Quick Answer: No, Instagram does not notify others if their story was received a screenshot. Actually, you can screenshot Instagram posts and Reels without worrying about the other user being notified. When you screenshot a disappearing photo or video in DMs, Instagram will notify them.

If you’ve ever taken a screenshot of an Instagram Story, you’ve undoubtedly felt a little paranoid about the other person finding out.

There could be a valid reason why you take screenshots of Instagram stories initially. Maybe someone posted a humorous meme or interesting photo as their Instagram content, and you wanted to share it with someone else.

Or maybe someone added a sentimental photo to their story, and you wanted to treasure these images as a memory.

On the other hand, you may be curious as to whether people are taking screenshots of your Instagram story, profile images, and messages.

Can people see if you screenshot their Instagram Story

Short answer: No

When taking screenshots or capturing a photo of someone’s Instagram stories, Instagram won’t send a notification to those people.

You can also screenshot Instagram posts and Reels without worrying about the other user being notified.

Instagram’s Screenshot Notifications: The Lowdown

Ever wondered what happens when you screenshot an Instagram story? Let’s dive right into it.

Are Notifications Sent or Not?

Truth is, Instagram doesn’t notify users when you screenshot their stories. That’s right, you can secretly screenshot away. But, it wasn’t always this way. Back in 2018, Instagram tested a feature where it would notify users of screenshots, but it was short-lived.

Why No Notifications?

Instagram decided not to implement screenshot notifications for stories. Why? Well, it’s not clear. But one theory is that it might discourage users from engaging with stories if they knew their screenshots were being monitored.

Comparison: Instagram vs. Snapchat

Here’s a quick comparison of Instagram and Snapchat regarding screenshot notifications:

PlatformScreenshot Notifications
InstagramNo
SnapchatYes

Snapchat, unlike Instagram, does notify users when their snaps are screenshot.

What About Direct Messages?

Does Instagram notify users when you screenshot disappearing photos or videos in direct messages

Here’s the twist. Instagram does notify users when you screenshot disappearing photos or videos in direct messages.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You receive a disappearing photo or video in your DMs.
  2. You screenshot it.
  3. The sender gets a notification saying you took a screenshot.

To Screenshot or Not to Screenshot

So, should you screenshot Instagram stories? Here’s the deal:

  • If it’s a public story, go ahead. The user won’t be notified.
  • If it’s a disappearing photo or video in DMs, think twice. The user will be notified.

So, does Instagram notify users when someone screenshots a story or anything else? Read on to find out

Does Instagram ever send notifications for screenshots?

Instagram has a feature that many users often wonder about: screenshot notifications. This feature is designed to maintain user privacy and control over their content, but it can also cause confusion and concern among users who are unsure of how it works.

Short answer: Yes, when you screenshot a disappearing photo or video in DMs

Although you’re safe to screenshot stories, posts, and Reels without Instagram notifying the user, the same can’t be said for disappearing photos and videos sent as direct messages.

If someone posts a photo or clip on their Instagram story that can only be viewed for a short time and you decide to take screenshots, they will see a star symbol next to the item in the message thread. Follow these steps with caution.

Additionally, when they go into their direct messages inbox, there’ll be text saying “screenshot taken” underneath your name.

READ MORE: Can you see who views your Instagram Stories?

However, you can screenshot someone’s direct message without them getting a notification. They’ll only know that you’ve read the message as it will say “seen.”

Instagram and Third-Party Screenshot Apps

When it comes to Instagram and third-party screenshot apps, there’s a lot to consider. Let’s jump right in and see what’s up with these apps and if Instagram sends notifications for screenshots.

Comparison: Instagram vs. Third-Party Screenshot Apps

Here’s a comparison table to show the main differences between Instagram’s own screenshot notification system and third-party screenshot apps:

FeaturesInstagramThird-Party Screenshot Apps
Notifications for ScreenshotsNoYes
PrivacyHighVaries
User-friendlinessHighVaries

Pretty clear, right? Instagram doesn’t send notifications for screenshots, but third-party apps can. However, the privacy and user-friendliness of these apps can vary.

Examples of Third-Party Screenshot Apps

Here are some examples of third-party screenshot apps:

These apps can send notifications when someone takes a screenshot of your content. But remember, their privacy and user-friendliness can be a mixed bag.

