The Samsung Galaxy S23 series launched in early 2023, and it features the best smartphone cameras of recent times.

However, we are already halfway through the year, which means Samsung is gearing up for the Galaxy S24 series, which is expected to launch sometime in the first quarter of 2024.

That said, multiple rumors about the Galaxy S24 series have already emerged. The latest leak indicates the Galaxy S24 Ultra is potentially in line for a massive camera upgrade.

The news comes from prominent leaker Ice Universe, according to whom the Galaxy S24 Ultra will feature a 50MP 3x telephoto camera. However, take this news with a grain of salt, as this is an early-stage leak and has the potential to be wrong.

Look at the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Samsung’s last flagship smartphone to understand why the telephoto camera will be a major step forward for the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The S23 Ultra only has a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. In contrast, its competition, like the Xiaomi 13 Pro, has a 50MP telephoto camera for a 3.2x optical zoom. You can also consider the OnePlus 11, which has a 32MP 2x optical zoom telephoto camera.

In other words, Samsung’s latest and greatest looks pale in comparison. While megapixels are not the only way to judge a sensor’s capability, Samsung has always been the champion of the megapixel race but only for the primary sensors. Sadly, secondary sensors historically haven’t received much attention.

While we love ultrawide cameras, we still believe a telephoto camera is more important because of the portrait mode capabilities. So, we are excited about the Galaxy S24 Ultra telephoto camera upgrade, and you should be too.
