drives.

Maybe a dedicated photo printer is too limiting for you, and you want something a bit more robust The Canon TR8620a can cover your photo, scanning, copying, faxing, and printing needs for less than $200.

The price is a bit higher, but this is a true multifunction printer and is much for versatile.

Final verdict

HP Sprocket Studio Plus WiFi Photo Printer
Image: Steve Smith / KnowTechie

The HP Sprocket Studio Plus successfully brings the convenience and thrill of printing physical pictures to the comfort of your home.

If you are the type of person who prefers having physical photos, loves scrapbooking, or wants to easily swap pictures in and out of frames, the $150 HP Sprocket Studio Plus will be a surefire hit.

The photos this little printer can make look quite good, with the minor exception of photos with a lot of light colors. It’s not that those photos are bad; they pale in comparison to the photos that you would normally get from the HP Sprocket.

At $0.44 per print, the HP Sprocket Studio Plus doesn’t end up being very expensive after the initial cost of the printer. Each photo takes about a minute and a half to print, and the paper tray can hold 20 pieces of photo paper.

If you like to batch a lot of pictures at once, you may want to get your pictures developed by someone else or be prepared to wait a while.

It would have been nice to have a printer capable of adjusting between 4×6 and 5×7 photos to tackle two of the most common sizes, but you are limited to 4×6 with this printer.

Overall the HP Sprocket Studio Plus is a fantastic little printer, especially if you fall into the use cases outlined above.

And keep in mind eliminating the need to send your photos somewhere else and then having to pick them up may result in printing more photos than you ever have.

Finding the best portable speaker can be a daunting task. There are so many options, and finding the best one for your specific needs can take a long time. Just ask us.

Our best JBL speaker recommendations are the result of hours of hands-on testing and research.

On top of that, we’ve put in a lot of hours. We’ve done interviews, read through user reviews, talked to customers, looked at Reddit posts, and watched YouTube videos. All this work has helped us put together a detailed list.

But mainly, our first-hand experience is ultimately how we made our picks.

  • Charging issues. I didn’t experience any of this, but some folks have found that their JBL Boombox 3 isn’t charging as it should, possibly due to issues with the charger itself, the cable, or even the power outlet.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity problems. While I didn’t experience any of these issues, a number of users have run into a snag when trying to pair their devices with the speaker over Bluetooth.

Key Points

  • Portability: The JBL Go 3 is a tiny speaker; you can take it anywhere. It’s great for traveling, the beach, and even the shower.

Balancing Budget and Features

Should you buy refurbished from JBL?

JBL speakers carry a premium price tag, and rightly so; their speakers kick some serious ass. However, if you’re looking to make a budget-savvy purchase, consider opting for a refurbished JBL model.

Rest assured, a refurbished JBL speaker delivers the same audio performance as its brand-new counterpart – but at a fraction of the cost.

Not to mention, these speakers are built like tanks. So given JBL’s renowned durability and longevity, even a previously owned model promises ample lifespan.

Just remember one crucial point: always verify that your chosen speaker has undergone thorough inspection and servicing by JBL professionals. This way, you’re not just buying smart; you’re buying with confidence.”

Refurbished JBL Speakers

  • Sustainability: Opting for a refurbished product reduces e-waste and supports sustainability efforts.
Check Availability

JBL speakers can be expensive, so you might be tempted to buy a refurbished model to save money. But is it really worth it?

You should buy a refurbished JBL speaker since it will still have the same excellent sound quality but at a lower price. The quality of JBL speakers makes them last longer, so a refurbished model should have plenty of life.

However, ensure the speaker has been properly inspected and serviced by JBL.

Airing it out

From left to right, the InvisiClean Aura II, the InvisiClean Mini Aura, and the Dreo Macro Max S
Image: Roger Feely-Lussier / KnowTechie

Over the past ten years or so, I’ve bought a couple of very simple air purifiers off Amazon, based entirely on price and reviews.

They work well, but both lack any sort of sensor or info screen — so I’ve been basing their efficacy entirely on vibes. With the Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier, I no longer have to wonder. It even has an app.

I’m not going to bury the lede here; I’m obsessed with this thing.

What’s in the box?

The box is surprisingly light. The purifier itself weighs in at just under 12 lbs, so it’s relatively to pick up and move around if you have to.

The device comes fully assembled with an H13 True HEPA Filter installed. Unlike some air purifiers, this is a cylindrical filter that apparently goes for about $50 on Amazon.