Steps to Use Third-Party Screenshot Apps

Follow these steps to use a third-party screenshot app:

  1. Download the app from the app store.
  2. Open the app and log in.
  3. Connect your Instagram account.
  4. Set up screenshot notifications.

Boom! You’re all set. Now, whenever someone takes a screenshot of your content, you’ll get a notification.

So, does Instagram send notifications for screenshots? Nope. But can you know if someone screenshots your stuff? Yep, with a third-party app. But remember, not all apps are created equal. Make sure you’re cool with their privacy policies before diving in.

Don’t be a creep when screenshotting on Instagram

There are plenty of reasons to screenshot an Instagram Story or Reel. There could be a movie recommendation you want to remember or a recipe you want to check out.

But don’t screenshot things that could be private or posted by mistake.

When it comes to capturing screenshots of DMs and stories on Instagram, we’ve covered every step you need to know about that content-related topic.

Again, the rules are the same. Don’t be a creep. It’s literally that simple.

Pay-to-play or a valuable security feature?

The post Meta Verified is officially live on Facebook and Instagram appeared first on KnowTechie.

Meta says its new verification subscription service, Meta Verified, is now live in the US, according to a recent announcement by CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

“This week we’re starting to roll out Meta Verified — a subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support,” wrote Zuckerberg in a Facebook post.

The news doesn’t come as a surprise –the subscription service first launched in Australia and New Zealand last month.

The service allows users to add the coveted blue check mark to their Instagram and Facebook accounts for a monthly fee, along with impersonation protection, and direct access to customer support.

How much does Meta Verified cost?

Meta Verified will cost $11.99 per month on the web and $14.99 on mobile, making it more expensive than Twitter’s similar service, Twitter Blue, which costs $8 per month.

Other than the verification badge and customer support access, what else does it get you?

According to Meta, US subscribers will get exclusive stickers on Facebook and Instagram Stories and Facebook Reels, along with 100 stars a month, to show support for their favorite creators.

How to sign up for Meta Verified

meta verified sign up instructions on a gradient background

To start, Meta suggests putting your name on the waitlist. Here’s what you’ll need to do when granted access to the service:

  1. Go to your account settings on Instagram or Facebook.
  2. Click on “Accounts Center.”
  3. Check if “Meta Verified available” appears under your name and profile picture. If it does, click on it.
  4. Select your preferred payment method for your monthly plan.
  5. Complete the verification process by providing a government-issued photo ID to confirm your identity.
  6. Once approved for Meta Verified, you’ll get exclusive features, including a verified badge, proactive impersonation protection, and direct access to customer support.

To sign up for Meta Verified, users must be at least 18 years old and two-factor authentication is also required.

Another important thing to point out is that Meta Verified subscribers won’t be able to change their profile name, photo, username, or date of birth unless they’re willing to complete the verification process again.

Should you sign up for Meta Verified?

meta verified promo

It’s no secret that Facebook has been under scrutiny for its handling of user data and privacy concerns in recent years.

With the launch of Meta Verified, some users may be left scratching their heads as to why they have to pay for a service that should be offered for free.

Meta Verified users are essentially paying Facebook for a job the company itself should perform.

Plus, the fact that users have to pay a monthly subscription for customer support may seem unfair to some, particularly if they encounter technical issues or have concerns about their accounts.

Some people like it, some people hate it

As you can see in the image below, Mark Nathanael Hardy, directed his feedback to Zuckerberg in his post.

Zuckerberg replied with a typical blanket statement claiming that it would be too expensive for the company to offer customer support to “millions or billions” users and that subscription fees would cover the costs.

mark zuckerberg responding to a comment criticizing meta's decision to profit for basic things like customer support access

Ultimately, the decision to pay for Meta Verified is up to the individual user. Whether or not users see the value in these services will likely depend on their individual needs and priorities.

But fair warning: If Meta is successful in getting users to sign up for Meta Verified, expect to see more services launch their copycat version of Meta Verified. The floodgates have officially opened.

The post Are your Instagram posts landing on Facebook? This is why appeared first on KnowTechie.

Ever posted something on Instagram just to find out that Meta also decided to cross-post your content to your Facebook profile?

As it turns out, that’s by design. Meta added the ability to cross-share posts and videos from Instagram to Facebook a while ago. Instagram will also allow you to share anything you post on your Facebook profile.

Whenever you make an Instagram post, including Stories or Reels, you’ll get a prompt to share on Facebook.

But if you don’t want to share on Facebook, you have to tap a link or toggle when finalizing the post. This can be easy to miss if you post a lot of content or aren’t paying attention.

Many users feel this is a sneaky tactic to try and boost young people’s Facebook usage. You can also cross-post from Facebook to Instagram, but that seems to be less of an issue.

Meta has been expressing concerns over young people’s Facebook usage in recent years.

Instagram has definitely become the more popular platform among young people, and Meta wants to bring Facebook back to its former glory.

share options
When sharing posts, the toggle is buried in the additional settings (Image: KnowTechie)

But this doesn’t seem to be the best way to bring users back. The New York Times spoke to a bunch of younger users about Instagram’s cross-platform sharing, and the majority were not in favor of the feature.

For most, it feels like this is a feature aiming to trick people into using Facebook more than they want to.

Cross-posting isn’t inherently bad, but Meta’s efforts to default users into posting on Facebook rubs people the wrong way.

Want to stop Instagram from sharing to Facebook by default? Here’s how

Now that you know why it’s happening, let’s put a stop to it. Here’s how to change your Facebook sharing settings on Instagram.

Tap the three-line menu in the top-right corner and head to Settings in Instagraminstagram settings button

Then, tap on Accountinstagram account menu

Scroll until you find Sharing to other apps – tap on itsharing menu

Select Facebook from the list of optionssharing to other apps menu

Here, select which types of posts you want to automatically share to Facebookinstagram share settings

There you have it. You’ve now somewhat thwarted Meta’s plan to get your Instagram posts on Facebook.

Although most social media companies tend to push their mobile apps, you can still post to many platforms via your computer. That’s why you need to know how to post on Instagram from a desktop.

However, some operating systems offer more options than others. For example, if you use Windows, you can download the app from the Microsoft Store.

If you prefer to use the mobile application, emulation may be an option on Mac and PC.

When accessing Instagram, you have multiple methods to choose from. Let’s discuss how to post to Insta on common desktop devices.

Using the Instagram mobile app on Windows or Mac requires additional software to emulate the Android OS.

When it comes to Android emulation, BlueStacks is a standout solution. The software is available for both Windows and macOS and even has a cloud-based option for playing games.

Other emulators do exist, but BlueStacks is simple, functional, and free to use.

Alternatively, you could try emulating Apple’s iOS on your desktop device. However, Android emulation is typically the easiest avenue.

Once your settings are in order, you’re free to launch the Play Store and install the Android Instagram app.

Instagram offers multiple ways to post

Social media companies want their platforms to be accessible, and although mobile apps get most of the attention, catering to different users makes sense.

The post How to turn on Instagram captions appeared first on KnowTechie.

Quick Answer: To turn on Instagram captions for all videos, you’ll need to head to the Captions menu under Account Settings. We’ll walk you through the process below.

Instagram added auto-generating captions to its videos in March 2022, but they are not turned on by default. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about how to turn captions on and off on Instagram.

Instagram’s captions feature already has support for several different languages. The platform also plans to continue adding support for more languages.

Captions for Instagram are available on both the Android and iOS versions of the app. Follow along below to learn how to take advantage of Instagram’s auto-generated captions.

Short on time? Jump ahead

How to turn on Instagram captions for all videos

You have a couple of different options for automated captions on Instagram. Your first option is to turn them on for all videos by default. Here’s what you want to do.

  1. Tap your profile icon in the bottom right

Doing this will ensure that Instagram’s automated captions will be turned on for all of the videos you watch going forward.

And if you get tired of them, you can always head back to this menu to turn the captions back off.

How to enable Instagram captions for one video

The other option that you have for enabling captions on Instagram is through each individual video you watch.

Say you don’t want captions on for every video on the platform, but you run into one where captions would help. Follow these steps to turn them on for an individual video.

  1. Tap the three-dot menu at the top right of a video

  1. Choose the Manage Captions option (as long as the video you are watching has captions enabled)

  1. Toggle the Captions option on

Image: KnowTechie

So that’s how you can enable captions on a single video while watching. This will only turn captions on for that video, so you’ll have to repeat the process if you need captions again on another video.

How to manage captions on your own Instagram videos

Creators can also manage captions for their videos. This is a huge convenience over the old system of transcribing a video and then adding captions as an overlay.