Dreo air purifier filter shown from the front and a closeup of the top.
Image: Roger Feely-Lussier / KnowTechie

A grounded plug with about 6′ of line grants limited mobility within a space, but I doubt many people will be dragging these around too much.

Also included are a “Quick Start Guide” and a manual.

Let’s talk about specs, baby

  • Power input: 120V ~ 60Hz
  • Noise level: 24-50 dB
  • CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate): 464m³/h / 273ft³/min
  • Effective range: 423ft² / 39 m²
  • Weight: 11.89lb / 5.35kg
  • Dimensions: 11.22 x 11.22x 20.86in / 285 x 285 x 530 mm

Does it work?

For a bit of background, we have cats. Three of them. Longhaired cats. Here’s one:

The light brown long hair cat sits on the floor.
Image: Roger Feeley-Lussier / KnowTechie

So I figured the best place to start testing would be the room where they hang out the most, the bedroom.

I turned the Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier on and was greeted by a quick countdown as the device turned on. The front LED cycled through its colors — fun!

An LCD display can cycle through a few modes, showing either “PM 2.5 μg/m3” or “Clean Air” expressed as a %, which correlates to the color of the LED, and “Filter Life” also expressed as a percentage.

Dreo Macro Max S air purifier LED display
Image: Roger Feeley-Lussier / KnowTechie

According to the Indoor Air Hygiene Institute, PM 2.5 is a measurement of particulate matter that has a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers. Most studies indicate that keeping the PM 2.5 level below 12 μg/m3 is typically considered healthy with no risk for exposure.

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it was; even at “turbo” speed, it wasn’t much louder than a box fan at its top setting.

There is also an “automatic” option, where the air purifier uses “ParticleIQ” tech to modulate the fan speed up and down. For the purpose of my testing, I mostly just ran it in “Turbo” mode for 2 or more hours at a time.

To the basement

A modern air conditioner, air purifier in basement
Image: Roger Feely-Lussier / KnowTechie

Cat den sufficiently cleaned, I turned to a more difficult testing ground — the basement. I set up the purifier and let it go to work. The sensors immediately detected 69% air quality, so I was excited to see how quickly it would get back up into the 90s.

It didn’t take long — I checked the device about an hour later, and it was already back to “Excellent” air quality levels. So far, the Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier had passed every test — it was time to go extreme.

The cat’s pee-yew

A modern home appliance stands in the middle of an indoor room, emitting a soft glow.
Image: Roger Feeley-Lussier / KnowTechie

Cats are great, but their litter boxes stink. I’d never really thought of air purifiers for straight-up odor-removal purposes, but I figured this was worth a try. I set up the tower by the cats’ bathroom and let that turbo button fly.

The effects were nearly immediate. Within 15 minutes, I noticed a drastic reduction in odor, and, like the basement, within a few hours, the sensor was picking up “Excellent” air quality, even though the box had been used multiple times since I started the test.

Like I said above, I’m obsessed with this thing.

What’s the app for?

I’m no Luddite, but I also don’t necessarily think I need an app to run my air purifier. In the interest of journalistic completionism, I figured I’d give it a go.

The “Dreo” app is very intuitive, and pairing it to the Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier only took about 10 seconds. You’ll have to enter your WiFi password, so have that handy if it’s not saved on your phone.

Alternatives to consider

06/23/2023 04:35 pm GMT

The app offers full control over your Dreo device, including fan speed, toggling modes, and access to the child lock, adaptive brightness, and other options.

This is pretty cool but not nearly as useful as the dashboard that gives you up-to-the-minute data on air quality in an easy-to-understand graph.

Although I’m sure I won’t be continuously checking this app, I can absolutely see its utility in institutional settings (like a doctor’s office).

So, what’s the verdict?

Unsurprisingly, and as I’ve mentioned multiple times in this review, I think the Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier is absolutely top-notch.

It is certainly the best air purifier I’ve ever used, and the additional features like the LCD display, LED lights, and app put it over the top.

It’s easy to use, relatively quiet, and honestly fairly handsome. You can even link it up with your smart home if that’s the kind of thing you’re into. If you’re in the market, I highly recommend the Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier.

Where can you buy the Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier?

You can buy the Dreo Macro Max S Air Purifier directly from Dreo or at fine retailers like Amazon for $219.99.