They will be turned on by default, but you can decide whether or not you want them on. Here’s what you want to do.

Tap Advanced Settings on the screen before you share the videoinstagram advanced settings videos

Under the Accessibility section, toggle Show Captions on or offinstagram show captions toggle

And that’s how you manage captions as soon as you share them to your feed. If you need to manage captions after you initially share the video, don’t worry.

You can go back in and toggle them on and off later through the video itself:

  1. Tap the three-dot menu at the top right of the video

  1. Select Edit

  1. On iOS, tap Advanced settings and use the toggle to turn captions on or off. Android users will see the option to Remove Captions in that menu

And that’s how you can manage the captions on videos that you share.

The new system is a huge improvement over the previous daunting task of transcribing a video and adding overlays to act as captions.

How accurate are the auto-generated captions?

instagram auto-caption feature
Image: KnowTechie

When it comes to AI-generated captions, the technology isn’t quite perfect. Instagram’s auto-generated captions are certainly passable, but you will probably notice a few errors here and there.

Overall, you’ll likely always get the general gist of what’s being said in the video. But there will be words that don’t fit and phrases that don’t make much sense.

Over the years, AI-generated captions have improved, but there are still some improvements to be made. And as AI continues to advance, expect auto-generated captions to continue to improve.

Use Instagram’s automated captions for a better video experience

So there’s everything you need to know about Instagram’s automated captions feature.

The platform finally leverages speech recognition to generate automated captions so that creators don’t have to create their own anymore.

And with support for several languages and more coming in the future, this is a great new accessibility feature that should help to expand the experience for just about every Instagram user out there.

When did Instagram come out? https://knowtechie.com/when-did-instagram-come-out/ Tue, 14 Feb 2023 17:49:00 +0000 https://knowtechie.com/?p=227757 Instagram has become a staple of social media, but how long has it been around?

The post When did Instagram come out? appeared first on KnowTechie.

Quick Answer: Instagram was first released in 2010 for iOS devices. It was purchased by Facebook in 2012.

For many people, Instagram is an integral part of their daily routines. What users love about the social media app is that it offers a virtual window into the lives of family, friends, and even celebrities.

Instagram is also a great way to kill time by scrolling endlessly through photos of cute pets, tasty food, the latest fashion trends and many other categories.

And since the launch of Instagram Reels in 2020, the platform is home to lots of entertaining video clips. In addition to viewing photos and videos on Instagram, you likely upload photos now and again.

So, when did Instagram launch?

Short answer: 2010

The platform has been a staple in the social space, but when did Instagram come out?

Instagram has been around for 13 years, launched in 2010 by programmer Kevin Systrom and software engineer Mike Krieger.

Surprisingly, Kevin and Mike didn’t set out to create Instagram as an all-purpose image-sharing app.

In the early stages of the company’s development, the platform wasn’t even called “Instagram.” It was a location check-in app called Burbn.

Facing tough competition from Foursquare and learning that many of Burbn’s users like to share photos on the platform, Kevin and Mike decided to pivot by creating an image-sharing app instead.

They called their new app “Instagram” by combining “instant camera” and “telegram.”

When did Facebook buy Instagram?

Short answer: 2012

After Instagram launched, it quickly became a hit among users and was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion in 2012. When the acquisition took place, Instagram had a team of 13 employees.

But with revenues in the tens of billions of dollars, Instagram is now one of Facebook’s most profitable brands. And the acquisition proved fruitful for both parties.

Since buying Instagram, Facebook has introduced a plethora of new features to the platform – including Instagram stories and Instagram Reels.

For this reason, it remains popular in the face of stiff competition from newer rivals like TikTok.

Another thing worth mentioning is that Instagram, along with Facebook, falls under one parent company called Meta.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta last fall, and with a renewed focus on emerging technologies like the Metaverse, there’s no doubt Instagram will continue to evolve in the coming years.

The Meta-owned platform continues to draw in millions of people every single day around the world. The social giant is also quick to add new features constantly.

And now you know a little bit about its history, including the answer to the question, “When did Instagram come out?” Are you surprised that the platform is over a decade old, or did you think it was even older?

As an Instagram user, you no doubt spend a significant amount of your day scrolling through images posted by your loved ones and favorite stars.

So, who owns Instagram now?

Short answer: Facebook (now known as Meta).

Firstly, let’s start from the beginning of Instagram’s 12-year-long history.

Kevin Systrom, a computer programmer, and Mike Krieger, a software engineer, are the founders of Instagram.

They created a location check-in app called Burbn. But it wasn’t much different from Foursquare.

Seeing this as an obstacle, the duo eventually turned Burbn into a photo-sharing platform called Instagram.

As Instagram launched with new features and attracted millions of users worldwide, the platform quickly caught the attention of the social media behemoth Facebook.

And after acquiring the social media app in April 2012 for a cool $1 billion, Facebook became Instagram’s owner.

Since then, Facebook has expanded Instagram with new functionalities like stories to take on rival platforms like Snapchat.

Considering that Facebook is the largest social networking platform in the world and Instagram is the fourth most popular social media site, its acquisition definitely paid off.

What’s Meta?

Short answer: The parent company of Facebook and Instagram

So, who owns Instagram now that they’re called Meta? Technically, Facebook is no longer the owner of Instagram.

Just like Google created a parent company in the form of Alphabet, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced in October 2021 that the specially created “Meta” would become the owner of Facebook and Instagram, amongst its other brands.

Facebook and apps, such as Instagram and WhatsApp, are now a subsidiary of Meta’s parent company.

In a press release, Meta is described as a single brand that combines a multitude of apps and technologies.

Instagram’s parent company, Meta, wants to “bring the metaverse to life and help people connect, find communities and grow businesses.”

So, expect to see massive changes on Instagram as emerging technologies like the metaverse impact our lives in the years to come.

Quick Answer: Instagram Reels can be up to 90 seconds long. Instagram increased the length of its video clips from 15 seconds to 90 seconds shortly after it introduced Reels in 2020.

Instagram announced Reels, its answer to short-form video-sharing platform TikTok, in August 2020.

The social media giant describes Reels as “a new way to create and discover short, entertaining videos on Instagram.”

With Instagram Reels, you can record short videos and edit them using special effects, tracks, and tools.

Once you’ve created an Instagram Reel, you can post them on your feed for your family and friends to watch. Additionally, you can download Instagram Reels to watch offline.

Or, if you aim to go viral, you can allow anyone to view your Reels by making your Instagram account public.

As well as being able to record, edit and share your short-form videos, you can watch other people’s clips on a dedicated Reels page.

And if there’s a specific video you’d like to watch, you can search for it via the Explore function.

Either way, the feature is great for both video creators and consumers. But when creating these short-form videos, one question that may be on your mind is how long they can be. Read on to find out.

How long can Instagram Reels be?

Short answer: Up to 90 seconds

When Instagram announced Reels in 2020, it imposed a 15-second time limit. Since then, Instagram has made it possible to create clips of up to 90 seconds.

That’s good news if you think 15 seconds is too restrictive for an Instagram Reel and want more creative freedom with your videos.

How do you create an Instagram Reel?

Short answer: Click the plus icon – then press “Reel”

Creating an Instagram Reel is straightforward. All you need to do is open the Meta-owned app on your smartphone. Then, press the plus icon in the top right-hand corner of the app.

This will bring you to a page called “New post.”

At the bottom, there’s a bar with options for “Post,” “Story,” “Reel,” and “Live.” You’ll want to press the “Reel” option. To create a Reel, simply hit the record button.

Another way to create one of these short-form videos is by clicking the play button in the center of the main menu bar. This will load a page containing Instagram Reels.

To create your own short-form video from this screen, press the camera icon in the top right-hand corner. From there, you’ll see the screen that allows you to record your new masterpiece.

How do you change the length of Instagram Reels?

Short answer: Click the “length” button

Now that you know how to record Instagram Reels, you’re probably wondering how to change their length. When you go to record a new video, you’ll see a list of tools on the left side of the page.

The third tool down, which has a symbol with a number inside a circle and is labeled “length,” allows you to change the duration of your video. There are options for 15, 30, 60, and 90 seconds – just pick one.

Once you’ve chosen a length, the number inside the circle will change to reflect your decision. You can then create an Instagram Reel that will be that length.

Instagram Reels is great for creating short-form videos

Reels bring lots of fun to the social platform. Whether you want to create a short clip of your dog barking at the delivery driver or a clip of you dancing to a viral trend, you can create all sorts of Instagram Reels.

Of course, they’re also a great source of entertainment. So, don’t be surprised if you spend countless hours of your day watching Instagram Reels.
